View Full Version : Stupid/random questions... (v3)

As far as I've been able to determine, it's completely random. No matter how seasoned my sims are at poker, there's still a 50/50 chance of them losing.

Is it possible to send a sim back through for a second degree, without losing the first?
EX: I send Johnny Sim through college, and have him major in Biology. He complete college, gets his degree, and ages to adult (they usually do age to adult right after getting their degree, right? Or am I remembering wrong? Could they stay as a YA, and re-enroll?). Then, I age Johnny back down to a teen again so that he can re-enroll and get a second degree, in, say, Chemistry.
Will he still have his Biology degree? Or will it have been lost in the de-aging or re-enrollment? Also, it is only teens that can go through college, adults can't re-enroll, right (If I'm remembering correctly)? (Kinda limiting, completely closing off any oportunities for adult education like that..)

if i want a family to have the season 'spring' to start with on a lot and i change the season chart in neighbourhood to spring, summer, autum, winter FROM ''winter'',spring,summer,autum..
will this effect other lots i'm already playing who i want to start with winter?
i guess what i'm saying is...does immediatly changing the season chart in neighbourhood change all your lots to that specific set up????
hope this makes sense... do we even really care...is life toooo short to be wasting time on questions like this... jeeze
:D...please answer my question o_0

anothereyjana: YAs turn to adults at graduation and it is not possible for adults to go to Uni. The degree they get isn't anything but a skill-set anyway so I'm not sure why it would matter what degree they get. I often have my sims choose a major that is not specified for their career lifetime want simply because I don't want them to have advanced their skills so far that they start out on level 7 of their career.
hellofromholly: When you change the season order, it changes it for the entire neighborhood. If you want each family to be in a different season than the one they are in, you'd have to go to neighborhood and change the season order before going to their lot.
aaries16
15th Aug 2010, 03:05 PM
hellofromholly: You don't have to change the season order for every family you play. If you are not playing the game in rotation, your lots could be at different seasons depending how long you play. For instance if your order is (winter, spring, summer, fall) and you play one family for 2 days they'll be in winter, if you play another one for 7 days, they'll be in spring when you come back to them. If you want to start a family's house in one season that the season order doesn't start in, use the weather/season changing thingy - it's an aspiration reward you can get with aspiration points.

Wicked Blue: Thanks. I honestly have yet to send a YA fully through college without hood/game explosion, so I wasn't entirely sure about the majors. I knew about the skillset thing, but I guess I thought that majors worked like getting a hobby plaque or a talent badge, where after you went through school you would get either a badge-like icon under skills, or a sheepskin to hang on the wall or something like that. Figures that Maxis would take the lazy way out on this. I just thought that it would be cool to make a super-educated/talented sim, who had gotten multiple degrees, or to simulate a double major or something. Ah well.

Don't know how the "redoing uni" thing would work, but you do get a diploma to hang on the wall when you graduate. So I guess if you could manage to send a sim to uni several times (by aging them down to teen when they graduate) you could get a wall-full of diplomas! I think they all look the same, though....

Have any of you experienced this:
I'm playing the DeBateaus. I had Armand get remarried.
He and his wife had two more daughters. Tara, at this point, was in private school, and her younger sister Melanie was in public school, as I hadn't gotten her into private school yet, since Melanie's mother had just given birth to Jacqueline.
There was a snow day. Tara cheered; Melanie didn't. The bus came. Melanie got on, but I couldn't click on the bus for Tara. Seems that the snow day was just for the private school and not the public.
I thought that was pretty weird. Or maybe not so weird; just never had that happen before!

I can't say for sure as I've never done it but I can see that ending up badly because of the memories thing. The sim would have memories of college, then of being a teen, then again of college and so on.

I've been playing Sims 2 since the base game was first released. Today I ran into something new. A sim was outside in a storm and was struck by lightning-but she didn't die. Her skin in now blackened and "burned". How can I fix her? She was gorgeous before she was hit. Not-so-much now and she looks very sad. Any ideas?

@dking38133 - send your sim to the shower, once she gets out she'll be normal again.
@AlexandraSpears - snow days for private and public school kids are usually different.

After a sim is shocked like that a shower or bath usually helps. If for some reason it doesn't - take the sim to the mirror and change appearance. Go to the full face make-up click on one of the options and then remove it. The black ash on the face should go away for sure.

A bit off-topic, but there have been times where I've had this glitch where their face is just a black or a blue blob. A trip to the mirror has always cured it.
But yeah, bathing has always helped for me.

Why is it that if my sim children can't get to one desk they give up and put homework on the ground when there are tons of other desks that they could use? Is there a fix to this?
mangaroo
17th Aug 2010, 06:23 PM
By default, all children in the household are programmed to place their homework on the desk "nearest" the main entrance. ("Nearest" is in quotes because, like pathing, the game's logic for identifying what is nearest the main entrance is not real-world logic. Sometimes players can use this to their advantage.) If there is no desk on teh lot, they dump their homework indoors as close to the main entrance as possible. If that fails, it's homework hunt time.
Mog has a mod you can use to assign desks: http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=312004

The "One Desk" thing still completely baffles me. Most of the time, when I build a lot, I just make sure there's a desk somewhere on the same floor as the entrance and my kids will pile their homework around it which is what they are supposed to do. I use Macrotastics at MATY and just select the kid and macro>do homework so they go to the spot where the homework is and do it without me having to hunt for it. Fabulous.
Except that after recently giving my legacy home a much needed makeover, it no longer works. There is a desk right there in the foyer just like it was before the demolition and rebuild but instead of putting their homework there, they now drop it by the mailbox. Without realizing this, on a cold winter day, I selected macro>do homework on all the kids like I always do and then ignored them until I suddenly noticed that every one of those kids were blue in their thumbnails. Poor babies were all sitting outside in several inches of snow doing their homework. It was a sight.
Random story is random. But if anyone can tell me how to make my kids recognize that the desk is there that would be wonderful. As it is, I have to remember to pick up the homework in buy mode and move it indoors before I have macrotastics take control. Kind of a nuisance. Are we not allowed to move the desk once it's been assigned? Because I'm sure in the renovation it got moved from its original location.

