View Full Version : DIY Career Repair Centre, plus how to make careers EP ready (beginner's tutorial)

It recently came to my attention that a number of well written careers are not properly made up. It can be extremly frustrating to find a wonderful career that ins't EP ready, or is overwritng one of your favourite Maxis careers. Without the creator's permission, you cannot change them. This leaves people in a bit of a sticky state. I have decided therfore to create a simple, easy to use tutorial for fixing your favourite careers for your own use. It covers Guid and Group ID fixtures, and EP readiness . I hope that at least 1 person find it useful :)
The latest version of SimPE can be found here (http://sims.ambertation.de/en/download/).
The Guid and Group ID
In order for a career to not overwrite anything, the guid and group ID need to be changed. Let us take an example of a career where these values have not been changed.
The Group ID-
Open the career, click on Object Data in the Resource Tree. Look to the right and look at the file's group.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/One.jpg
If the group reads 0xFFFFFFFF, good. If not, you need to change it (whilst it is true you can create a Group ID from your guid, it is unwise to do so). Go to the top of the SimPE screen, and click 'Fix Integrity', then ok. You may need to search to find the 'Fix Intergrity' button. Save the file.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/Two.jpg
The Guid-
Click on the file in Object Data and write down the name of the file found in the filename box (highlighted). Next, click the text that says 'get GUID' near the bottom of the screen (also highlighted).
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/Three.jpg
A screen should pop up. If registered, re-name the career and click 'Register Object'. If you are a new user, register and follow the same procedure.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/Four.jpg
If you want, rename the career in the filename name (this isn't nessesary however). Commit your changes and save.
Your career will now no longer overwrite Maxis careers
Making a career EP ready
OK, time to explain how to make a career EP ready...
First stage is to open your career in SimPE. In the Resource tree, there should be a set of titles with a number next to each of them. Check the first number.
If it's 108, celebrate with a wild party- the career is already EP ready.
If it's 104, mourn for a day or two- you need to make it EP ready.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/Tutorial1.jpg
First stage is to work out what base your career came from (i.e. what career path did you edit?). For example, all my careers are based on the slacker career. Sometimes this will be available in the Object Data page-
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/Tutorial2.jpg
Once you've worked out what career yours is based on, go here- http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=49038. Download the file that contains the base career you're working from, so for me I'd take TS2USlackerCareer.rar
Open the new base career you've just downloaded and click on Behaviour Constant in the Resource Tree and click Fix Integrity, then OK.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/Tutorial3.jpg
You should see a column named Instance. You need to find instances 0x00001056 (called Tuning - Flags)
0x00001057 (called Tuning - Chance Card Levels)
0x00001058 (called Top Memory)
Select all three files, right click on them and extract them to a known location on your computer.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/Tutorial4.jpg
Done? Now go to Behaviour Function in the Resource Tree.
Locate the file with the Instance
0x00001002 (Called CT - Lifetime Want Satisfy)
Extract it to the same folder you extracted your other files to. Close this career and bring up your own career (the new one you're editing)
Now, click on Behaviour Constant. In the box with all the files to the right, right click and click 'Add'. It doesn't matter where you click.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/Tutorial5.jpg
Locate the first three files you extracted- they should read like the ones in the below screenshot. Select all three and click Open. Save your career.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/Tutorial6.jpg
Click on Behaviour Function. Repeat the file adding process, only now you want to add a single file, which should look like this-
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/Tutorial7.jpg
Save again, click Fix Integrity (just to stay safe) and save. Voila! Just check the number of files you have- you should end up with 108- hopefully :)
Feel free to ask any questions :)

