I was reading a thread about how to make great sim stories, and thought that a thread on what stories are great would be good/helpful. I don't read very many, as I'm not willing to slog through boring and stupid to find something good to read. However, I would like to read more good sim stories, and I'm sure everyone has favorites.
The only one I read is a melodramatic Buffy the Vampire type soap opera called Deception Pass. Good characters, lots of drama, great pictures, and the key ingredient - Sims I can tell apart just by looking at them! :D

there is a link to their livejournal up there now. It is ongoing.

Nothing wrong with shameless plugs Ana.
I ahve one here too, that I think is geniusly funny, but I'm not that picky about what I read, anything to procrastinate on my homework, lol. But I specifically like oceanborn's Dark reign of Ixindrennan, and Alcinoe's Left in Lunaville. My two favorite lesser known ones. And of course, SilentPsycho's Noir Arachni.

The Lambert legacy is excellent. http://forums.sims2community.com/story.php?p=1038153
It has pics and captions - ant that's it - no boring rants and cliche turn of events - and best of all no teen angst. It doesn't get updated as often as I would like - but when it does - it's worth it :)

Thanks for the rec. ani, the Lambert legacy is exactly right.
I'm usually not looking for sims novels, so this is great. :D
And it's funny.
And JadeElliot, thanks for the Broke Legacy rec. I love it! So creative!

I'm rather picky about what I read; it actually has to be a story that just happens to have pictures. Not a sentence or two describing what's going on in the pictures. And the writer needs to have a good grasp of grammar and spelling. I also like a good plot that hasn't been done fifty thousand times. Oh, and the persons sims can't be too realistic or ugly. So, um, yeah, picky. :D I'll give a peak at what you guys have linked. :)
Here's what's in my subscribed threads:
Homegrown (http://www.forums.sims2community.com/showthread.php?t=44879&page=1&pp=25) by aryxa <- A little slow going, but a good read none the less.
Noir Arachni (http://www.forums.sims2community.com/story.php?t=48053) by SilentPsycho <- Funny, good pictures, and updates semi regularly.
Children of the Night (http://forums.sims2community.com/story.php?t=49719) by annachibi <-Semi violates my rule of sentences only describing the pictures, but it's so damn funny! :D
And I have a few more, but the site they are on seems to be down.

Does anyone read mine? The Doings of the Vinestra Insane Asylum? Bit of a change from the endless supply of black widow stories. Not that they aren't excellent. I'm going to smile, recommend Left in Lunaville again and leave before I put my foott further in my mouth. Read my story!

I don't read many stories, but I have read The Little Things made by boolPropped.
http://forums.sims2community.com/showthread.php?t=39299
I really liked it.
It's not way too long (that's what bothers me so much in most of the stories, they're just going on and on...) and the pictures are great.

Jenny's Lana Logan Legacy here at SC2 is fantastic, it's much more than just a legacy, hell she ain't even started another generation, it's great. I love both Lana and her sister Laura, they're so like people I know that I can totally relate to them.
Simsagas's one, it was here a while ago and is featured here too. Can't remember the name but the stories were great and it was so fun watching the characters grow.
I also love bP's fics, all of them are really good. All really different but they all contain his voice. One that sticks in my mind is the Poverty Challenge, that was interesting to read.

I love Strangetown, Here We Come.
Story is great, characters and conflict really deep and a plot that can't be done by some random 12-yo on the Exchange.
Most of all, this story made me to play Strangetown (at that time, I exclusively play Pleasantview)
On the other side of the pond, I also follow one story in TSR (Cassandra's Search for Bella by Jubilant), a really good story as well.
http://pleasantview.simtv.co.uk/ This is also a good story, although it's more on a sitcom setting.
Mostly, I read stories about the Maxis sims, but I read other stories as well.

SilentPsycho's Noir Aracnhi - Just read it, and you'll know why :)
Derange & SSChan's Omerta: Code of Silence - I've started getting into the mafia stuff because of their story. Seriously, their story is top gun!
Another shameless plug...
Has anyone read my story? It's in my sig, anyways. It's called The Spirit House. I know, not a creative title, but still...