I just recently downloaded that and had no clue about that option thank you very much.
Ever notice how the Kat and Kim families are only playable once? You reset the neighborhood and they don't show up in the occupied lot bin anymore What made EA think that was a good idea? Much rather play a family with a storyline already started then the Ramaswamis.

Not that I can think of without mods. With default behaviors, as best as I can recall, you have to have some romantic interactions with another sim once their daily and lifetime scores are high enough and then they will fall in love. They will not initiate those actions autonomously. If you want to give up full control of your sim's romance then get a hack like ACR(Autonomous Casual Romance). Personally, I can't play without it. You can set your sim's gender preference and level of autonomy and then let them loose to romance whomever they desire, whether you approve or not.

I usually try to clutter up the desks or use one-tile desks, because invariably, the kids and teens can put the homework down on a desk, but when I ask them to do it they complain that they can't reach it. Stupid sims. Point of information - be careful about what area rugs you put down, because often the homework becomes invisible on them when put on the floor.

The times my children and teens put their homework on the right desk...they put it on the wrong side. I just go into Buy Mode and move it.
If their desks are upstairs, though, I prefer to leave it on the floor downstairs for when they are taught to study. I don't know how many time I tried to have them do this at the desk, only to have the parent/grandparent/whoever complain that something's in the way.

I don't even bother with a desk any more. Now, I just make the brat drop their homework by the mailbox. Later, when one of the parents is ready, they will teach the kid to study on a spot in the yard out of the way of things. After they learn to study, I just always make them do their homework outside on the ground. Desks are for computers and grownup purchases. Kids get a desk when they go to college.
If the darn spawn weren't so darn slow about taking their homework to a desk, no matter how close it is to the mailbox/bus dropoff, it's just far too irritating waiting for them to go to the desk, assigned or not. I had to remove the assigned desks mod because I never use it any more for that reason. Great idea if the kid runs to put the homework away, but I have no time to watch them move as slow as molasses in the winter.
It also means my decorating isn't limited always trying to put a desk for the kid by the front door. Another thing, when a parent would prepare a meal, the desk couldn't be on the same wall as the refrigerator/stove in the kitchen. Too many times a parent would dilly dally all the way to the desk that was assigned to a kid to serve a meal on the desk, then complain that there wasn't a spot available. Well, of course not! You just walked by the dining room table with several empty seats and an entire table for eating just to serve a plate on a desk that is not for eating. Geez! But I finally figured out that they must plan their route while they were cooking the meal, and technically the desk was closer because it was in the room on the other side of where the stove was. But they often had to walk through the dining room, a hallway, and possibly one other room to get to that desk and I couldn't tell them otherwise because the action couldn't be cancelled.
Life is much better with fewer desks to worry about.

Sorry, yet another question. I tried to contact EA Games for the solution, but was basically told that they were too busy to answer my question.
I used to run the Sims 2 (and all expansion packs, but no stuff packs) on my computer with Windows XP. After the computer got fried I got a new computer with Windows Vista and reinstalled the game. The game runs without crashing or any obvious issues, but I've just noticed now that the game isn't quite running right. I can't access the cheat menu by pressing Ctrl+Shift+C, and certain social interactions with NPCs aren't available even though you have a high enough relationship score for it (for example, the option for the NPC witch to turn me into a warlock would not appear despite being friends). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game with no success, and the problem occurs even when only the base game has been installed. Has anyone else had issues like that?

What are the requirements for meditation?
When my elders start living alone and have gotten to a boring stage, I will make them meditate with only a few breaks to call their children, to make sure the kids get the inheritance they deserve. But I have this one elderly guy who just does not have the option to meditate. He has 7 points of logic, which I thought was over the requirement needed to meditate, so why can't he meditate?
Also, just a curious question since I haven't run into it yet, but I will in the future...what happens to an urn or tombstone that gets left on an apartment sublot and there's no one left in the apartment? Will it still be in the apartment when the next tenant moves in or will it be gone like the other furniture in the apartment upon move-in? I have quite a few elders (single and couples) living in apartment lots and I just want to be sure that their urn/tombstone will be able to be transported to my community cemetary lot after their death.

mangaroo

The police come to your home if you call them, if you have a burglar alarm (and the burglar sets it off), or to return delinquent teens caught sneaking out. The police do not arrest playable Sims; they will only arrest the NPC burglar.

Here's a stupid question: How do you throw a party? Yes, I am serious, I can't figure it out.
lauratje86
1st Sep 2010, 10:10 PM
Use the phone, and select the "Throw A Party" option. This may then give you a choice of parties, depending on the time of year and whether any sims are 24 hours away from growing up or are engaged (and which EPs you have!). The basic option is "House Party", but there are also birthday parties, New Year's parties, sports parties, wedding parties and anniversary parties.
When you've selected the type of party, a screen comes up where you can select who you want to invite. Select the sims you want to come, then click OK or Select or whatever the button says, and your sim will invite them by phone. A while later they'll all turn up (unless they're out at work or don't like your sim), and then you have to make sure they have a good time so that the party is a success!:-D

Funny the phone never says throw a party. XD It just gives me an option to call for service, or call sim.
mangaroo
2nd Sep 2010, 11:20 AM
There are time restrictions on when you can throw a party, so the option doesn't appear between midnight and 8am. However, if your Sim never gets the Throw party... option on the phone, then you have a glitch in your game and should work through the Game Problem FAQ linked in the TS2 Help menu.