This is my last chance to this career which I can't make it work.
This is a career based on chance cards, everything depends on chance cards so the promotion happends depending on the answer to the chance cards which are supposed to always appear with a chance of happening of 100%.
There are more surprises but these are the career's backbones:
1 Travel agent (promote by skills points)
2 Holidays (chance card: Fancy a trip? -> yes level 3, no stay in 3)
3 National trip guide to SimVillage (chance card: Fancy holidays? -> yes level 4, no stay in 3)
4 Holidays (same as 2)
5 National trip guide to SimBeach (same as 3)
6 Holidays (same as 2)
7 International trip guide to Simgland (chance card: Fancy a trip? -> yes level 8, no level 9)
8 International trip guide to Maxis Islands (chance card: Fancy being director? -> yes level 9, no back to 6)
9 Travel angency director (chance card: buy the agency? -> yes level 10, no back to 1)
10 Travel agency owner
Is a travelling guide career so the idea is, my sim goes to work (trip) and spend 20 or 18 hours working, while working a chance cards appears to say it will have holidays as returning from the trip and its answer makes it promote or not. Holidays is a level of the career so having holidays means promoting. While in holidays my sim has to pop around the office to check if there is a trip scheduled, that means it goes to work for just 2 hours and a chance card tells her/him if wanna go on a trip or stay at home for some more days. All rules like that but the first level which works as usual (by skills points).
The problem I found was: Chance of happening 100% doesn't work. I test everything and for me, with a 100% the chance card never happends. If I use a 99% it happens some times but just for holidays levels, keep not appearing for travelling levels.
Can anybody help? Superly? this career is starting being fustrating.
SOS :p

Here it is SuperFly. I can get the career to show in game, but no matter what lvl you hire in at or get promoted to, it always shows different when you check your job. Ex: you hire in at lvl 1, but are actually at lvl 4. I'm not sure what I did wrong. I used the bidou career tool in conjunction with SimPe.

The answer to your problem is that the career has 14 levels. I had this problem when creating careers with less/more levels than average- for some reason, the game puts levels 11 to 14 at the start of the female career tract. There isn't any real way to fix this, so I'd advise you take out some of the levels that you do not need.

Ok. The lvls now work fine. However, I have run into 1 other prob. I could not get my chance cards to work. I currently have 3 for testing. I went back into the file and found 1 was at 100%, 1 at 15%, and 1 at 85%. I reset them to 100%. They still do not work. How do I fix this? These 3 cards are not vital, but are important.

Thanks, I hope it will help me fix careers I've downloaded that don't work properly, although they're really good ones (or would be without the bugs), so they'd actually deserved to work fine. Maybe I'll be going to try an own career later myself (haven't a idea yet).

Does it freeze your game?
Do the money reqrds on levels 7 to 10 work corectly?
Is the career text appearing correctly?
The career should be working now, but please test just to make extra sure.

Hi superfly, I have the same problem as in this thread http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=150545
And I have looked everywhere I can think of for an answer, but nothing. It's just the display that isn't showing correctly. It doesn't work when your sim is searching for work (by paper or computer) or if you get a promotion. All it says is "there is an opening in the secretary career for a." Or "You got promoted to.!" If you look at the sim's jobinfo, everything is there. The problem is just in the "popup windows".
Ok, I hope I've managed to get myself understood. Sorry for the weird english.
I know there are others who have the same problem, but there are no answers yet. I would be so happy if you could figure this out. I'm such a newbie at all of this. Thanks!

Hello Super Fly. I seem to be having a problem trying to open object data. I bring up my created career in SimPE. Find the object data part in the resource tree. But thats where it ends. Nothing comes up to the right at all. I can click forever and never see anything. Any idea why that may be? Thanks in advance for any help you can give. BTW I do know that I will have to make it EP ready also due to it only having 104 instances.

I saw someone, in somewhere, saying that the solution is to change the "texts". I don't know what are the texts and don't know what to do...
Some careers are not showing up correclty. It just appears like a second "slacker carrer" or a second "medical carrer".
What do I have to do?

I followed this step by step, but some users are saying my career <i>still</i> overwrites another. I believe (although have not concluded) that it's because I did not replace the Orig. and Fallback GUIDs, since it didn't say to in this tutorial. Since I went through and read outdated tutorials, it says that you must replace those two. Is this correct? And if so, could you edit your tutorial to include those steps?

If you are new to SimPe, I guess that you still have to create your career.
This tutorial is about fixing an already existing career to make it compatible with University and newer EPs.
If you haven't create your custom career, yet, then follow THIS TUTORIAL (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=51901). When done, come back here and read this tutorial to be sure that your career is "EP ready".

