:alarm: IMPORTANT - The tutorial is based on the creation of a dining table,
but CAN be used to create different objects; however, you should use this tutorial
only to create non-animated objects, with single-state textures
(NO clean/dirty or lit/unlit objects).

-----------------------------------------------------------

:new: 07 NOV 2008 - Added German (Deutsch) translation for the Milkshape tutorial (V. 2.1) by "magicdawn"

Object Creation tutorial V.2.1 (Milkshape) (German) -> Split in 2 parts

All the tutorials are provided in PDF format.

------------------------------------------------------------

(Original JWood's post follows)

In these new tutorial's you will learn to create a new "Dining Room Table" that is color enabled and E.P. ready. You will also learn how to work with SimPe's new "GUI" in the object creation aspect. You will also learn basic UV mapping and texturing.

We wrote these tutorials to try and help the ambitious new "object maker" get a hands on "how too" on creating a Sims 2 color-enabled E.P. ready object's. With the added "Wings 3D" and "Blender 3D" versions you have a greater array of choices as to which 3D editor better suits you.

The tutorials teach the process we use, we do not claim it to be "the only way". It is based on the success we have had using this procedure. You will learn every aspect of creation from picking a good object to "clone" to saving your final package and viewing it in the game as a complete object.

We will answer any questions you have here but please do not ask questions if you have not read the entire tutorial. They are mainley image based asside from the introduction's which we think is as important as the actual directions.

 If you are already capable of making a mesh, Numenor and I have co-written another tutorial for creating quick color enabled objects.

You can find it here:
http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=52499

:read: Again I will stress do not miss a step, most error's we find are due to missing a step. The process must be followed "Exactly". Sometimes we want to add a little of our own creativity to even the newest of things. This is exactly how I make and have made on timeless accounts... :)

:alarm: We will not be checking faulty packages in this thread unless they are strictly related with this tutorial. In our efforts to organize things a bit, a new forum called "Object Creation Workshop and Repair Center (http://www.modthesims2.com/forumdisplay.php?f=482)" has been created for trouble packages. Any uploads or posts not to do with the tutorial this thread covers will be deleted. This is to help "us" help you... :)

NOTE To all users: Please take the time to look through the threads pages for answers to your questions before posting... A great many questions I am answering over and over that are right here in the thread... I am always happy to help but please help me out and read the posts before hand.. Thank you...

kenny, in your screenshot I can tell that the invisibility problem is caused by an incorrect mesh name in the Models list in Geometric Data Container. You have named the mesh "pcbord". You should change it to "desk", like the original mesh name was. To do that, click on the Groups tab, then click on "pcbord", edit the name in the box on the right, then click Commit and save the object. This will most likely fix the invisibility problem, even though the catalog image won't be updated automatically. To get a fixed thumbnail, delete the packages in the Thumbnails folder in The Sims 2 folder in My Documents (leave the folder, delete the files inside of it). A new thumbnail will be created the next time you look at the object in the game catalog.

I have tried to download "TS2 Object Creation Tutorial V2.1 (Milkshape) - UPD 22feb06 - PART_1of2.rar " when I try to extract it. I get a message "the file is corrupt"...and another message "unexpected end of archive" what does this mean??

Did you wait until it was fully downloaded before opening the file? If so, take a look at this (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=133169) post, some other people have been problems downloading, as well.

Yes I waited until it was fully downloaded..I tried it 3 times downloading the rar file. Then I tried it with Q-Xpress install (twice)..there it stopped about 1/3 of the way through , and said there was an error (CRC error). I went to the "problems with downloading" page and everything worked there for me. Now what? :)

MissWendy - Some older RAR archiver (I can't say for the Q-Xpress) don't manage correctly RAR with long names, or placed in deeply nested folders.

After having downloaded it, *before* unpacking it, rename the rar, making the filename shorter; and possibly move it in a "simple" location, like "C:\". Then, try unpacking it again.

Numenor I am experimenting a problem at the beginning of the tutorial. When I open the object workshop and press start after it searches the files it only shows me a "others" category and there is no "surfaces" nor "tables" under it. Here are 2 screenshots:

I have a question..."In the BMP Export Options" for the table I entered 256x512 for the size of the texture map...Is that the same size for every object? If I wanted to make a statue or a couch, do I still enter 256x512? If not, how do I know what size?