You need a hack to hire anyone who lives on the same lot as the owner. I believe Squinge created one, and it's available at InSim. If you can't locate it, please ask in WCIF. (For the record, I think the name of the hack emphasizes hiring family members. I'm just pointing out that the problem isn't the relationship, but the residence.)

There's an Aspiration rewards object, I can't remember what it's called, in the description it talks about "reprogramming" your Sim.
Making sure your Sim is at least in the gold aspiration, use it to change aspiration (don't have to do that), and turn-ons/turn-offs. (I think if your Sim is in the green or lower, they might get the Grilled Cheese aspiration. Yum.)
One time I had two Sims in love with each other, had the same base personality, except they had been encouraged in other traits (one was neat and serious, the other sloppy and playful), they had two bolts of chemistry. One was Knowledge and the other Pleasure. I changed the other Sim's aspiration to Knowledge, now they're three bolts. (I changed aspiration during university, though.)

Why is it that Jessica Peterson, who I had grow up badly, had 16 days remaining in life, while her ex-husband Armand, who grew up well (green aspiration), got granted only 13? I didn't think that was fair.

The difference between red and green aspiration isn't much. When sims turn elder they get a random remaining life of 10-20 days (15-25 if plantsim) which is then adjusted by their current aspiration level: : -2 (red), 0 (low half of green), +3 (high half of green), +7 (gold), +10 (platinum). So a red sim could still get as much as 18 days while green sim might be as low as 10-13 days depending on where in the green range he is.

How do I prevent Sims from getting the "See first snow" memory?
Uninstall Seasons. It's doubtful there's a hack to prevent the memory from generating, but you can always ask in WCIF. It's likely that Pescado's batbox includes weather memories among the "junk" memories it clears, but you'll also lose lots of other memories you might want to keep.

I have questions about when you age a Sim down to child.
(I use SimBlender, that way their grade is set to C+. Use boolprop and it's set to F, which brings the social worker to your door.)
When I do this, they still have a lifetime want, even though they have the Grow Up aspiration. And a couple of Sims I've aged down are still rolling wants for Throw Sports Party, and parents are still rolling wants for that child to be an overachiever (that's if they were originally a teen).
Is there anything I can do, like in SimPE, so they won't have the lifetime want, and so their wants are more age-appropriate?

Can elf ears ever reappear in a family line if the offspring of an elf + "human" Sim have normal ears? After two generations, I am losing hope. Logic says no, the child's face sculpt is a mishmash of its two parents' faces and there are no recessive genes for facial elements. Game code says...?

Is there a way to determine how much money a townie/downtownie has other than asking? The answers seem to have no bearing on actual funds. Sims that say 'Oh yeah, I've got loads of money ($$$) will move in with a pittance, and sims that have nothing ($) also move in with nowt. I want my sim to marry a particular downtownie, but I would like him to be rich so she can get the 'Married a Rich Sim' memory.

If you have SimPE, you can see how much money that downtownie's household has, keeping in mind that when they marry your playable, they bring along 10% of that amount.
You can also use that program to change how much money they have.

Hi, I have a couple of questions. (After twenty pages of reading questions, my eyes are bleeding, so I apologize if anyone else has asked these, I just couldn't get through the 215 pages of the thread.)
1) :wtf: Why do Sims act meanly toward other Sims they don't know at all, or hardly know? I have a very large family. Oldest brother is in another lot, and a married vampire with a vampire spouse. He keeps coming back to the family home, running inside the house from wa-ay across the lot, and shoving his younger sister who wasn't even born before he moved out. He doesn't know her at all, and he's just horrible to her.
Why is he doing that? He'll walk past the house if she isn't there, but if she's home from school (she's still a child), he'll run in (even though I have the doors set to "Only allow household") and shove her around, leaving her crying. I can't get him to stop picking on her, and I don't know why he's doing it, but now she hates him.
2) Is there any way to fix a Sim who's got a body-part stuck in mid-action? For example, his arm is raised like he's putting a book away, and it's stuck that way. He works in all other respects, except that one body part doesn't ever change position. Anyone else ever had this happen?
Thanks!

Not sure how advisable this advice is but to fix his arm you could turn TestingCheats on and force an error on him and then choose "reset". That might work.

You should be able to type moveobjects on in the cheat bar, delete the sim, save the lot, exit and re-enter and they should be reset. You're unlikely to get a problem with this but I'd make a backup just in case.

Sims can get caught for calling in sick if they are not sick. It happened to me so long ago that I don't remember the consequences. I thought my Sim was fired, but according to the Prima guide for Uni (<- just letting you know this is older info and Prima is not the most reliable source), they just take a job performance hit. Also, from the same guide, they are only susceptible to being caught if their job performance is below 50% and if they are not actually sick when they call.

In America at least, "There's" can be either "There is" OR "There are." It's a bit awkward to say "There're," I've never heard anyone say it. It's not grammatically correct to use "There's", but EA isn't grammatically correct either.
My question now. Why do toddlers sometimes not cooperate with adult sims when learning to use the potty? Is it low mood (which makes no sense, since I'm trying to raise the mood, hello!)?

I always kind of figured that it was because their bladder motive (or something else?) was so low they couldn't concentrate on being potty trained..... The only time I've had toddlers not cooperating is when they are tired. What do the other motives look like when they aren't cooperating for you?
mangaroo

Toddlers will not cooperate on the potty if they are too tired, too hungry, or if the toddler has bladder desperation queued. So, what both lauratje86 and wickedblue said. *echo*
What bugs me is that even though they don't cooperate or empty their bladders, the potty now needs to be emptied before it can be used again.
wickedblue
26th Sep 2010, 03:29 AM
Yea, that really grinds my nerves too. That's usually when I make an exception to my no cheating policy and just replace it. If the toddler is in such a state, taking the time to empty an empty potty is not going to make the situation any better.

