Chapter 17


Ashlyn seemed to have lost all control as she fell awkwardly to her knees, face saturated with an unsightly mixture of dirt and murky tears.

Such a frail creature she appeared to be as her body began to weaken steadfastly under the dense clouds of oppression that constantly loomed overhead.

Not a single response could develop from Katie’s pursed lips.

Not knowing what to think, she just stood there, helplessly rooted in the doorway gaping wide-eyed in shock. Never before had she ever witnessed her best friend become so perceptibly unglued.

Characteristically, Katie possessed two very different sides to her personality- one being callous and vindictive while the other compassionate and gentle natured.

The ladder somehow steadily being invoked while she watched as her friend sobbed on hands and knees in the weather.

Her eyes shifted to the several strands of blood being drawn from Ashlyn’s scuffed palms merging gracefully with the flowing water in which she remained.

“Of course you can stay with me, sweetie.” The empathetic tone in her voice was genuine as she knelt down, assisting her friend to an upright position, “Come on, let’s get you out of the rain.”

The next half hour was spent as Ashlyn tearfully divulged the events of the previous hours leading up to her rather unplanned escape route, or at least she pretended to tell everything.

There was absolutely no need for Katie to know about Adam, no need to even continue thinking about him for that matter.

Anyone so willing to just up and leave deserves no lament for absence. But on the other hand, maybe she was jumping to conclusions; after all, did she really know what had truly happened?

“I-I just can’t believe it- your mom’s really…gone.” Katie held a hand to cover her mouth as a single tear softly caressed down her cheek.

A large welt took shape in Ashlyn’s throat the second those words made their way through her ears.

Even the most meager of thoughts pertaining to Heather seemed to form as a blunt knife which forcefully penetrated her skin, perpetually carving vigorously at her raw, delicate heart.

Seemingly out of nowhere she developed this idea, a delightfully futile notion to avoid the agony of grieving.

If she forced reality enough, she could actually trick her own mind into believing the whole situation never occurred in the first place- a temporary fix to halt the pain that slashes away at her spirit.

Sensing her friend’s distress, Katie leaned over and gently wrapped an arm around her.

There were no words of any language that she could say, nor was there anything she could possibly do to ease that kind of pain, except to simply be there for her.

Late into the night as the girls slept, a conflict was beginning to stir Ashlyn’s peaceful rest.

Her eyes opened to reveal a scene much similar as the one before she had gone to sleep that night.

Red eyelids gently scraped her unusually dry eyes as she blinked. It wasn’t so atypical to stir in the night, but there was a strange presence in the room so haunting that it sent shivers up her spine.

At that moment she could make out a subtle voice calling in the distance, its words indiscernible.
She sat up to listen intently as it was becoming gradually clearer, peering desperately into the night only to view nothing but darkness.

“Ashlyn.” The voice gently beckoned through the pitch black, eerie and sing-song in tone.

“Ashlyn.”

Steadily all perception was being lured away as she began to fall helplessly into a trance while the hypnotic voice continued to call out her name.

But that voice was familiar, yet it was somehow strangely different from the one she had come to hold so dear.

“Mom?”She called out nervously, her eyes darting to every corner of the room.

“How could you do this to me Ashlyn?”

“Wha-what…do you mean?”

“Where were you? How could you just leave me to die?”

Ashlyn cradled her head in her hands, “I didn’t know! I-I’m sorry! I’m so sorry, please!”

The voice had ceased.

She sunk back into the bed at the sudden realization of silence, her tear stained eyes shifted about the room crazily in an attempt to make some kind of sense as to what had just happened.

Her attention however was adverted to the tiny ticking sensation on her left cheek.

A troubling sense came over her as she noticed the collected water raising rapidly, its waves swaying together in a tantalizing rhythmic fashion.

Ashlyn was abruptly awoken to the booming thumps of her own heart. Her breathing shallow, yet deep and the pillow soaking with sweat. She incoherently clawed to the edge of the bed, still somewhat stuck in that state between dreams and reality.

The sun emanated brightly through the windows, illuminating the room to such an extent making it painfully difficult to distinguish the numbers on the clock.

Sigh

Friday morning and she had somehow slept through class, not that she was willing to return to that forsaken hell hole just to be mindlessly tormented by Shelby and whatever so-called friends that girl would influence along the way.

In fact, she was more than relieved to discover that Katie had left without her.