IgnorantBliss
28th Feb 2006, 4:56 PM
No, you can use different sizes (128 x 128, 512 x 1024, and so on). If you use the DDS Utilities for importing your texture (see Numenor's object recoloring tutorial for that that) you can use a texture of a different size than that of the original object. As a general rule, small objects use small textures, big objects big textures. Whatever you need for that particular object to have good texture quality, keeping in mind that large textures use both more bandwidth (while downloading) and game resources.

If that's an Open For Business item, I can't say. Neither I nor Numenor have the new expansion pack yet, so at this point it's hard to say what might be the reason :(.

MissWendy

no it is not an OFB item...I just wanted to make one to put a microwave on... I tried to clone the talking table to make it.

Hi ..It's me again! :) I made a sculpture and it did turn out in the game, BUT now it also replaced the original sculpture. So basically I have 2 of my sculptures and no maxis one (the running man wooden sculpture) How do I get back the original item and only keep one of mine???

IgnorantBliss
2nd Mar 2006, 9:11 AM
By "not showing up in the game" do you mean there is no trace of your object in the catalog at all, or it's in the catalog, but invisible?

Objects that replace the original are usually missing a new GUID. Did you get a new GUID, and also update the MMATs, and commit?

MissWendy
2nd Mar 2006, 5:51 PM
I believe I did get the guid...The sculpture (original maxis one) shows up as the new sculpture I made with the recolors and description of the original object. How do I get the maxis object back? Maybe a better way to describe it: the maxis object is a "running" man...my sculpture is a turtle. In the game the man is now a turtle, with the description of a man. (I don't know if that was better or not) :)

One more question....When I open my Table2Map in Paintshop pro9 and I paste a texture over it, the colors of the texture are all grey. (any texture)...I even tried it in windows paint and the same thing happened, so I know it is not because of the paint program...Is there something wrong with my table2map?

Lethe_s
2nd Mar 2006, 10:14 PM
MissWendy,
bitmaps that come straight out of UVMapper are in 4bit colour, I think, or maybe even black/white
you should have an option somewhere to set it to 24 bit before you paste the texture
In Paint Shop Pro 8 it's in Image in the menu bar, choose Increase colour depth and set it to 24 bit
PSP 9 shouldn't be too different :)

IgnorantBliss
2nd Mar 2006, 10:20 PM
MissWendy, still double-checking about the object replacement problem: When you got the GUID, did you also update MMATs? Click open the MMATs (Material Definitions) in the package and see if the "guid" line's value matches the new GUID. If not, you can manually copy and paste the number there and commit.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f171/thumper202/turtleproblem.jpg Yes I did..Did I explain everything right?? The turtle sculpture I made is in the game...Twice. One is the mesh I made and the other replaced the running man sculpture. S now I have 2 turtles. Why did it give me 2 turtles and no running man?? When I open SimPe the running man is still there.....(in case you can't see photo) http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f171/thumper202/turtleproblem.jpg

IgnorantBliss
3rd Mar 2006, 6:46 PM
MissWendy, there was something weird going on with the texture image. The largest texture size seemed messed up. I exported the next largest one and resized it to 512x512, then imported back. It seems to have fixed the problem. But from the problems you've had with these two recent objects, it seems there is some problem with your texture import. Which method are you using, normal import or Build DXT?

I don't know if the texture caused the object to replace the original, and if, how, but after I'd fixed the texture and checked the object in the game, it seemed fine to me, did not replace the original sculpture.

On another note 512 x 512 pixels is a bit of an overkill for a small object like the turtle. I'd go for no bigger than 256 x 256 personally for an object of that size. It's also fairly high in polygons and vertices for a one-tile object.

MissWendy
3rd Mar 2006, 7:28 PM
Thank you so much for looking at it...I did the normal import ( I don't even know what Build DXT is) and I was never quite sure what size of texture to use. I still have the "other" turtle zip (the one that replaced the running man) what do I do with that? If I just delete it, will the running man come back?