If I move my entire Sims 2 game to my external hard drive that has 1 terabyte of space and play from there, could that help with the slight game lag that I experience at start up and sporadically during the game? I know the RAM of space is different from RAM of memory but just how different?

You can try that, but I don't know whether it would work. TS2 requires files in the registry to function, and you can't copy those over. The game might be able to access them from an external HDD, but I wouldn't count on it.
HystericalParoxysm

HRPuffNStuffAddict - You'd have to uninstall the game from your regular hard drive and reinstall it to the external. That way would work (not copying) but it's not going to speed things up any. In fact, it might slow it down a little as it will be slower reading from an external drive than an internal.

Premade families show up in every neighborhood - for some reason EA is under the impression that you would want to play them. I wouldn't delete them - that would bork your game. Placing them into the neighborhood and killing them would work better if you want to get rid of them.
By the way, if your game isn't patched, the Ottomas family is messed up - Samantha's unborn twins will have a different father, which could be from another neighborhood, or could also be a dog. Get the Seasons patch to fix it, or get the InSim or SimBlender to abort her pregnancy.

Yes, you can, if you also don't care about the townies. The tutorial here http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,10798.0.html details how to make a custom neighborhood with no sims whatsoever. It requires you to edit files in the game's Program Files directory which means you could very well end up messing up your game up royally. Therefore, I wouldn't suggest it unless you really know what you're doing. I see no reason that simply deleting the premade families from the bin would bork your game up, though.

^Once a sim is in the Sim Bin... they're a part of the neighborhood and they don't leave until they die. You could, but it would lead to corruption. However, not as fast as if your sim had already met them, of course.

I've read that it's vaguely okish, but still not too advisable, to delete families from the sim bin before you've played the neighbourhood at all. But if you play a family in the neighbourhood then the sim bin families can come up in sim's memories and gossip etc, and hence deleting them can corrupt your game, even if the household(s) you played haven't met the sim bin sims at all. Not sure how reliable that info is, though, as I can't even remember where/when I read it!

Deleting characters still leaves some dangling information, most notably their wants and fears, which can lead to babies becoming toddlers and having LTWs and adult wants (because the deleted character's file has been re-used). I believe you can delete in-game if you use SimPE to clean up all their remaining data, or use Theo's Deleter (http://theos.chewbakkas.net/tools/sim-deleter-tool.html) plug-in for SimPE and delete them from within SimPE.

I know it's not updating, but there was no important changes in game either (not counting M&G). And from my testing I achieved messing the game only when I changed looks of NPCs or tinkering with them in other ways, which was predictable by common sense. So, are there other reasons not to use this?

Insimenator is no longer supported. I'm not even sure there's a place at the relocated insim forums to ask about its use. Since neither MTS nor MATY is going to provide support for using a mod abandoned by its creator, the people who operate those forums are going to steer players toward supported mods, like the Simblender.

If you go into neighborhood view there should be a button (like where you click to add downtown, shopping district, etc.). Click on that, and you can determine what season goes in what quadrant. Most neighborhoods have Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring (in that order); Riverblossom Hills has Winter, Winter, Spring, Fall.

Is it the Pescado (I think?) one that takes into account the price of furnishings when you rent an apartment, and makes you pay a deposit for them so that you can't just sell them whilst you live there and then move out with the extra money?
No idea what it's called though, I don't have it in game either so can't check for you. I know I've seen it somewhere though, most likely on MATY, on insimenator.org or on here.

That's the apartment hack from MATY I do believe.
IIRC: It doesn't affect the amount of rent you pay, but you get charged for the furniture inside - the higher amount means you buy all the furniture, the lower amount means you buy just the appliances (kitchen and bathroom). I think the reason for this was that you could get free money by renting a place, selling all the furniture and then moving out because you wouldn't get charged for the stuff you sold.

It's MATY Apartment hack indeed, called apthack :) I guess I added it along with all mods in Director's Cut months ago right before uninstalling the game and I believe I didn't play apartments back then. Now I began playing again, by using the saved games, and was all clueless why the rent is so high. Thank you!

You're welcome, Amairani :)
el_flel: Despite not being able to remember where I saw this hack, that's what I remember the reasoning behind it being too :-) So it is from MATY.I knew it was definitely from MATY because I have it and there was a WCIF not long ago asking for something that the hack did. But I couldn't remember if that was indeed the reason behind having the different prices - you posted whilst I was still typing mine so when I saw yours afterwards I thought we were right as we can't both have been wrong (well, we could, but it would be pretty weird if we'd both said the wrong thing!).

I think that downloaded sims appear in the "select a sim" bit in CAS, and downloaded pets appear in CAS as new breeds.

Just a couple of "deleting" questions:
I know that it's safe to do whatever you want with the screenshots and thumbnails in the "Storytelling" sub-folder in the "Neighborhoods" folder, but what about the ones which say "webentry_...."? Are those safe to delete? I've been leaving them alone, but, if it's okay to get rid of them, I'd like to.
What exactly is/isn't safe to delete in-game? I know that you never delete things from body shop, or sims from the sim bin, but that you should delete hoods directly from the game first before doing anything to the files in your Sims game folder, but what about objects? I.e, would going into Buy Mode and deleting a CC sculpture with the game trash can be bad? I know that you should never do it if it's an EAxis item that was already in the game that somehow got a CC star, but what about an item that's just straight CC?

The only reason I can think of not to delete cc items from Bodyshop/CAS would be the strong likelihood that you are leaving behind an orphaned mesh in your Downloads folder. Deleting from within the game removes the recolor, not the mesh. The orphan doesn't do any harm, but it does take up space, add to load time, etc.
I've never deleted cc objects from within the game. There (in the case of objects with more than one texture), I would think the danger would be deleting the recolor that is actually the mesh. Isn't inconsistency wonderful?

