View Full Version : How do I create a mod?

I have never created or commented on a thread before so please excuse me if it is in the wrong place.
Specifically how would I make a mod that increases or nullifies the family size limit of 8 on the Sims 3, because it hasn't been done, Awesomemod doesn't work for me and I don't know where to start.
Could you tell me:
What type of mod would this be (global, core etc.)
What software would I need?
What mistakes do I need to watch out for?
Tips, tricks, suggestions and pointers.
Anything you think is relevant.
And please be nice to me and my noobish ways :)

The best place to start is to read some of the modding tutorials on the Wiki :)

I'm quite sure there are other mods that increase the family size and are not Awesomemod; asking where to find those in the Where Can I Find forum (under the Help menu) - or rather, searching that forum as I'm quite certain this has been asked there before - would be worlds easier than creating your own mod. :)

Portrait Panel by twallan allows more then 8 Sims. It's a scripting mod, so it should work for you.

Actually, it is NRaas MasterController that removes the limits on the active household. PortraitPanel is what allows you to display more than the maximum number of potraits. There are a few different mods that affect household size, so I recommend you read this: I want to play a Household with more than 8 sims in it. (http://nraas.wikispaces.com/Which+Mod+FAQ#Which Mod?-I want to play a household with more than eight sims in it.)
However, I think it's a great idea to learb to mod, so I agree with Inge. Take a look at the wiki :) (Hint: Click on the Create button on the menu up to and place your cursor over Sims 3)

Oh, one should certainly learn to mod if they want to, but no sense in doing something that's already been done, unless you want to look at how it was done to learn from to do something different. The OP said "because it hasn't been done, Awesomemod doesn't work for me, and I don't know where to start" and not "because I'd find it an interesting challenge" - I love to mod my game, but I still find it a pain in the ass to make something and then realize it's already out there somewhere. Why reinvent the wheel when you can spend your time, um... inventing... jetpacks? Okay that analogy fell apart a little bit.

I definitely agree! Sorry, I didn't mean to imply anything otherwise. That's why I linked to the NRaas FAQ, so the OP could go take a look. I just didn't want to discourage anyone either.
When something in the game starts to bother me, I also go check if someone else has done it already, even if it's a simple "no autonomous mod" Why go through the effort if I can just download and unzip into my mods folder? ;)