IgnorantBliss
3rd Mar 2006, 7:41 PM
Yes, you can delete it. I'm not sure if the thumbnail image for the Maxis sculpture will be fixed automatically or not (it may still look like a turtle in the catalog even if the actual object looks like the original sculpture when placed on a lot). If the thumbnail doesn't get fixed, delete the package files in your Thumbnails folder in the Sims 2 folder under My Documents. The next time you go into the catalog, the correct thumbnail will be generated.

I have a question...When cloning an object (like a bed) there are 2 "geometric data containers" How do I know which one to highlight and then continue on with the "steps" in the tutorial?

Take a look at both of those GMDCs and see what's inside. Likely only one of them will contain the bedding and frame meshes, while the other might be all shadows. Mirrors usually have more than one GMDC also, the glass usually being a separate GMDC from the frame, and so on. You may have to edit more than one GMDC sometimes.

i have a problem when i did your tutorial i followed all the steps and my table still does not match that mesh

Your table doesn't need to match the mesh in the tutorial exactly. The point is that you get some kind of a new mesh that you're satisfied with. The purpose is to learn to make an object, not to make an exact copy of the tutorial table :). Unless you mean that there is something seriously wrong with your mesh. In that case, you will need to give more details about what exactly is wrong with it, and maybe post a screenshot of the table as an attachment :).

IgnorantBliss
12th Mar 2006, 8:03 AM
Which mesh editor did you use? It's hard to say where exactly the problem is, but it does sound like you may have missed a step. Did you make sure that when you exported the mesh you made from the mesh editor, that you saved it over the original file, and that it was the same one you imported into SimPE? And in SimPE, did you really replace the original with yours? I'd recommend you go over every step once more and make sure you don't miss anything. Remember to Commit after you import the mesh into SimPE also.

Sometimes it helps being a complete anarchist :D

When Exporting choose the square under Wavefront (.obj) and choose the Tesselation here (as see on the screenshot above)

This is coming in handy. (this is maybe handy for other people looking for 3DS Max Tutorials!

Ok I will first say Thank you soo much for this tutorial It was great! Now for my prob, ok I can make meshes and such and get them in the sims, but I do not understand the process of Texturing my objects. I am a do it learner and like to be walked though things like the tut on this thread. I have looked and can not find a tut on how to make a texture for a mesh. Or at least figure out how to link them in SimPE. Sorry if I missed a thread on this, like I said I am new at this

Thanks again

Thanks for this. I've got a question. Forgive me if this is discussed somewhere or at a later point in the tutorial; I'm just doing this as I go through the tutorial for the first time. I'm up to the cloning of the object (page six on the Wings 3D version) and there seems to be an option not mentioned in the tutorial. It's underneath the checkbox for "Pull Animations"; it's "Pull #STR-Linked Resources". It's checked; does it need to be?

IgnorantBliss
26th Mar 2006, 5:24 AM
Krazymage, the tutorial does tell you how to import the texture into SimPE :).

maybesomethingdunno, that cloning option was just introduced in the latest SimPE, so when then tutorial was made with the previous one, that option is not mentioned. However, since it's selected by default, I recommend you leave it selected :).

Sheyla,
you'll need to download both parts of that tutorial ('1 of 2' and '2 of 2'). They're linked, so put them both on your desktop, then use winrar on the first one and it'll open both of the rarfiles.

IgnorantBliss

Sheyla and Puglord, what is the size of the rar file for the tutorial after downloading? It may be that they weren't fully downloaded (they are large files and may take a while to download) and will give an error message when opening. Try downloading once again, and even if they download fully and still give an error message, I can try emailing the tutorials to you.

Lethe_s
26th Mar 2006, 1:54 PM
sheyla,
they are in rar.format, so you will need winrar to open them
once the archives are open, you'll need adobe acrobat or foxisoft reader to actually read them

A good place to get some textures is The Inspiration Gallery (http://www.theinspirationgallery.com/)

They have a wonderful selection of textures that are seamless and they are free. You only need to give credit to them for the textures that you use. Something like

This contains textures provided by The Inspiration Gallery.

placed in your description would work with the url listed too, of course.