1) Is there any way to pick what table to sit at when dining out? Seems like they always sit you in the same place :( (other than at the bar, of course)

From my experience, it's always the next free table from the podium (linear distance, walls don't matter).

Thanks mangaroo, I guess you're right about not knowing exactly what you're deleting when you use the in-game method. I'm still kind of curious about the "webentry" files though, since I don't know what it is they do, and I've almost accidently moved or deleted them before, and I didn't want to screw something up.

From my experience, it's always the next free table from the podium (linear distance, walls don't matter).
I tried to figure this one out when I was making my OFB shops. In my game, it is rarely the table closest to the podium. At that downtown crypto whatever place, they always made my sims sit at the outside tables, no matter what the weather was like.
In my business lots, I moved tables all around trying to find a pattern before giving up. Now I usually make my sims sit at the bar if they are made to sit somewhere stupid the first visit to the restaurant. Until I've had a chance to change the tables around.
And another reason I couldn't stand going to those downtown places to eat (especially the crypto) is they often had only one table being used, yet the hostess tells my sim they didn't have any tables available and my sim should have called ahead. What?! So, I'd make my sim play pinball or something to wait for a table opening. Hell, I was so mad keeping my sim playing pinball for two hours while only one table had a customer the entire time. I should have killed off that hostess. Maybe I will install downtown to my custom hood just so I can kill off all the sims in those downtown restaurants.
One time, I remember putting a locked fence around a table I wanted my owner to eat/take a break at. The table was not the closest to the podium, but I didn't want him to go all the way to the break room if the restaurant suddenly got slammed with customers. (Which usually happened every single time my owners tried to take a break when their business was opened. Or that reviewer would show up and say my sim was lazy.) Every guest was shown that table to eat at, although the fence was locked for household members only! Then the guests would stand there upset because they couldn't eat at that table.
I like making restaurants, sometimes owned, sometimes just regular comm lots. But it rarely goes like I planned on opening day. Or the first day I bring another playable to an owned lot after changing the seating. The seating is always different for my playable and I just try harder to make sure I like ALL the tables knowing that whatever one I don't want is where my sim will be seated. I usually want my sims sitting where I can still watch the other sims without moving my camera, because it isn't fun watching my sims sip water and eat. And if I don't watch my sim, another sim will come along and steal their food and nearly starve to death before I figure out why they are still drinking water.

If I want to sell fish that you catch in Seasons on OFB displays, do I have to have it in the bakery style displays (where theres a glass window)? Will the fish go bad if I just put it out on regular displays?
anothereyjana
16th Oct 2010, 05:46 AM
@lazzybum--One way to get around that could be using Paladin's fish-packing station at Sims Wardrobe. You pack them in bulk and, since they're crated, I'm pretty sure that they don't go bad. As for the types of in-game shelves, however, I think that you're always supposed to put (non-deco) foods in the bakery displays anyhow. I know that you have to if you're selling drinks and such. I'm not sure if food goes bad in them or not, but I would assume that if the cakes and such don't start rotting, then the fish will probably be okay too.
cheshirekat
16th Oct 2010, 09:22 AM
The deco chill displays are supposed to keep food forever. But there's a glitch in the game, so if your environment score goes bad, it is one of the deco chills.
You can only place one fish per shelf in the deco displays - and then the customers can only buy one at a time. Hardly worth the time and energy unless you don't want your sim to make money.
Get the fish packing station so you can sell a crate of five fish to your customers. Then the price is more like 100. But get your sim to fish a lot before you open the store so they have a good inventory. Especially if they aren't going to sell other stuff that is more expensive. Then sell, sell, sell!
Edited to add: I know it is nearly 24 hours since I replied but I had to edit to ask a question. Two questions. Maybe a bunch of questions.
Is it okay to change the names of the pre-made families? I'm talking about the playable ones, not the sims that could mess up the hood if they are messed with.
What other ways can increase the sun for plantsims besides making them hang out all day outside? Will the greenhouse lamps work? I've tried everything and the only think I hadn't tried was meditating. When I had my plantsim meditate during the night, her needs didn't decay as quickly. However, that is much much too boring for me because the game doesn't automatically speed up when all the other sims are asleep or at work. I think. I could be wrong.
Anyhow, I would like tips on taking care of my first plantsim family. I have them in the sim bin now while I'm building them their own house.
Engram
18th Oct 2010, 12:44 AM
@cheshirecat: the greenhouse lamps will work to increase the sun motive. I usually put a couple in the house, in spots I know the plantsim might use at night, such as over the computer or a couch/chair the family most often uses for reading books or watching TV. Helps to have them in the greenhouse or outside (placed with moveobjects on) over the crops they're going to be tending, too.

Also, Plantsims don't sleep (an annoyance here--along with Servos, but at least you can shut them down). That can be good when caring for toddlers...but unless you have them studying a self-help book, forget using the fast-forward "button" to speed up time....
cheshirekat
18th Oct 2010, 08:30 AM
Thanks for the tips.
For some reason, I always forget about using moveobjects on and that was very helpful. But those lamps are major expense. So, I just bought them a few and will just have to move the lamps around when my sims move around. At least until I have some other plantsims move into the house. When I checked out some of the other plantsim townies I created, it looked like the game gave most of them jobs, so most are employed, even if they aren't at the top, it should be a help with the expenses. Maybe then I can build them a proper greenhouse as I just have all their plants outdoors along with some fruit trees for now.
I'm still debating whether or not I should add a regular sim to the household. Mainly so I don't keep getting angry that these greedy townies always visit with their hunger near red. My plantsims don't need to eat, but they spend too much time making meals for greedy sims. Hard not to notice when some of the townies will even take two plates at a meal of the fish my plantsims caught. I didn't think more than one plate of sparkly food was ever needed. At least, it never has been in any of my households since I got Seasons.
Too bad I can't give my plantsims some orange juice or something to boost their sun need.
I was tempted to make one of my plantsims use a bed, just to see what would happen but sleeping wasn't an option when I clicked on it. Too bad. I guess fishing, meditating and television are the only activities they can do for long periods of fast speed play, so I don't have to micromanage every second of their lives.

