View Full Version : How to convert The Sims 3 skin to The Sims 2? [Um... SOLVED I guess.]

Hi guys! The title is what I'm asking. There's no so much intro words to say so here's some of my theories and sub-questions about this... project, or what the heck it is:

:here: If this method requires having The Sims 3, then count me out. My local store has sold the game out, and there won't be another copy of the game until the middle of January 2012. Firetruck them! And I just got the right computer...

:here: If there's a The Sims 3 default (Maxis) skin uploaded for The Sims 3, where could it be?
If you don't get my point (and you probably don't :) ), fanseelamb made this download (http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=256203) -- she actually uploaded The Sims 2 default (Maxis) skin. -- So, if there's a stuff alike to fanseelamb's download, where could it be?
(Then, when I download the skin, I could use some of MTS' tutorials of 'How to make a new The Sims 3 skin'. From there, I'll extract the textures, and copy them on the The Sims 2's skin textures (from Bodyshop) and finally, convert The Sims 2 CC skin to The Sims 2 default replacement skin. Yeah. I'm not really sure if I'll succed at finding the file at all, and then succeding at exporting the textures. So -- maybe...)

:here: If someone made this work, where the heck is it? Definately not on MTS; I believe I searched the whole 'Skins' section, but there was nothing alike.

I will personally thank the person who reads this, 'cause it was a lot for me to say... and yeah, of course, I'll give a big cyber hug to anyone who has an idea of where to start! Thank you all in advance.

Yes, it will require Sims 3. I don't think anyone has uploaded the Sims 3 skin textures.

Doing Sims 3 skin for Sims 2 would, well... kinda suck. Thing is, with TS3, a lot more of the shadows and highlights are generated dynamically by the lighting in-game. So there's not a whole lot of variation on the skin itself - it's pretty plain. And the way the texture is applied to the skin is pretty different too - it would be a big job to convert one to the other, cutting it into little pieces and blending like mad. You could really get the same basic end result by taking the TS2 default skins and adding a layer on top in the same colour as the skin and setting it to 50% opacity - basically removing half the detail from the skin and making it partially bucket fill.

Additionally, there is only one light skin in TS3, and the dark skin is the same as the light, only green. Yeah. Green. Basically it's to counteract the additional redness added when darkening the skin. So you'd have to be able to convert from a light skin to all the dark tones too - and doing that is Freaking Hard because you lose a LOT of detail. That's why it's best to make your first skin (if you're doing a set of all four) as a medium tan, not light or dark.

Aaaand then there's the bump map and specular, which add a lot to the look, which are not really present in the same way in TS2.

It's just not going to be worth the effort - if you want to create more of an effect -like- the Sims 3 default skins, I'd say you'd be better off painting on a Sims 2 skin to recreate the look you want, without actually converting the textures.

BTW, fansee is a she, and afaik doesn't even have TS3 so asking her would not be the way to go. ;)

As I promised, a big thank you goes to HystericalParoxysm! So, it's pretty plain? Wow. I never realised that. Or I did?...

Couple days ago I was just 'passing by' MTS to see what's up new and then (and I the hell don't know how) I wandered into MTS' tutorials - The Sims 3 - CAS!, how to make skintone (probably that's why I came up there) and bodyshapes. And I never realised that skin could be just plain... um, skin-color colored - and muscles and everything were just a SHAPE ! Oh My God. And yeah - I actually kinda knew it would suck 'cause even in TS3 intro that guy in the gym doesn't even have nipples! (I was like... double u t f ?)

As I said above, I can't go further (even if I want) -- because I need to have The Sims 3 then. And, it sounds a LOT of job to do (I thought it was just copy-paste textures to the *.bmp-s wich came out from TS2 Bodyshop :wtf: ) -- wich I don't have time and will to do. Again, thanks for all that information, HP!

PS Thanks for letting me know fanseelamb was a she. And about the thing that I would request him (oops, her :) ) to do the skins for TS3 - I already read that she doesn't take requests, but I was too lazy to edit my post. ;)