Hi guys. Its me again.
I tried making my own custom column now, but im already having some problems with it.
When im in SimPE, i select the Romanische Betonsäule (i dont know what its called in english, sorry) and cloned it.
when i saved it i DID rename it to SheylasColumn1.
so far so good.
Next i clicked on the GeometricDataContainer, but in the window to the right, all there was, was something called GeometricDataContainer and then the name of the ORIGINAL maxis column...???
From the tutorial i learned that there should be the cloned object listed with the NEW name i saved it with...

How come my saved objects not showing up?
Im pretty sure i followed the steps before exactly like i was told, so i dont know whats wrong!

Hope someone can help me

IgnorantBliss

The name on the Models list in Geometric Data Container is supposed to be the same as the original Maxis name, or your mesh is going to turn up invisible in the game. So, nothing to worry with that :).

IgnorantBliss
30th Mar 2006, 2:42 PM
labine730, you probably had the "reference original mesh" cloning option checked in the beginning, did you? Because otherwise I wouldn't know why the GMDC wouldn't be included. Try cloning the table again and pay close attention to having the cloning options checked and unchecked just like in the tutorial.

morten8035, this subject is way beyond a beginner object creation tutorial! If you're talking about sims' animations while using an object, look at the Animation sub forum that has discussions on animation files. However, I don't think there are any tutorials on that. If you're talking about the object's animations, then it's a different subject again. There are tutorials for retaining existing animations from the cloned object, but adding completely new ones again is quite a bit more complicated.

Ok, this tutorial has been very helpful, so thank you so much for the time and effort put into it!!

Anyway.. this is my first attempt to do anything beyond recoloring. Perhaps I should just follow the tutorial, but I don't want to make a table, I want to make a simple milk bottle, using the Fleur something or other bud vase. I would think that would be easier than the table, because it's just one thing and doesn't require groups and stuff (except to delete the flower group).

So, the uv mapping part is weird for me (when I went to import it it was too big, but that's a whole different post I think). But, the more important problem I have is that when it comes to the part to register a GUID, in the tools section I only have one object data file... so, I'm sure I messed up somewhere. The end result was almost everything I wanted it to be in the game... had the right description and price, but just looked like a recolored bud vase.

If you have any ideas where I went wrong please let me know. I'm going to do the tutorial for the table now, but I'm not sure that will tell me what I did. Is there maybe a tutorial somewhere for a simpler object, like a sculpture or something?

thanks so much, again, for your time, effort, and patience!!!

P.S. I'm a very bad poster/creator and don't have any screenshots. Also, FYI, I used milkshape, uvmapper, and photoshop 7.0

P.S.S. I have now tried to do the table, and when I get the the part on milkshape for regrouping the legs (after deleting the original table, before renaming the group), I get a typical error message "ms3d.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". I tried, and tried, and tried again getting the same message. After requesting on a few sites for someone to make me a milk bottle, now trying to do it myself... I'm convinced God doesn't want me to have a milk bottle.....LOL!!! Please help while I still have hair.

For the uv-mapping, see this (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=79954) article by Numenor.

As for the GUID, most one-tile objects only have one GUID, so it sounds completely normal to me :). When giving this object a new GUID, treat the one GUID as you did the main GUID with the dining table in the tutorial, and discard the information on the other GUIDs (meaning, you will have to update the MMATs with this one and only GUID).

IgnorantBliss, I have a pic, except now the talking table has become "custom" with the * in the corner. I've replaced my Objects file in TSData/Res/Obects, and it is still like that.

(Pictured is the Talking Table, but that is what my table looked like.

Any help on fixing the table and getting my my Talking Table? I followed all the steps to the t and the talking table went poof. Yes, I even made new GUIDs. And saved. And commited.

IgnorantBliss
31st Mar 2006, 10:07 PM
Looks like you've got some inverted faces. Which mesh editor are you using?

Replacing the Talking Table probably means something went wrong with the GUIDs. Did you get new GUIDs for all the three GUIDs? And did you update MMATs with the main one? Open the MMAT (Material Definition) and see what the objectGUID line points to. If it's not the new main GUID you gave the object, click on that line in the MMAT and edit the value to be the same as the new main GUID, then Commit and Save.