Plantsims are awesome for businesses. My most successful OFB owner ever was a plant sim - lived on the business lot 24/7. With a shower, an easel and a sunlamp and doing nothing but painting and selling the paintings that sim was loaded. And it was immortal as it did not age (being on the lot in the shopping district). And you can put them on fast forward while they are creating inventory....I mean art.

One of my plantsims just left for work. They are in the criminal career. I decided to play them a little while before changing what the game gave them. Anyhow. She is a popularity sim and just finished making friends with a visitor. It was too late to invite another friend over to fulfill her ltw of 10 best friends. (She has only one best friend so far.) And when I looked to see what other wants or skills she had, I was surprised that she wanted to have a great novel. So, I had her get busy writing a novel under her sunlamp at the computer. Her first novel was Great. Easy points there. So maybe she will be my hood's first writer.
I have a little shack I made at the edge of town I created for a writer or an artist. Although I'm not sure that would be a good fit for her. And right now they can't afford to lose any members of the household. Maybe after two more plantsims have moved into the house.
I've been trying to imagine running a business with a plantsim. So far, I'm not seeing it. Maybe because I'm not really attached to any sims in my new hood yet. Still at the stage where I feel like I'm just poking at the experiments in progress. Although I am much more interested in seeing the next sim walkby. I can't believe how many of the custom townies I created and have completely forgotten while I was busy building houses and comm lots. Some of them I am a bit more anxious to play. But first I gotta try out the happiness spores and making a plantbaby. Do they plant a seed in the ground for a plantbaby? Does it get fertilized and watered? I looked through a ton of Seasons older threads (guess we don't get to search at MTS these days.) and the sparse wiki but found nothing useful about plantbabies.

I just got my first plant sim a couple of weeks ago. I wanna know EVERYthing. Hehehehe.
Not the same for a regular baby - hoping that doesn't mean they are babies longer than regular sims. Sure hope I can use simblender to age them up if I don't like them.
I do recall reading somewhere that they skip one or more of the age groups, but there were not a lot of details. I like having details before I embark on the journey of letting my sims have babies since I don't like babies/kids.
I should have played Rose Greenman in Riverblossom to learn more about plantsims. But I was too busy playing my own sims. And Marla Biggs and The O'Mackeys. Gabe O'Mackey wanted to be a plantsim but I kept trying and trying to make it happen for him. And I didn't have any garden/plant hacks at the time, so a fair number of tomato plants died. And I remember the gardener used to leave the greenhouse door open all the time in the winter and all the tomatoes would be frozen in that tiny greenhouse.
I have a fresh and clean RiverBlossom now if I want to play him later. But first I gotta have a good plan for all the plantsims I created for my hood.

Plant babies are "born" as toddlers and have the needs of a plant sim. Playing outside in the sun or under the greenhouse lamp, a bath or playing in a puddle and some hugs is all they need. IIRC, they inherit their parent's skill points. As AlexandraSpears said, they grow up directly to adult, perfect if you don't like to play kids. ;)

Not sure what VBT stands for. But for moving them to another university hood, I would think it would be problematic just like transfering families to different normal hoods. Mainly because your sims will still have all their memories from their present hood. You should read this: http://www.simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Moving_Sims

Sims can be moved between subhoods of the same main neighborhood without damage. In the neighborhood Pleasantview, you can move your Sim from Pleasantview to Pleasantview > Bluewater Village to Pleasantview > Sim State to Pleasantview > Academie Le Tour.
Sims should not be moved between main neighborhoods unless you follow the procedures in the link lazzybum provided. You should not move your Sim from Pleasantview to Veronaville.
There are, however, some concerns about redundant characters spawning when you attach more than one Uni to the same neighborhood. Nothing to do with moving the Sims. (Also, my megahood has all three Unis attached so I can't pretend it is the ultimate DOOOM.)

You don't have to clear the the objects and walls on the ground floor in that area. When you make the hole in the foundation for the proposed basement just go to the lowest level view and start cutting away at the foundation. When you go one floor up, the main floor will look weird because the spaces that didn't have objects now have no floor, but just fill it back in as needed. I'm sure there's a more detailed tutorial around here on how to add a basement to an existing house - it's actually quite simple.

When you delete cc eyes, the display defaults to the eyes on the skintone the Sim is using, so I assume that's a custom skintone, as well.
The DNA for the missing eyes can be passed down for generations. I find fiddling with DNA in SimPE too bothersome (which is why I'm keeping eyes and skintones I would rather be rid of, darnit), but the absolute best thing for you to do is to edit this Sim's DNA: http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=186939
(Ignore the instruction to create a new Sim -- wasteful! -- and just find a Sim in the game whose eyes you want to use.)

I haven't managed to get a sim all the way through college without accidently doing something to cause a hood/game explosion, so I'm wondering--at what point does the "graduation" cinematic start? Do they go directly from the cinematic back to the hood they came from, or does it give you some time or something?
It's just that I'm developing a system within my hoods where, when a teen is sent to college, they go with a bunch of stuff in their inventory to decorate their dorm room with (since I plan on only giving the college-bound a bed, dresser, and desk within their room, like in real life), since that will help solve the problem of what to do with the things the playables keep dragging home from owned businesses, and would let some sim-families have "heirlooms" they could pass down through generations. I was wondering when I should have them "pack up" (put back in their inventory) all of their stuff so they don't have to leave it behind.
tlynnjpeg
28th Oct 2010, 10:47 PM
They move as part of the cinematic (which, if you're throwing a graduation party, comes when the party timer gets to zero). So you'll want to pack them up before the cinematic starts. If you miss it, though, you can always pack it into the inventory of another sim still on the college lot (if there is one), invite the graduated sim over and give it all as a gift.