A custom career should always appear in the game, if at least these two conditions are met (please double check, even if you are already 100% sure :P ) :
1) A new GUID has been correctly registered and written into the OBJD
2) All the files are assigned to GroupID 0xFFFFFFFF (if in doubt, do a Fix Integrity).
Plus, in order to be compatible with the EPs, it must have 89 BCONs.
If the requirements above are correct, then check the career in game using the testing cheats: open the cheatbox and type boolProp testingCheatsEnabled true; then load a lot, hold down the Shift key and click on the newspaper: all the existing careers should be listed in the menu.
Be sure that you don't have in the Downloads some older version of your career.
Alundra

i did the newspaper thing. its not there, thats how i know it doesnt work
the integ is fine
what are BCONs? and how do i check/fix that?
Numenor
4th Aug 2007, 01:49 PM
Open the career in SimPe and look in the top-left panel ("Resource tree"); there is an entry "Behaviour Constant (BCON)", with a number in brackets next to it. If the number says "(89)", then your career is EP-ready; if it says "(86)", that career will be available only in a base game with no EPs.
There is a tutorial about upgrading careers to EP-ready (LINK (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=49038)), though I don't know how up-to-date it is.
Browse the careers forum, and possibly you can find other tutorials about this subject.

Your career is perfect. Perhaps giving to the package a name that ends in ".package" would help
Jokes apart, your file is named "Alundran.career": rename it as "Alundran_career.package", or any other name that ends with ".package" and it will work fine (any file with extension other than ".package" is ignored by the game).

Hi Numenor:
I'm not the original poster of the "crappy GUID" issue, but I'm having problems with it myself. I'm attaching here my silly career (it's basic without many special things - it's the first one I've made). I've tried generating different GUIDs, and I've been through this tutorial a few times, but I still cannot get it to work. I hope you or someone can help!
There's a screenshot of the error message here:

And please let me know if you need the stack trace that the error mentions.
Thanks! :)

So I have followed these instructions several times with my new career and I'm still getting the 'crappy GUID' error message. How do you normally solve that?
Should the GUID be the same in all fields? (i.e. original, fallback, diagonal, grid align)
Thanks in advance!

So my bad. Apparently the error only shows up while in boolprop mode. When I was able to get the job by using the newspaper, there was no error at all. Strange! Sorry for the bother, but I think it should be fine if it's only giving the error in cheat mode.
crookedhalo
27th Jan 2008, 02:01 AM
That's strange. I don't have custom outfits attached yet. And I have the base game, uni, seasons, bon voyage, and open for business.
I think I just figured out what the issue might be. I think it is one of the vehicle guids. I've been having issues getting sim pe to understand that, so I'm going to try it without that.
Thank you so much for trying!
Numenor
27th Jan 2008, 02:06 AM
I was not lucky... I had no "Crappy GUID" error :P -
As soon as I accepted the job, I had another error ("Undefined Transition"), due to the fact that I don't have the custom outfits in my Downloads, and the game complained because it couldn't add the outfit in the family inventory.
Apart from that, I had no other errors.
Exactly, *when* should the error appear? What EPs should I use when testing the career? I tested it in a "Base+UNI" game...
PS: the "crappy GUID" may also be one of the outfit/cars GUIDs; double check them, too.
Numenor
27th Jan 2008, 11:56 AM
No custom outfit? I see that the various job levels are all associated to custom outfits, with GUIDs 0x00227705, 0x00227706 and 0x00227707 (see BCON 0x1055); and the list of associated pool cars contain one custom GUID (0x6CA4B49C) associated to level 10.
crookedhalo
27th Jan 2008, 05:06 PM
Well, I didn't set up custom outfits. I was working off Emma Barrett's template, so the outfits are set up with whatever was in them. But I was planning on adding custom outfits, so thats something tha twill be fixed. And the vehicle GUID was showing up wrong. It was supposed to just be the 'captain hero flyoff' I've fixed that and tested it in-game and it works now. I thought that might be the cause of the 'crappy guid' error message, but I still got it in boolprop only. Though one time I got the error message, and one time I didn't.
I think as long as it works when selecting the job the normal way (i.e, from the paper or computer) it should be fine though.
I just wanted to thank you again for checking out my career for me. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me tackle this!