“I can’t believe it! You just woke up?!” Katie blurted out as she clumsily flung the bedroom door open, backpack in hand.

Ashlyn groggily scratched through the scattered stands of hair that stuck to the skin of her face, “Uh…yeah. I had this… weird dream but I can’t really remember what happened-“

“It doesn’t matter,” her friend interrupted with haste, “we need to talk.”

Katie was still breathless from climbing the staircase, but it was the gleam her eyes possessed which clearly projected a concern.

“Okay, what’s up?” The girl inquired, trying to read her friend’s crystal-like blue eyes.

“Do you… know what they’re saying about you, at school?”

Ashlyn furrowed her brow anxiously as she mentally noted the stressed tone of voice, “No…what?”

Katie dropped her gaze before letting out a sigh through clenched teeth, “Ash, were you…sleeping with our math teacher?”

Her features went limp in astonishment, this couldn’t be actually be happening.

“What?!” She finally managed to breathe out after a delayed process of words.

“Well…it isn’t true is it?” Katie warily verified with outstretched open palms.

“No-no of course it’s not!” she felt her insides twist up and constrict, “We hung out like once- oh…oh my God!”

“You do know that he’s gone, right? They say Roth got rid of him on the spot…”

“Yes-yes I know. I…I just can’t believe - wait-what?!”Ashlyn was completely beside herself, how was she supposed to deal with this?

Katie remained rooted in the same position, idly biting the tip of a fingernail all while feeling slightly taken aback. “I just don’t understand why you didn’t tell me any of this, I mean-I’m supposed your best friend-“


“I’m sorry! Okay? What else do you want me to say?!” The poor girl was still in the process of trying to grasp the reality at hand; she certainly did not need a speech on friendship- from all people.

A bewildered Katie took a step back defensively, “All I’m saying is that it would’ve been nice not to find out that my closest friend is f***ing the teacher from the girls behind me in third period!”

“I told you- I did not sleep with him Katie!” Ashlyn spat harshly, it was at that moment she felt all the hurt, the pain, the anxiety and frustration that she had been stuffing in the back of her mind begin to pulsate with bitterness.

It was as if she was experiencing every emotion known to mankind at once, and just seconds away from eruption.

Katie drew a deep breath and made sure to keep her tone cool and calm, “Ash, c’mon stop being so selfish…I’m trying to help you, I’m letting you stay here and this is how you repay me, by lying?”

“Wait-I’M the one being selfish?!” her eyes narrowed tightly and her tone was sharp, it was first time in a long time, if ever, that she was actually releasing, “Do you realize what I’ve been through?! My mother is gone and I don’t even know what happened because I took off.”

“Well, I-“ Katie attempted to interrupt.

“Now they’re telling me I have to live with a man who abandoned me before I was even born…an-and on top of that the only person that I’ve ever truly cared about is now gone as well, so tell me ‘friend’, do you know what any of that is like?! I’d like to see you walk just one day in my shoes, but until then don’t you dare lecture me Katie, got it?!”

Ashlyn quickly took a step back as soon as the words which she had just spoken registered; all she could do was hover a hand over her mouth in disbelief.

Never before had she gone off speaking her mind like that, especially to her friend.

Katie was just as surprised by the reaction; she didn’t even think she had it in her.

While a large part of her was greatly offended, a tiny part was actually proud of the way her friend took a stand. She was however, in no way oblivious to that fact that she regularly crossed the line, and for that felt remorse.

“You’re right Ash,” she spoke softly, “I shouldn’t have brought it that far-I believe you….and… I’m sorry. Forgive me?”

Ashlyn couldn’t resist the puppy dog eyes that Katie threw her and with that the two friends embraced each other tightly.

Truth be told, Ashlyn’s mind was hardly on the situation with Katie for she couldn’t direct her thoughts off of Adam.

She wondered if the rumors were true, just the thought of him getting fired over her nagged repetitively at her conscience. Even so, she missed him terribly; it felt as if a large piece of her had been ripped away.

As the somber reality would have it, there was just no bringing her mother back, no matter how badly she wanted it, but the possibility for happiness was still out there, she just needed to find him.

Tough situation with Adam... It isn't OK for teachers to even kiss students, especially in the classroom, but I DO love Adam and Ashlyn together. Bad choice made by good people. Can't wait to see what happens!

