topic explains it all: I was looking at my creator stats and it says "5 out of 10 moomins have download your blah blah blah"

What in the world is a moomin? I googled and I came up with these strange creatures from a swedish cartoon

That can't possibly be right.... even if we do have a strange sense of humor

Just curious

Edit: After refreshing I found out that the stat changes to other beasts I still don't understand what exactly that stat is though so could someone explain?

Oh, but it is right! Sometimes, I get penguins and dramallamas and doozers. MTS is a very diverse community. I happen to be a cat, so why not moomins too? On the internet, no one knows you're a moomin.

doozers

Okay, so imagine you have 10 moomins, and you put them all on computers connected to MTS, and told them they could download whatever they want. Now imagine someone stood behind those moomins, and every time they downloaded something then a note was made on a little clip board saying which download it was.

The "5 out of 10" statistic would mean that, out of those ten moomins who were participating in the experiment, five of them chose to download your 'blah blah blah'.

Of course, it's not always so straightforward. It could just as easily be that there were actually twenty moomins, and ten of them chose to download your 'blah blah blah'. I know, that sounds like crazy talk, but if you really think about it, it makes sense. That's because for every ten moomins who were on MTS, five of them downloaded the 'blah blah blah'. It just happened that there were two lots of ten moomins alltogether, and two lots of five moomins who downloaded your 'blah blah blah'.

It all comes down to fractions. You see, 5/10 is, mathematically, the same as 10/20. Try it on a calculator, you'll see it's true! It's also the same as 2/4 or 1/2. Fascinating!

So to summarize, that statistic is saying that, of all the moomins given free reign on your MTS downloads, approximately half of them will choose to download your 'blah blah blah'. That's a pretty damn good rate, so clearly your blahs appeal strongly to the moomin demographic. Congratulations!

I am forced to wonder though... What are they teaching kids in math these days?

Does it work the same way for emos and why would my creations appeal strongly to the emo demographic? I always thought emos were too busy listening to My Chemical Romance and getting their hair done.

Should I? I think they're before my time... They're very cute though

I understand fractions I just didn't get how you came up with the statistic. Thanks

Statistics don't lie. (Despite claims to the contrary by Mark Twain and Benjamin Disraeli.) It's possible that your work has encouraged the development of a new emo subculture, which is too recently evolved to be properly named. (I propose the term 'Buzzlemos').

This thread is made of win and pancakes. Served by moomins. I think Echo needs a cookie achievement... and Buzzler too.

Buzzler's already got one.

I think we need some sort of uber-cookie, for current cookie-holders.

How many sociologists are generous enough, when discovering a new subculture, to name it after someone else and not themselves? For that alone, Echo should get mad props.

In fact, while they may not lie, they are by definition incorrect. Since it's impossible to count every instance of an event or circumstance in the universe, statisticians use sample spaces to narrow their field of study down to just the relevant bits of reality. However, the ability to define an appropriate sample space properly requires the knowledge of every possible event/incident and the understanding of every possible cause and effect - in other words, you can't create a proper sample space unless you've already counted every instance of everything in the universe (and every instance of everything that could have been in the universe but wasn't in the end). Therefore, 100% of statistics are wrong.

I love Terry Pratchett.

I have a question: how do coelacanths use a computer, so they can do statistics about them? They would wet the computer and then it would explode. Or do they use special computers for fishes?

Special drysuits with keyboard manipulators? Or they ask their moomin friends to hit the thanks button for them maybe?

Ah yes, the simple solution is often best! Would that help with cats knocking over one's soymilk as well?

Whiterider Terry Pratchett books are one of the reasons life is worth living!