The wonderful people who answer all of these questions have so much more patience than I think I would. Thank you so much!

Here is where I'm stuck right now. First, know this. In Milkshape I cannot regroup then rename or it crashes. I'm not sure if this is a big problem, because I don't think the name is important, but maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway, I've attached a picture of the Mesh Group Importer. I click the file, and then click "replace". The tutorial says that in the drop down menu underneath that I should find something of my own... but I don't. Why is this? Any clues?

Thanks again!

For the people with Blender and Wings 3D related problems, I will let someone else answer the meshing problems, since I'm not familiar enough with those programs :).

labine, I'm sorry if I asked you already at some point, but which mesh program are you using again? Milkshape or something else?

amymil, what is the name of the group(s) when you export them from Milkshape? If you renamaed it to what I see on the screen, then everything looks fine to me. But you say you can't rename it to what it should be? Milkshape has a tendency to crash sometimes upon regrouping. I would try again and again, and maybe do something else first and then try regrouping again. It seems to be some kind of a Milkshape bug. If you keep having problems, upload both the object package and the mesh file as an attachment here and I'll take a look, I use Milkshape, as well.

TheSims2freak,
yup, that looks like it's inside out
this happens if you scale it too far (try staying zoomed in and keeping you 'scale line' long enough for more control)
it's probably easiest to just remesh the tabletop, since it's a reasonably simple shape
or you can just flip the faces:
quoted from Darylmarkloc:

Have 'Show Normals' on..select the faces with the blue lines facing INWARDS and then select 'Normals >> Flip'

And, on a side note:

I'm not too knowledgeable with Wings 3D--I tried, and didn't like it. But from the error message, it sounds like that the mesh may be too big.

IgnorantBliss

No, the new version of the tutorial does not use 0.36. I think the SimPE version was 0.54 at the time the tutorial was updated. I recommend you use the very latest version, though, regardless of what's mentioned in the tutorial. There is one new cloning option since 0.54, which you can just leave checked as it is. I don't think the newest version is in other ways different from that one when it comes to following the tutorial.

This is the first time I use new SimPE. I always use the 0.15 version + meshtool :) It's amazing how simple making new objects could be with the new SimPE! Though i have a question here:

When I click get GUID, what I got is an error message: (It's before I ever have chance to enter my username and password. Is this something to do with SimPE website, or it's I did something wrong in steps before?

Ok I'm sorry i keep posting irrelevant questions but is there anyway I could view the tutorial in a different Program like in the program Notepad or Word or anything?
It cuts some of the words of the end in the blender version with Acrobat

hxcAMBERhxc, you can make up temporary GUIDs until you get a chance to register your own block of GUIDs. Just remember to give your object "real" GUIDs before you release the object to the public to prevent conflicts.

Fill in the GUID manually instead of clicking the "get GUID" link, then click Update MMATs and Commit as normal. When you change the GUID to another later, you may have to manually fix the GUID in the MMAT, the Update MMATs doesn'y seem to work properly after it's been a while since the package was created. You can open the MMAT(s) and check if the objectGUID value is right or not. If not, you can manually fill in the right one and commit. Notice that you will have to fix any recolor packages you may have created for your custom object, too, so that they will also point to the new GUID.

Hello,

I have tried several times today to download the Milkshape tutorial for creating objects 1, and the download keeps canceling out after it has downloaded half way.

I have already downloaded tutorial number 2 with no problems, but I still need number 1.

Once the download is broken I have to start all over again, because I can't use my download accelerator plus program on this site for downloading.

Could you please help!

Thank you Lethe_s! Not only have I solved my table mesh, I got back to talking table! I just deleted it like it was custom, and I loaded up the game to find it had regenerated with normal mesh and all!

 Now I have a tiny, little problem. I think the legs are inverted. Check out the attached screen and give me some advice to keep it from going inside out, if you want.