I am soooo sorry guys!! I had originally planned to update this last week!
But things just weren't falling into place easily and I was getting inspiration for paintings, prints-everything else I do except this story!!! GAH!! :smash:

I kept being unsatisfied with it and I don't like to update until I feel it's the best I can do... I'm still a little unsure though, but I didn't want to keep you guys waiting longer :)

Anyways, think of this as two chapters in one, because it is super long!
I didn't want to get anyone excited, but its also one of the biggest chapters of the whole story...well I guess you know now! hehe :D

~ "The Beginning of the End" ~



The next morning announced itself in a cheerful blur of luminosity with the shadows of the night long since faded into the passing movements of time.

“Oh my God!” Katie squealed with such excitement that her pitch was like a hammer to Ashlyn’s skull.

She continued to murmur inaudibly in that same obnoxious elevated tone as she pranced to the bathroom.

Ashlyn slid her fingers around the nape of her neck still a little dazed from barely sleeping the night before.

Her thoughts had been abnormally unmanageable, spinning and swirling with the possibilities that held her future tightly- with such impending uncertainty it wasn’t much of a wonder why one would be kept from rest.

“Oh and Ash…?” Katie’s voice echoed from the bathroom as she applied a thick gob of mascara to her lashes.

Each word was now becoming progressively clearer as she yawned passively.

“I told Mike about what happened…but he still wants to have the party tonight.” She poked her head through the doorway and threw Ashlyn a somber look, “But you can stay up here if you want, although it might be good for you to take a break from your problems for once.”

Ashlyn knew exactly what she was so casually referring to, and for a brief moment the idea lingered in her mind as she took it into consideration.

The girl’s concentration was thwarted by the sharp clapping of heels descending the staircase and it was then that her eyes widened as she came to a stirring realization.

“Hey baby.” Katie’s voice carried quietly from foyer.

“Katie!” Ashlyn impatiently hopped off the bed and scurried to the top of the stairs, her feet sliding across the polished floor boards, “Can I borrow your car today?”

“Sure, keys are on the computer desk, see ya later.” Katie nonchalantly bellowed as she was escorted out into the thick, humid air.

Her heart palpitated with anticipation as she tore through her friend’s armoire.
How could she have possibly forgotten?

It was so simple, perfect even- this wonderful scheme which she had so cleverly conjured the previous day and had since been eagerly counting the seconds until the moment when she could act upon it.

A quick brush to the hair, some light makeup and the girl was off- skidding recklessly out the front door followed by a wild dash for the vehicle parked conveniently parallel to the entrance gate.

The destination impressed in her mind as she sunk into the warm fabric of the car seat, squinting helplessly in the sun’s glare.
The ocean was but an hour drive from Katie’s, a small price to pay indeed for if this Saturday was like any other, Adam would surely be there.

Maybe this was one wrong she could make right… either way she needed to see him, if only to express deep remorse for all the complications that had come from knowing her.

Every word, step and thought was already carefully set into place and after all would be said and done she would then depart from his life forever, just as broken and meek as he had found her.

A gentle sigh passed through soft lips as Ashlyn reflected on the last few weeks, how stupid she was for even thinking anything could possibly develop further. There is one thing this girl had finally learned and that was coming to know who she was while accepting the person she would forever remain.

With intentions clearly molded, she lightly pressed the gas pedal and set off for her hopeful objective.

When Ashlyn finally got there she immediately started for a small group of people that were gathered near the water’s edge, her heels sunk rapidly in the tiny grains of sand as she attempted to swallow her anxieties.

The mild scent of salt lingered aimlessly in the air, warm breezes softly caressed her features while the gentle sound of crashing waves kissed soothingly at her ears; the overall sense was intoxicating at best.

Upon spotting the clearly misplaced teenager, one man separated from the others and casually began sauntering toward her. He was fairly young, not appearing much older than twenty- five, with eyes that were sapphire in pigment and chestnut colored hair that tousled in the wind while he stepped.

“Hey pretty lady, what can I do for ya?”

“Uhm…hi,” she appeared somewhat shy as her eyes wandered to the shimmering waves off in the distance, “…sorry-I’m looking for someone. Do you know a guy named Adam- tall, blond hair?”

The man standing to her front began to roll his eyes as he chuckled mildly, “Yeah, I think everyone here knows him.”

“Oh.” Was the girl’s simple retort, feeling rather embarrassed, “well is he here…right now?”

“No…” he began with a cool sigh while crossing arms, thoughtfully lifting his gaze to the clouds, “Come to think of it I haven’t seen him all week…we were all supposed to meet somewhere last night, but he never showed…doesn’t have a cell either, go figure.”