Oh, addition to last post-I was tinkering some with Bidou's career editor while using SimPe, but that's been giving me as many issues as help, and I think that might have set up the outfit ids. Hm. Oh well, more playing around then :)

Saw some of you were having the same problem as over in the CC Tutorial thread, so thought I'd post the answer here as well.
After weeks of scouring the forums for an answer, realising that no one had figured one out, and putting various clues together, I have come up with the answer.
I've even tested it in my game to make sure it works. I feel like a detective now!
The problem isn't the GUID of the career itself. The problem is that the template career most of us are using has custom content for either the clothing or the cars, and those of us using it to create our own careers don't have that content. Therefore, when the game looks for the GUID of the clothes/cars, it can't find it. This also fixes the problem with the promotions not being acknowledged.
Vangaza actually posted the method earlier, but without knowing that it would fix this problem - someone had asked how to assign Maxis clothing in. Follow the link to find out how to change the GUIDs, and it should all be good... hopefully. It's about 3/4 of the way down the page, and includes a download list of clothing/transport GUIDs.

The forum that you are browsing, Tutorials for Custom Careers (http://www.modthesims2.com/forumdisplay.php?f=250), contains everything MTS2 hosts about creating a custom career; just browse it until you (hopefully) find what you need.

Okay, I apologize if there is an obvious answer and I've just completely missed it, but I've been looking around for hours with no success. Can anyone tell me, in plain English, how to open a custom career in SimPE? What folder would it be in? What would the file name look like in SimPE?
I've downloaded a career from MTS2 and installed it into my game, but I'd like to tweak it for my preferences. I've got SimPE (with Bidou's Career Editor) and am fairly familiar with it, but I've never tried this before. Sorry and thanks in advance!

I created my career using the Simpe career template (Which uses the science career as a base), but have found that although it doesn't overwrite the science career, it somehow makes it disappear. From what I have gathered - speaking to others - if a custom career is overwriting a base career, it would show up in place of the original career. That is not what is happening in my game: My sim who has the science career no longer has a job when i install my custom career, she is just unemployed. When I take the custom career out, she has her job again. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. I install the career template in the Simpe\data folder as instructed, and got a new GUID for the career, but somehow it is still interferring with the Science career.
Can anybody help? (This career ain't defeating me dammit!)

Hello folks :-)
I have a question/request. I created a custom career using SimPE and Bidou's Career Editor. I filled in all the bits - descriptions, wages, which days the sims would go to work, chance cards etc, and also made a custom career icon, which I replaced the original icons with. However, SimPE won't let me register as a new user, despite the fact that I've never used it before, so I can't change the GUID, and it won't let me change the Group ID either. This means that it overwrites the Science career track ingame. Can anybody either a) Tell me what I'm doing wrong, because I have no idea and it's very frustrating or b) change the GUID and the Group ID for me if I post the file on here? The career is EP ready though.
Thanks in advance for all and any help!! :-D
**Edit** Never mind! Please ignore this question. It worked straight away when I'd restarted SimPE. Gotta love computers.......

hi, thanks for this amazig DIY, but:
You said that
If it's 108, celebrate with a wild party- the career is already EP ready.
If it's 104, mourn for a day or two- you need to make it EP ready.
But what if there is 110?
The two extra things are something like "---user defined---" and i'm not sure if i can delete them. can i?

Itīs very frustating when you download a new career, but it doesnīt work. It is that this career doesnīt overwrite any other, but the chance cards, the guid and the title of the different levels are the same of the base career.
Iīve tried to check at SimPe if that information exists and it is.
What is the problem? I have all expansion pack until the moment.
Anyone can help me, please?