In my game, they don't get forced out of the Uni campus as soon as they graduate. They are given 72 hours to vacate. During that time I usually have them harvest the last of their garden goodies. Maybe the difference is that I never throw them a party. So after they take the final exam, they are done. Then I just use the phone to have them move back to their hood before the 72 hours is up. At that point, it is too late to have them pack up any stuff because the outfits are chosen and then the cab arrives to take them.

Even if you throw a graduation party, there are a few sim minutes after the cinematic while the sim is waiting for the taxi that can be used to access the inventory & pack everything into it. The lot still sees the sim as active after they've gotten into the taxi too, so there is always time to steal all the cool dorm stuff!

Wow, thanks everyone! I wasn't expecting that many replies! :P
EDIT: Nevermind, I found the culprit; it's either Pescado's Macrotastics, or the Useable Lightsaber mod from Sims Cave. Since Pescado's mods/hacks aren't known to conflict and are clearly labeled if they do, I'm guessing that it's the lightsaber. FYI, if you have the lightsaber mod, you may want to take it out before playing households with Plantsims, since it seems to bork/break the ability to release spores and spawn Plantbabies (at least, it did in my game--it seems like each person's game is different in what makes it upchuck. Gotta love the amount of testing and science this game requires just to play it. :/).

An alien with white skin?? Is that a custom skin that you have in your game, then, or am I confused??Well actually one of my male sims got abducted and had an alien baby with white skin...I probably should have mentioned that =P
lauratje86
6th Nov 2010, 01:08 AM
Hmmm... White as in the really pale Maxis skin or an actually white custom skin that the male sim who got abducted had? Or do you have extra (downloaded) pollination technicians with white custom skins, or a default replacement alien skin to make all aliens have white skin?
If it's the really pale Maxis skin then I have no idea, I don't think that that should happen - I believe that all half alien babies (from abductees) are supposed to be born with green skin like the pollination technician.
If the father (sim) had a custom skin it could be that it is coded so that it was equally dominant or more dominant than the green alien skin, in which case the half alien's babies could have either white or green skin, depending on who they have babies with and on chance.
If you have extra PT's with white skin, then no, the half alien wouldn't have the green skin gene to pass on.
If you have a white default replacement alien skin, then no. If the half alien had a baby with the white skin and you removed the white custom skin from your downloads folder, then the baby would, I think, have the green skin instead, but so would its parent and any other alien sims in your hood that did have white skin. I'm not 100% sure if I'm right on that, but I think I am.
So, ummm; don't know, sometimes yes, no and not without removing a default replacement, depending on the circumstances.... :-D Or if it's some kind of random glitch, then who knows!? I hope that helps somewhat, at least! :-)

Does anyone knows how to delete a Sim's outfit? (one of my Sims grew up and the clothes he changed into were fugly- so how do I delete that?)
And I download a few buy mode CC (poseboxes, to be exact) which doesn't appear in the buy mode of Community Lots. How do I make them appear?

For the first if it is maxi's content no way to delete it although I believe there are some hacks or mods knocking about that let you hide it. Best thing to is just buy some new clothes and have the sim go to wardrobe or dresser and selct option plan outfit and change from there. If it is cc clothing you can delete in the CAS or bodyshop or use clean installer.
Sorry I have never used poseboxes so I have no idea why not re-read the thread you downloaded from to see if there are instructions or failing that contact the maker.

Is there a way to rename jobs in any given career track? Like instead of "rock god," can you change it to "pop star"? For example.
mangaroo

Yes, you would need to create a mod that overwrites the text strings of the Maxis' careers with your preferred text. It would probably be significantly easier than creating a whole new career. I would check out the tutorials available in the Create section.

I noticed something browsing through the Storytelling folder, both the general game one, and the ones for individual neighborhoods. Both the general Storytelling folder and the Storytelling folder for my Uberhood (but not my custom hood) have these XML files named "webentry_04086" (or similar number configuration). Since they pop up in the general Storytelling folder, I'm guessing they're there because of Maxis, but what exactly are these files and what (if anything) do they do? Are they leftovers from the EADM and it's "phone home" feature, or is it something else? Is it safe to delete them?

Hi. I have Bluewater as my pleasantview shopping district. I'd like to add another shopping district using a different terrain, move the bluewater charactors and the houses over to that, and eventually delete bluewater. Is this okay to do, or a no no? If its okay, should i move the sims out of their houses before moving?
I hope its okay to put this question here.
Cheers!

I've deleted Bluewater Village several times when I've started a new hood because I just don't like it and don't think it is worth keeping in the game. I just put all the Bluewater sims in the sim bin or in houses in the main hood or a subhood before deleting Bluewater Village.
If you want to save their houses, just make sure there are no sims in the house when you move the house to a different subhood via the lots and houses bin.
You can either put all their stuff in inventory before you move the sim out, or use the moveoutobject stayer shrub (from simlogical I think.) before you move the sim out, if you want to avoid having to redecorate their old house.