Ashlyn released a disheartened sigh, it seemed as though there wasn’t anything she couldn’t fail at, “Alright, thanks.”

Just as she turned to walk away her ears immediately caught sound of a winded tone from behind, “Wait…”

She turned to see the kind man sprinting toward her, nearly toppling from a strong gust of wind, “I do have a number…cell’s in the car, c’mon.”

He then proceeded to lead her through the parking lot when, after successfully searching the flip phone, began scribbling a series of muddled numbers onto a small piece of napkin which had been removed from the floor of the car.

The young girl’s countenance seemed to brighten considerably as he handed her the tattered bit.
Sure enough there it was, right next to the McDonald’s logo, her eyes glistened as she stood attentively examining the ink stains.

“You should know that he’s only there during the week, so you won’t be able to reach him right away…”

A faint smile began to spread as she nodded in appreciation, so the excitement was halted temporarily, even still there wasn’t a single uncertainty for the future accomplishment present in her mind.

By the time Ashlyn retreated to the car she was mentally clinging to the anticipation of what Monday’s light would bring, along with the hope that even a small fraction of her heart would be at peace once again.

What the girl didn’t notice however, was the small white convertible pulling into the parking lot just as she was exiting.

On the way back to Katie’s an unexpected detour hampered the usual route.
The brightness was stolen from her eyes when she realized what road she had been directed to.

There, set before her was the last place she saw her mother alive, holding the final shred of serenity she had once felt which now seemed but such a distant memory. Her heart stopped short as the walls of her throat contracted severely, nearly preventing airflow.

The vehicle stood still in the middle of the street, all the poor girl could do at that moment was gape through the window at the large awkwardly placed ‘For Sale” sign abhorrently rooted in the dirt.

The lawn once alive with rich shades of jade now seemed sparse and decayed. Large black trash bags decorated the driveway where she used to play as a child and the windows were shrouded with ply wood and soiled linens.

The landlord had obviously decided to sell upon hearing of Heather’s death, not willing to be associated with such a taboo.

As memories flashed through her mind, she wanted nothing more than to burst into tears for her soul deeply longed for the comfort of her bed, the scent of her room and the soothing touch of normality… but all was gone, shattered into oblivion never to be known again.

But what would her mother expect of her? After all she couldn’t stay with Katie forever and it was then that she reluctantly came to a decision- a choice that would make or break her. Immediately after the weekend comes to a close she would return to the very place from which she had been fleeing all along.

Shorty thereafter, the tiny home softly faded in the distance behind, along with the very person she had come to be.

When the Mustang finally pulled up in front of the large house, vibrations of booming music could be felt resonating from the first floor.

The entrance gave way to a dim, candle lit living room crowded with strangers.

Her presence didn’t go unseen for long, as within a few short minutes Katie was spotted stumbling awkwardly in her direction, but little did she know that her friend wasn’t the only one eying her company.

Chaz stood, gracelessly slumped against a counter on the far end of the kitchen. His eyes tightened to slits as they intently studied Ashlyn’s every movement- the curvatures of her body, her magnetizing smile, and sparkling eyes of emerald to perfectly match her radiating persona.

He had possessed a profound, unquenchable lust for her from the very first moment she came into vision. Unrelenting rage quickly replaced infatuation as he silently recalled her rejection and uncontrollable jealousy brewed in the depths of his soul- he was going to have her whether she was compliant or not.

“Assshhhhh!” Katie garbled in foolish laughter, grabbing her friends hand to steady herself, “you godda to t-try this stuff, its soooo trippy!”

Ashlyn could only form unenthused smirk at that point, “Did you really just say ‘trippy’?”

Katie’s gaze became distorted and confused as she tilted her head, wrinkling the bridge of her nose, “Wha…aaa…?”

Just as she finished pouring the drink she felt a hand tightly wrap itself around her arm.

The opportunity had manifested, it was too ideal to pass up.
With his mentality completely saturated with wickedness, Chaz proceeded to reach into his front pocket, carefully removing a small vial.

The boy swiftly emptied its contents into the glass before tactfully blending into the crowd. The liquid bubbled wildly as it mixed with the powder, silently beckoning its victim.

Within about five minutes of taking her first sip, Ashlyn’s vision began to blur considerably while sweat began to drip abundantly from her brow.