6th Apr 2006, 4:26 PM
Sims2freak
yup, they're inverted
I explained in post 134 how to fix that

it happens when you scale too far in blender, it'll turn the shape 'inside out'
what I do to avoid it, is stay zoomed in far enough, so you see how the scaling progresses
also, keep the scale line (the dotted line thingy) long enough,
this means you'll need to keep the pointer further away from your mesh
a longer scale line gives you much more control over how far you're scaling

When you clone the object, make sure to uncheck the option to "reference original mesh". If you check that, the mesh won't be included.

I also apologize if this should be put some other place. I'm at page 27 of 47 of the second part of the Wings 3D start to finish tutorial in which you must set the price in the RAW Data tab. I'd like to set other specific qualities to my object as well. 1) There's "price", "sale price", "initial depreciation", "daily depreciation", "self depreciation", and "depreciation limit". I know I am to edit "price" but what about "sale price"? Also, I'd like this object to appreciate over time (just like paintings that a Sim makes which I've read increase in value if the Sim dies). Would I set one of the depreciation attributes to a negative number? I've cloned a decrative object so that I could have the animations related to "viewing"; this brings me to my next set of questions. 2) I'd like for the Sim to use the "view" interaction when using the object (I'll want to change the text in the pie menu later) specifically that "hmmmm" gesture in which the Sim puts their hand on their chin for as long as or as often as possible (I intend on this being a skill-gaining object with a high environment score). What, if anything, should I set for the "Look At Score", "ratingFun", "ratingRoom", and "ratingSkillFlags" attributes?
Thanks in advance and sorry for being a handful :P
At this point, I'm considering giving somebody everything I've done so far and ask them to finish it for me. :jest:

Added: One of my problems is that I don't know how to "continue" a project. I will follow the tutorial until I get stuck or have a question....then by the time I've gotten the answer and/or worked out the problem, either SimPE has produced an error message telling me that it will either ignore the unhandled exception or will terminate (in fear of what has happend, I tell it to terminate) or I'm force to log off of the computer that I'm on. Thus, I'm forced to start over, since I don't know how to continue from where I left off. This time I just had to log off of my computer. If someone would be so kind as to tell me how to pick up where I left off (in addition to answering my questions), I'd appreciate it. I believe I've already done the new GUID part and it says in SimPE that the "object was created and loaded". Thanks.

Numenor
9th Apr 2006, 9:37 AM
Nickbadal, Katie and anyone interested:
SimPE uses a special version of the DirectX, called "Managed DirectX 9.0c"; it can be found at the main SimPE download page (http://sims.ambertation.de/en/download/realdownload), as suggested by IgnorantBliss.

Maybesomethingdunno - SimPe is still in alpha stage, and therefore it may be unstable. When you get the error message, with the option to Ignore and Terminate, always choose Ignore, save the package and restart SimPE; this way, at least, you won't lose the work you have done since last saving.

The other questions are off-topic here (this thread is reserved for questions about the tutorial). But anyway, here is a brief explanation: I'm giving you some hints, but - as usual - I can't explain everything; I expect you to examine your object, examine similar objects and try to understand by yourself what can and what can't be done.

As for the questions about the Object Data parameters, what you ask can't be done just editing them. The "Ratings" included in the Object Data are purely cosmetic: the "real" values are set in the BHAVs, especially the ability to gain skills.
The only thing you can do with the OBJD is to set the prices (buy, sale, depreciation etc); and yes, you *can* set a negative depreciation :)
With regards to renaming the "View" interaction, it is contained in the Semiglobals and managed vie BHAVs: you have to import the Pie Menu from the semiglobals and then edit the Text List that contains the "View" label.

thank you so much for this tutorial. I created my first table! whoohoo!

But now I'm confused as to where to begin to create another object like a chair or counter, because I want to make an entire kitchen set. The only thing I don't understand is in uv mapper, how do I know what size the bmp needs to be for certain objects. I know you have answered a question like this already, but can you tell me how I know what size the object is? is there somewhere that tells you that?

Also, are there anymore tutorials for object making with milkshape, like one for if you already read this tutorial? I'm stuck in a rut and the only thing I can make is a table...lol.