Where HAS Banished gone? :O I miss it. I must say that I ADORE the Death & Life of Ashlyn, so I urge anyone that doesn't read it already to start, and I started to read Gone by Romy. :) I also read Homegrown and the Lana Logan Legacy, all here at S2C. I also read Simplicist's legacies over at Livejournal. http://simplicist.livejournal.com/ I love it, it's so funny.
Seen as everyone else is doing it, I might as well mention that I've just started a story. ^_^ The Life and Legacy of Chelsea-Ann Murray. :D

I was just talking about Banished the other day and wondered what happened to it. Iris put a lot of hard work into that story. I never got a chance to read the ending either. *cries*
This site is full of talent.
I'm currently keeping up with:
Gone (RomyHorse)
When Cliques Collide (DarkPheonix)
Noir Arachni (SilentPsycho)
Left in Lunaville (alcinoe)
Some greats from the Completed section:
Welcome to Simville (Sim Sagas)
Lenny's Story (Romyhorse)
Two Very Special Friends (nerina)
Anything by Stormy.
There are so many others, but this post is all ready lengthy.

I wasn't aware that there had been an ending! *sob!* That was one of my favourite stories! Oh man. >_<
Oh yes! That reminds me. I read Elaine's Story, too, but it was ages ago- which is why it was odd that I'd read the first three chapters again this morning. xD To refresh my memory. I need to read it all over again, to be honest. xD

I'm not reading too many stories outsides this forum but I like anything about Strangetown......
Here at this forum:
The king and I (But it's gone. It has been since summer. I guess the author has stopped writing it. Such a tragedy! I shouldn't mention it when it's gone but I miss it too much)
Vinestra Insane Asylum (Furry's too funny story)
Lollipop Boy (Happycowlover. But I think it's abandoned too)
The Goths of Simrose place (jillysolo. It's finished)
Saving Pleasantview
Golden Threads (Seiza's medieval-like story)
The Power Of Words (Loco's dramatic story)
And there is a story I haven't read yet but I would like to read the whole thing one day: Children of ???? (the alien story from Frenchie)

I have one here, "Second Chances," but I admit it's a bit rushed.
I'm just not sure how to write a Sim story...from a "realistic" point of view, or from a Sim point of view.
I used to write a ton of fanfic, way back long ago...like in the 90s....
Peni Griffin
6th May 2011, 11:47 PM
Ms. Spears, excuse my while I pinch your little cheeks...
There. That's my elder moment for the day. (The 90s are yesterday..) As far as how to write the story - different approaches will work with different stories. A story with a cowplant that devours Bigfoot in it needs a very different tone from one from which excludes all those weird elements. Step back and look at the story as a whole. If it's funny, is it funnier told with a straight face as if this were all normal, or from the stance that the world was normal until suddenly a cowplant intruded on it? If it's dramatic, what's the most heart-wrenching way you can deal with the cowplant?
Think about how you felt when you played the story out. It will help you find the correct tone. And believe it or not, there's no rule that says you have to post it until you're satisfied that you've found the right one; so you can rewrite certain key scenes until you're sure you've got the balance you want, then write or revise the rest of the story around it.
For the most part, you'll find it's almost exactly like writing fanfic, except you have more control over how people react to the characters.

I loved the Paper Doll story, too (although there were moments were I had to roll my eyes -- it felt too much like a soap opera). Anyhoo, the girl in my avatar was inspired by Irina xD
I really liked the Nightingale story-- it was a breath of fresh air from all the typical romance stories. It was about an evil twin sister. The writing was excellent. Too bad the author no longer continued writing it >__<
Peni Griffin
12th Jun 2011, 03:11 AM
Whoa, thank you for that, Ms. Lukas, but I'd have to do a cost/benefit analysis before I did that. Would the skills learned and publicity gained be worth the time and energy drain from my (at least potentially) saleable work? There's also the factor that it would change my leisure gameplay. At the moment I'm using the game for fooling around with stories that are too loose or silly to work on; and enjoying the privacy to put things into the captions that I'd rather not pop up when a 10-year-old googles me for a book report. Never put anything online that you're not willing to see in print with your name under it. I'm not ashamed of anything I'm doing in the game, mind; but I'm not ashamed of anything I do with my husband, either, and I don't exactly want all of that googled, either!
Not to mention, I take crappy pictures. I'm not saying I couldn't be talked into it, but it would require a higher level of demand than I have any reason to expect to see.
Still, I was in post-conference letdown and you cheered me right up, so thanks!