She gazed blankly toward the large gathering off to her right, the mixture of sweaty bodies swaying hypnotically in rhythm as they unconsciously intermingled with one another.

Surrounding images began to shift rapidly in her glass-like eyes; her muscles began to weaken increasingly while her limbs trembled at steady pace.

It was then at her weakest point of confusion that she sensed warm yet tranquil breath on her ear, “Come with me.” It whispered enchantingly in an almost mesmerizing fashion, she couldn’t help but obey the request as she was quickly taken by the hand like a child and quietly led upstairs.

The music and voices progressively faded into blurs of nothingness until the only thing she could properly sense was a heartbeat thumping loudly in her ears.

The girl’s skin felt detached and cold while her stance became unstable, it was as if her spirit separated from her body and was now looking down from somewhere above.

Soon, soft linens enveloped her limp body as unfamiliar lips gently kissed up the right side of her neck, a sensation which sent pin pricks up her spine.

The whole room distorted itself in a cloudy haze, barely defining the figure hovering over. She could sense the stranger breathing in the sweet fragrance of her hair and she gradually began losing consciousness, her finger tips becoming numb as the pigment drained from delicate fair skin.

Her stomach continued churning nauseatingly sending an uncomfortable sense of vomit rising in her throat.

The young girl, becoming increasingly disoriented, groaned inaudibly as she rolled onto the floorboards before staggering pathetically through a glass framed door off to the side.

The cool night air danced about her moist flesh while her eyelids fluttered in an effort to stay alert.

As she stood alone atop the balcony, evenly inhaling the mist of the night while gradually regaining a sense of awareness, the prior few minutes slowly began to replay in her mind.

As if flashing from a film projector, frames of images now clearly revealed a scene which made her soul flinch. Up until that moment she had been totally oblivious to the reality that she had just been seconds from surrendering her virginity to the one person who deemed her less than human.

Light footsteps began discreetly approaching from behind invoking a small creak just as a palm was emotively placed on the small of her back.

No, he was not going to be rejected a second time and with that he ignored her pleas by forcing his mouth onto hers while his hands began groping her harshly.

Ashlyn let out a docile whimper as she shoved his body from hers, openly refusing his sadistic advances.

“What the f*** is wrong with you?! You’ve got some serious issues b**ch, you’re nothing but a f***ing basket case!” he barked viciously in her face, frantically flailing his arms through the air.

Without a second thought his reflexes got the best of him as he violently thrust both hands to her chest, putting every bit of strength behind the impact.
By the time Chaz had come to the full realization of what he had just committed it was two seconds too late.

Katie’s desperate screams of horror carried for nearly a block, her heels flung large clumps of dirt skyward as they tore wildly across the lawn.


The delayed arrival of one particular guest brought only the host’s attention to the gory scene, not willing to instill unnecessary panic in those whose senses were already significantly altered.

Repetitive whimpers were the only sounds to emerge from Katie’s trembling lips as she faltered to the ground attempting to assess the daunting situation through hazy vision.

Was she experiencing a bad high? It was quite plausible; however, that what she had taken earlier in the night could have been unknowingly laced, fooling her eyes into believing this horrifying nightmare.

No, hallucination was out of the question for what her vision interpreted was none other than a very disturbing reality.

“…Ash?” she whispered under a vapor of unstable breath. Once perfectly bright azure eyes were now rid with countless strands of scarlet as they welled, her heart skipped beats regularly to keep in union with her rapidly deflating lungs.

The sight of her best friend’s immobile body, lying helplessly in a shallow puddle of thick tepid blood sent painful jabs to her heart.

“Oh, f*** no!”

Katie lifted her heavy head in response to her boyfriend’s sharp, disgruntled tone booming from behind.

“What the hell is this, Kate?!” His eyes could cut through glass as he stood one hand firmly placed on a hip, the other held out as to demand an offering.

Her lower lip quivered recklessly while gazing vacantly at Mike’s distorted image, “W-we need-d-d…-just spit out the words dammit- we n-eed to get he-lp…”

“Are you out of your friggin skull?! Kate, listen to me-“ he began, thrusting an index finder toward the house, “everything that we have in there is enough to put us all away for the rest of our lives and then some! Now if you want to wait ‘til my buddies and I leave, then hey-that’s your call, but I’m just not willing to risk it…not for her.”

As insensitive as those words may have been, he was right. Even in the midst of her stupor she knew that even the arrival of an ambulance would be accompanied by a police squad, ultimately forcing them to pay disreputable consequences.