If you want the texture size to be the same as the original object's, after cloning the package you can just open up the texture image and see what the size is. The pixel dimensions are listed on the left. You can also export the texture image into a paint program and check the size there. But the texture (and therefore the uv-map bmp size) doesn't need to be the same as the original's if you use the DDS Utilities (http://developer.nvidia.com/object/dds_utilities.html). Then, when you import your own texture, you use the Build DXT option, and you can export different sizes (but it can't be any size, the dimensions have to be 64, 128, 256, 512 or 1024 pixels).

For the Milkshape tutorials, there can't be a tutorial for each and every type of object separately, but there are general (non-Sims 2 related) tutorials online that you can go through to learn the basics of meshing. A Google search should bring up some.

thank you for all your help. However I still can't figure it out. I've been contemplating weather to ask you or not, Cuz I know you have more important things to do, but I decided it's really important to me, so here goes:

I decided to stick with non animated, simple objects at first until I have that down, and so I created another table. But when I get thru mapping it and everything, when I upload it back to simpe, and try to replace it, it says it has too many vertices. Why won't it let me make more complex objects?

Also, I followed the making windows tutorial, and when I tested it in the game, it showed the wall behind it flashing pink on one side and black on the other side, but the window looked great in the catalog

SimPE will let you import objects with more vertices if you put it into Advanced Mode in the Preferences, but before you do that, you should consider if there were a way to make your mesh simpler instead. A very high number of polygons/vertices one objects may slow down people's games, and usually it's possible to lower it with using different tools provided with mesh programs or by redoing the mesh as a simpler version.

For the window problem, it's not really related to this tutorial but the window tutorial, so could you post your problem window package in the window tutorial thread and I could take a look? It looks like a problem with the wallmasks.

Go to Extra -> Preferences, and somewhere there you will find the option to tick the Advanced Mode box. After that you will have to restart SimPE for it to take effect.

Which object did you clone that disappears? When you zoom close enough, some objects will fade away, like the trees or stairs. Can you take screenshots?

I think the obect creation tutorials are using a different SimPE version, is there going to be an update to simPE version 0.58 (?)
Many Thanks :)

We can't update all tutorials for every new version of SimPE, but I don't think there have been signifigant changes enough in SimPE .56 or .58 to demand an update for this particular tutorial, anyway. If some step is unclear, you can always ask :).

Is it possible to easily make the whole dumbledore staircase and animate it?

This is not really a question related to this tutorial, but I would say "no". Not easily for sure.

Hi, I have the same problem now with one of my new meshes as kenny (very first post) did with his computer desk mesh.
Its not visible neither in the catalog, nor when i place it in a house. ther description shows up, but nothing appears in the game, only the green arrows/squares when you place the object, but not the actual object itself...

Now i know you told kenny to change that one name, but i dont know to which i have to chage it to make it visible? (surely ist not "desk")
I cloned the picture "Suspense" (its the bridge).

My question is now, to what do i have to change the naem, and in the future, how do i know what to change it to if i have other objects??

Thanks in advance for answering.

To find out what the subset name should be, open the Shape, and the Parts tab. The subsets listed there should be the same as those in GMDC.

hm...i tried that, but it seems to not have worked...?? i have no clue why. i looked where you said, and the name was SquareCanvasPainting. I guess thats a name i gave it when i created it. so i named renamed the file that was causing the problem to exactly that name like you already told kenny to.

is there something i still did wrong? (well...lol, obviously there is, cause it still wont show)

am i maybe not allowed to name it the way I want it??

Renaming the subset is not a part of the tutorial. You shouldn't change it because it makes things a lot more complicated :). The subset name for that painting is supposed to be paintinghorizontalbridge_bridge. Try changing it to that in both those places, then try again.

I just want to thank JWoods for his object creation tutorial. It was so clear that even I who knows nothing about making anything could follow it. So 3 cheers to you JWoods. Thank you, Peggy

Hi ignorant Bliss. I must have done something differnt wrong than typing in a different name, cause it still wont show up in my game. its just invisible. Ive changed like everything to the name you gave me but nothing changed.

Do you have any other ideas/suggestions?

otherwise i guess ill have to start all over again and just hope it will be solved and i wont do whatever i did wrong again...:(

thanks for all your help though!!!!!