It is not OK. You should check their memories and relations before moving them to a different 'hood. Even if they are EAxis families and you haven't played with them at all, they might already know people in their current 'hood which will create a few problems in your game. http://www.simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Moving_Sims

Use the cheat changelotzoning residential.
Psychosim
11th Nov 2010, 01:22 PM
Yes, use the cheat "changelotzoning residential/community". Save and exit to make the change take place.
Residential lots need a mailbox and trashcan, which can be bought with this mod: http://daydream.etowns.net/S2hacked.htm. Community lots need only a phone (maybe not even that if your sims are allowed to walk to other lots?), and it doesn't do harm if they have the mailbox and trashcan. So the easiest way if you're building a new lot is to start out with a residential (because many objects don't appear in community catalog) and then change it into community later.

whenever I choose the change lot cheat, I end up with a place my sims can buy, but never show up on. I can't play them, but I can click on the lot and move them back out. I hate that because there are a lot of community lots (like custom churches and things) that I downloaded with the intention of making them residential. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

If you change a lot from community to residential, you need a buyable mailbox (http://daydream.etowns.net/) and a trashcan. Be careful because the buyable mailbox can conflict with mods changing the bills.

You didn't read the posts carefully enough.
It is perfectly safe to move sims to a different subhood.
Moving them to a different MAIN hood is very bad, but this question was specifically about a business district subhood. Sims maintain all their relationships when moved to a different subhood if they are taken out of their house before moving.
Never ever move an occupied house into the houses and lots bin, even if just moving to a different subhood within the same main neighborhood.
I know because I do this all the time. And it is exactly the same thing as moving a sim from Uni back to their hood/subhood. Or vice versa. They maintain all their previous relationships.
Different subhoods is one way to make it much more tolerable to play some of the pre-made sims. I've never liked Bluewater Village or any of the lots/houses there. But I find some of those sims much more interesting to play than most of the main hood characters. Especially in Pleasantview where I really don't like playing the Pleasantview characters. But I just move the Bluewater Village sims out of their subhood to Pleasantview or to another subhood under the SAME MAIN neighborhood.

Even though my sims have enough friends required for a job promotion... my game, in some families, does not count them all.
It's frustrating because I work so hard to increase their friends number but it does no good. What's up with that? At first I thought it was because most of their friends are family members but that wasn't it.
aaries16
17th Nov 2010, 04:01 AM
I don't think the game counts family members as friends for promotions - so you will have to get non-family members as your friends. Also it doesn't count the same friend twice, so even though 2 people in your household are friends with the neighbor down the street it only counts as one friend for the list. Though it doesn't hurt for both to be friends since that can help the neighbor down the street get a promotion.

Zauber--If you don't mind having/using hacks or mods in your game, you could also try twojeff's "no friends needed for careers" mod, if the whole "required number of friends" thing drives you nuts.
http://www.simbology.com/smf/index.php?topic=15.0
I use it myself, especially for new custom hoods which (thanks to clean templates) may not always have the required number of people needed in the hood (especially if I'm doing a challenge or something).

Is it safe (or even possible) to have two Download folders, one being renamed to smth else so that the game doesn't recognize it and ignore, and other folder named Downloads which the game will use?
It's just that I have two themed neighbourhoods here and wish each of them to use separate CC to avoid long loading times and Buy/Build catalogs' overflow.

18th Nov 2010, 04:13 PM
You shouldn't leave the alternate/renamed Downloads folder inside The Sims 2 folder, but it is perfectly safe to swap two Downloads folders in and out of your user files depending upon which game you want to play. Simply stash the one not in use on your desktop or inside the EA Games folder (next to, not inside, The Sims 2 folder).
Amairani
18th Nov 2010, 04:48 PM
^^ Thank you, Mangaroo :) I was hoping it would be safe to leave the renamed folder there as it takes time to move more than 2GBs. I'm glad I asked before actually attempting to run a game with two Downloads folders. Thank you!
mangaroo
18th Nov 2010, 04:59 PM
I used to maintain separate accounts on my computer to run games with different cc requirements, now I simply rename my user files and generate a new game on the same account. So inside my EA Games folder, I have folders labeled The Sims 2 (current game), The Sims 2_megahood, and The Sims 2_war.
Of course, a full set of user files does take up more disk space than just swapping out the Downloads folder, but it requires no time at all to change the folder names.
Amairani
18th Nov 2010, 08:20 PM
I do the same, there are six games now inside my EA Games folder... Most games only have one 'hood in them, but one or two have two 'hoods and I was thinking if I can have them within one Sims2 folder and only rename the current Downloads folder I wish to use for chosen 'hood. Am I making sense? :D Anyways, thank you for clarifying it's no good to rename Downloads folders^^

My friend is convinced that when a sim gets to a very very low aspiration level that the option to commit suicide comes up. I told him that I've never seen that option ever and I've played longer than him, but I don't make my sims drastically depressed much either. Plus adding the option for suicide would have to raise the game's rating wouldn't it? Who's right?
P.S. Is there a mod/hack that does that? Because I swear that's the only way he could've come to this conclusion.
dostha
19th Nov 2010, 06:16 AM
No, it's not a game option. Knowledge Sims sometimes have "suicidal want", but it's not linked with bad mood. You can "commit suicide" via InSim, but it's not different than choosing death from Tombstone of L&D. I know Simwardrobe's guns have options to shoot the shooter, but I never tried this and I'm not sure it works.
AlexandraSpears

Knowledge Sims want what's basically a near-death experience...remember they want to know everything about everything.
If you don't mind doing this kind of thing, just lock them in a room with one of those fire-jets from Nightlife. Have a Popularity Sim bargain with the Grim Reaper, since defeating him is one of THEIR power Wants. Oh, and make sure their relationship is really high.

I hate it when my sims have a day off from work, the gardening is all done, and I want them to catch fish to make a bunch of group meals for their inventory. But the damn pond is frozen. Arggghhhh. I so hate that. And yesterday when I was playing, the pond stayed frozen for several days and I don't even have winter in my hood.
I just now realized that there is a weather thing in the aspiration rewards. I've never used it, but maybe that will get weather warm enough to thaw out the pond?