“Well…what do we do?” the girl murmured innocently as her focus once again shifted to Mike, her knees still forming small circular intents in the moist peat.

“Wait…” He held his hand up for a brief moment as his eyes swiftly spotted the cobalt vehicle parked near the street, “I know what we’re going to do.”

Such a simple reply for a difficult situation, this sent mild pin pricks to the back of Katie’s neck while disquiet grew for being as it may, Mike was seldom known for taking the high road in life.

As the couple ever so subtly loaded a barely breathing body into the sports car, the party inside continued to rage on- all were completely oblivious to the knowledge of the evening’s horrid occurrences … all except one.

Earlier at the height of the chaos, Chaz had managed to seamlessly slip out the front door without even a single eye to waver in his direction, everyone had been too inattentive while getting high and intoxicated to notice Ashlyn’s disappearance.


Meanwhile, not more than four blocks away, a young man slowly takes a step through an entrance that never fails to give way to an ever present ominous atmosphere.

It is a house but not a refuge, seemingly serving as a mere cage for lab rats who patiently await sadistic vivisections.

Its cheerful décor successfully masks its history of unbridled hatred and misery. The air itself even seems trapped as it is dense and unmoving.

The deep voice of a seductress attempted to interrupt the well composed treading of rubber soles in the process of ascending a staircase.

He stopped but refused to turn as the woman’s drunken tone sloppily recalled something about his father departing early that day eventually resulting in her being rather ‘lonely’.

Not allowing a single breath to escape he continued for his bedroom, scoffing harshly through strained lips.
Filthy wh*res, they come in by the droves week after week to leach off of the family’s wealth.

It has been nearly a year since Chaz had last seen his mother; everything seemed so routine and ordinary when she left for work on that Wednesday morning last spring, but something had to be off because she was never heard from since.

Nothing was ever found to give an indication as to what happened to her and, oddly enough, no one seemed to care…especially her husband.

Once properly contained within the confines of the room, every limb became flaccid as his body willfully dropped to the clean, hardwood floor like a rag doll.

An invisible dark veil of shame still shrouded his being; there was no fleeing its rigid grip as it worked to steadily squeeze his throat shut, cutting off all circulation.

The guilt ridden teenager coiled himself tightly into a corner, it was then that seemingly over a thousand condemning whispers of various tongues began swarming violently through the air, sneering and spitting at his ears… but alas, the mind plays depraved tricks when in such a distressed state.

Pale blue irises are blank as they stare into a void of nothingness; all color has desaturated and the temperature is unusually low.

There were no words or thoughts present at that moment, only repeated images of Ashlyn’s pain seared eyes as she diminishes into the night.

Mental anguish grew heavier as a burden while incessant thoughts pointing fingers of blame slithered rampantly through every crevice and corner of his mind.

Her blood saturated his palms; her tears flooded his veins- he had maliciously extinguished the life from the only one he had ever loved. But had he truly loved her by definition?

Chaz then trust a pillow to his head, burying a dirty face into the stiff cotton fibers. A desperate scream wishes to be released but no sound is heard except stifled shallow breathing.

Somewhere along the line he had wavered into the very pathway of which he despised; becoming a creature so callously manipulative and mercilessly vindictive.
It was then that he had regrettably come to the realization that he was, in fact, his father’s son.

If there was ever one thing to impress a soul so deeply was the intensity fueling the determination that he simply could not allow that to continue happening. It had never before occurred to him that he so eagerly willed not one more of his abhorred father’s genes to be passed on.

The cold, disheartening silenced scratched irritatingly at his skin as his thoughts idly toyed in macabre.

Not more than one minute had passed before Chaz had stumbled to his feet, scampering wildly to the computer desk. His trembling fingers clawed through the drawer in a panicked state until he happened upon the one thing he never thought he’d use.

His stance had stiffened to that of a mannequin while widened pupils gaped attentively at his own reflection in the fresh, gleaming blade of the hunting knife.

For once he could say he was sorry…he would no longer be capable of causing pain to others… he would pay for his sins and put an end to the monster within.

Chaz squeezed his tearful eyes shut and pressed the blade to bare flesh…he would not scream nor flinch for reaping punishment is rarely undeserved.

What the boy had failed to realize, however, was that his mental state had been greatly clouded, his judgment irrational…and perhaps most troubling of all…the simple fact that he was indeed, his own worst enemy.
