CAW Textures Megapack
This pack contains 43 extracted seamless textures (from both the base game as well as WA), plus a snow texture created by me. Some of these textures are unused in the game, so they're basically new. I will also be converting the new textures to terrain paints soon so you can use them in-game as well.
Anyway, no more ugly shale mountains!

Installation Instructions:
Put the files in Documents > Electronic Arts > Create-A-World Tool > UserToolData > SourceTextures.
In CAW's terrain tab: Terrain Painting Tools > Add Layer > select new file > select appropriate sound > done!

Thread stuck - these are awesome! Martine, would you mind if I added a few textures of my own that I've made to this thread? All based on Maxis textures, just recoloured to match some of the stuff like beach rock.

Okay, here's a few I've made for my own use in my world in progress. Maybe they'll be useful for you guys. The set is made around the colours in the beach rocks you can place in your world - dark, medium, and light grey with a touch of warmer tones.
Three colours of stone, to match the different shades in the beach rock: Dark, medium, and light.
Two colours of dirt, somewhat darker and desaturated from the game's originals: Dark and light.
Two colours of grass, also somewhat darker and desaturated: Dark and detail - the detail version has an alpha.
One colour of sand: darker and made to match more closely the colours of the beach rock.
EDIT: Added all of these as terrain paints you can use on your lots too, so if you use these in CAW you can paint areas of your lots to match. Thanks to Inge and Peter for S3OC/S3PE.
All are clearly named. Use and abuse freely, for whatever, however, I don't care.

Not a dumb question at all, I haven't tried this yet but I don't think they'll be included. Can someone confirm this?
Thank you SO much, these are wonderful! Just one quick thing, the default file path for Create-A-World is Program Files/Electronic Arts/etc, not Documents.
Well actually there's two SourceTextures folders, one in My Docs and one in Program Files. I don't think it matters much where you put them, I have them in My Docs and they work just fine.
Srikandi
8th Jan 2010, 10:02 PM
Hrm. I've been assuming that custom textures WILL be included in the upload (that is, they'll be visible in the world, not available for players to use as terrain paints). I don't know how else you'd provide the textures to users, since I don't believe they're the same as terrain paint (the image can be the same, but specifying something as a custom texture in CAW doesn't make a corresponding Build Mode terrain paint... does it?).
HystericalParoxysm
9th Jan 2010, 11:52 AM
I do believe they will be included, especially since that kiwi_tea person (hi kiwi!) has shared his neighborhood in progress and I don't recall anyone wailing about it not looking right.
They do NOT automatically create an associated build mode terrain paint though. That you have to do in S3OC but it is -super easy and quick to do-. Like, no real tutorial needed, just use your brain. That's what I did to make the matching in-game terrain paints.
Those paints probably -won't- be included in the sims3pack though, since they're .package files, but easy enough to just include any necessary .package format content separately.

I'm having an issue with the WA Grass Low texture... It was working fine until I applied HP's Dark Beachrock on the hill tops. It looks as it should in CAW but when in EIG mode it gets very beige. Looks good when zoomed out but not zoomed in.
I didn't have this problem before i put the rock texture on top, but the rock still shows, it's just the grass that turned beige. Anyone knows why/has encountered this problem?

Hi, I have a question about medium grass texture in the grass pack. When I paint the terrain in caw, it looks great, but when I go into edit-in-game, and edit a lot, it appears to be solid brown. Any ideas why?
thanks

Hi, I have a question about medium grass texture in the grass pack. When I paint the terrain in caw, it looks great, but when I go into edit-in-game, and edit a lot, it appears to be solid brown.
I ran into this problem (same, I believe, as harksar - above - as well), but when using my own textures rather than Martine's, and I think I may have solved the problem. The three times I had it happen, I was using a custom texture for the base layer. Everything looked OK in CAW, but went horrible in EiG with the "solid brown" result reported above.
What seemed to work for me was to use a standard EA/CAW texture for the base layer, then paint it out almost completely with the custom texture I actually wanted as the base layer (I left a bit of EA grass at the bottom of the ocean, just in case some needed to be in use). Then I was able to successfully overlay further custom textures with no further problems.
I've no idea why this worked, or if it'll work for anyone else, but I've had no further problems since adopting this method.
Hope this helps! :)

22nd Jan 2010, 12:32 PM
jagerjmr: Your method worked great for me. I just painted a small patch of the standard grass in a hidden corner and now everything looks as it should in EIG!

harkskar - I think I've had that issue before, and I believe I've also solved it the way jagerjmr did, hope it works ok for you now!
Onewingedangel - Nope, these aren't terrain paints so you can't use them on residential lots. CAW is the Create-A-World too, here's the link (http://www.thesims3.com/game/tools/world).

I ask you to excuse my n00bness but I've never actually used S3oc or PE before, just looked around in it to go 'ooh :| '... so I can't figure out how to make the CAW texture I just tweaked availiable as terrain paint (it doesn't even show up in CAW, the area surrounding the lot just looks solid brown :(
I can create a texture allright, but how do I get the game to recognise the texture in EIG? :wtf:
ok I think it might be because I have no clue how to set the options when saving the .dds
Can anyone tell me what they are? Like do I need an alpha and should I convert to 16bit?
water_cat1
13th Feb 2010, 10:18 PM
i created my textures with paint.net. very simple to do, you can save in .dds and CaW recognises it.
after you select the name and the format another window pops up, if you want to make a texture that is small in size but still looks good and an have alpha channels then select DXT5 and tick the 'generate mip maps' box, the rest of that box i am not sure what they do and have not noticed any difference in the image.

thanks, I figured it out though, don't know what happened but the textures did show up after a save or two...
Now what happens is that whenevr I try to save a .TGA file (even without modifying it!), photoshop wonks it up completely. I don't know why so I gave up on that. I thought it might be a help in making the corner sidewalk tile dissapear but it's probably not...