I was not lucky... I had no "Crappy GUID" error :P -
As soon as I accepted the job, I had another error ("Undefined Transition"), due to the fact that I don't have the custom outfits in my Downloads, and the game complained because it couldn't add the outfit in the family inventory.
Apart from that, I had no other errors.
Exactly, *when* should the error appear? What EPs should I use when testing the career? I tested it in a "Base+UNI" game...
PS: the "crappy GUID" may also be one of the outfit/cars GUIDs; double check them, too.
I've been having the same problem. I get the error message when my sims accept the job, or when they get a promotion (i've tested this and apparently the popup does not come up when promoted from level 3 to 4)
I used Emma Barrett's template also and I can't find anyone else to give an answer to this problem
I also thought the message was a joke. Still im quite perplexed by this predicament :wtf:
thank you very much numenor for helping with this

When you said to click the file in Object Data and click 'Get GUID'... Well, nothing comes up at the bottom, like it did in your screenshot. D:
Did I break it?
EDIT:
Wait, never mind, I found it. Silly me.

When I try to get a new GUID and click 'register new user' I get an error.
And then nothing happens. What do I do?

Never mind, I figured it out. /doh

Hello everyone, I am as dumb as a bag of hammers when it comes to creating careers. But I really want to either make a career or change one of maxis. I don't like the criminal career or the paranormal career so I would like to just change them to my own. It bothers me when I have a sim who works from home as a financial consultant but is considered unemployed. I would like to create or change a career to reflect this as self-employed consultant. I would also like to have no wages and no work hours so the car doesn't come for my sim. Is this possible and if so, is it difficult? If you are going to give instructions please type s-l-o-w-l-y...LOL

Every career I made has a different name and has a different GUID, but still of the four careers I can get only 2 of them work. if I play a bit with putting them in a different order (by putting them in a different map) it are always 2 different of the four careers that are working in the game.
What do I do wrong and what can I do to let them work all four of them at the same time?

Can anyone help me to figure out the problem of my custom career?
I have followed the instruction here and created a new career which is EP ready. I used Science career as the base career and modified the wages, working time, ability requirement, job title of all levels and chance cards. I also completed the group ID and GUID stuff. However, when I open this new career in the game, only the wages, working time and uniform can be showed up. While the job title, description of each job level and the chance cards content cannot be showed up. If would be great if anyone can help me to solve the problem. Thanks.

I feel like I only post when I have a problem...anyways.
I've been creating a custom career. I used Bidou's career editor, made it EP ready, and gave it a unique GUID. I did this once before, a long time ago, and I don't remember doing anything different than what I've done now (and yes, that custom career worked). I may have done things a little out of order, though.
However, no matter what I do, though my career is in the game under the proper name, and with the proper (new) icon, all the other information remains the same as the base career it was made off of (the science career). The job levels and descriptions, requirements for advancement, etc. I haven't seen a chance card yet, but given the evidence, I suspect they will be the same, as well.
SimPE does act a little funny...when I hit "fix integrity" it brings up a box labeled "scenegraph rename wizard". I don't remember it doing that before, but the text lists resources still go italic, indicating they've been changed.
Any ideas?

You don't need the Fix integrity thing.
I think it has to do with in which language string you added the text.
You can change that language string with BIDOU as well.
Maybe you can take a look at that.
ArotaAlehthrra
6th Jul 2010, 11:35 PM
The language strings appear to have all the correct information, in and out of Bidou's career editor. I'm kinda confused as to where it's even getting the science career text, because as far as I can see, none of it is in the package anywhere.
lientebollemeis
7th Jul 2010, 10:18 AM
Maybe you cloned it from the science career.
Have you tried to make another custom career? Or just adjusting the text of one you downloaded?
ArotaAlehthrra
7th Jul 2010, 12:43 PM
I re-made the career, using politics career as a base, and it's doing the same thing. The career name and icon are correct, it's not over-writing the original, but it's using the politics career text for career levels, descriptions, work times, pay, and promotion requirements. None of that information is even IN the new package!

This tutorial is super easy to understand! Thank you so much, your work is amazing! I've been wanting to create a new career for such a long time, but I also needed to follow another tutorial (This one!) and I thought it would be so boring and long! But it's not! It's interesting and super quick! Thanks again, I can't thank you enough!