Whatever you use to unarchive zip will unarchive rar. If for some really bizarre reason they don't, then get either 7zip or winrar, both are free and both handle rar and zip files.

Bakafox is working on a volcanic island and, due to issues with the Gimp plugin, was unable to make black sand personally. I gave it a shot using both the WA Sand Dark and the WA Sand Drifts. After checking with Martine, I am uploading here for anyone else who may have use for black sand. Bakafox did use in CAW and these worked.

Hope you don't mind me posting this here, please let me know if there's a more appropriate place.
I'm working on a little small mountain town and wanted a smaller, more faded dirt path that could be used as a little track up a mountain so I made a modified opacity.dds file (You can change it from dirt to any other pattern you have). Here's what I came up with, hope it's useful to somebody else. :)

You don't need to open these files, just save them without opening. The game can read them just file.

Deeney if you want a free program to play with DDS files then try Paint.Net v3.5.6 from here (http://www.getpaint.net/)
Just make sure when you save as DDS your files are DXT3 (explicit alpha) and make sure you have the Generate mip maps option checked when saving them so that they are in the correct format for SIMS3 and accept the option to "flatten" when the save process completes.

They don't automatically load into each world you open in CAW, you have to load each texture one by one so that you only have as many textures assigned to a world as you want to use. Which is good for those of us with a rather large texture collection.
So, I guess an expanded version of the 'where and how':
The textures go into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 Create a World Tool > User Tool Data > Source Textures
Start in CAW, and the Terrain tab, and the Paint sub-tab. There's a button called 'add layer'. Click that, and then to browse for the texture you want to use, hit the box with the [...] next to the text field marked "Texture". Point it to the right folders, and the texture you want to add. Tell it what sound effect you want that texture to have, and then hit OK. That texture will be added to the list of textures available to use in the world you have open. Repeat this for as many of the textures as you want to use on that world.
Hope that makes things a little more clear.

Okay so i have no idea how to work this site because im new and i keep getting confused.! But I came here curious on how to get the turquoise water. Thats really what i want to put in my CaW world. If you could tell me instructions that a not really intellgent-simmer could understand on how to get it, I would owe you soo much!! Please and thank you!

I have already painted my world pretty much completely, but now I like the grass from showtime much better that the default green. Is there a way to change only the base green with the new grass without ruining the other textures, and if yes is this then set for anyone who will download the world?

Yes, use the underwater sand texture to have the sea look turquoise. This will only work where the water is shallow though; if you want to make the deep water colour different then you will have to use colour ramps and ini files to change that; see this thread:
http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=459198
Or you could create an override by editing the basegame files:

Thank you, that's great news. Can you also tell me where I can find the Showtime grass texture? Has anyone already extracted ist or how do I get it myself?

The package files are in-game terrain paints to match the DDS textures. It is the DDS files that you use in CAW.
The first file contains the DDS files, the second the package files.

Just to say thank you for these, I've been using them a lot and they are perfect! I could not imagine loading CAW without them.

Thank you for these, but I can't seem to find the "Dark Dirt" that came with the base game anywhere. Am I blind?

I don't think there ever was a Dark Dirt that came with the base caw textures. If you go to your Programs Caw folder, you'll see all the base textures. You can copy and paste any you've missplaced into your Documents Caw folder.

HystericalParoxysm has a set with dirt_dark. It's available for download on post #16 of this thread, and Martine's has a Dirt_Dark_Base

My bad, I meant it comes as an in-game terrain paint. There is a light dirt and a dark dirt. I'm aiming to use textures that are already in the game so I can match them up on individual lots. I've already got the Light Dirt in my CAW files, but the file listed as Dark Dirt in Martine's pack doesn't seem to be the same one as the in-game one. I would try extracting it myself, but s3oc won't open.

Haha sorry to be a pain. I'm having another problem with the dark dirt -when using a round brush with a low opacity and falloff, all the other textures work and can be blended nicely, the dark dirt seems to have a jagged edge even with low falloff, and the opacity must be set high or it does not work at all, making it impossible to blend. Any idea why this is or how it can be fixed?

Where you add your texture in the list effects the way it reacts with the other textures. I like to add them in clusters from either dark to light, or vice-verse, depending on the effect I want.
Example Pallette:
Dark rock
Light Rock
Dark Dirt
Light Dirt
Light Grass
Medium Grass
Dark Grass
Also you can save the texture with a different setting. Most of Martines textures are saved as a DXT5 (Interpolated Alpha) which gives it a more transparent appearance, and it usually blends better. You can do a "save as" in a paint program, I use Paint.net, and save it as a DXT1 (Opaque/1-bit Alpha) and see if that helps.

You're amazing! It has the effect I was after now.
If the texture order has impact on the way they react with each other, is there any way to edit the order, without having to delete existing layers, after you've already started painting?

If you've already started painting, I would just stick with the way it is. I've tried deleting one in the center, then all the textures under it got wonky. It's not that big of deal, it just works a bit better for me, and how I paint. :giggler:

Wow thank you so much, everyone! This makes the terrain on my map look much better than it does with the default textures.
