Default Sims Mafia Challenge
Dramatic Introduction
Conner, owner of the Dirty Hooks Motel, flipped through his magazine as his eyes scanned the parking lot with increasing boredom and disgust. He was better than this. Better than being stuck as some aging old man with a dying piece of crap property. Conner had always wanted to be a business man, but he had wanted to be in the city. He hadn’t intended to own some place held together by dirty carpeting, wallpaper, and chewed bubblegum.

Sophia smirked at her unhappy husband glaring at their customers. It was simply too nice a day to be stuck inside a hotel room, so their customers, a total number of 8, were out enjoying the sun in the small pool and out on the parking lot. She brushed her graying hair from her face and continued sweeping the fall leaves from the second floor landing of the hotel.

“So what do you think?” Landon asked the pretty blond. Her name was Grace, a lounge singer who was moving into town. She was also playing hard to get. He rubbed his sweaty hands over his dirty jeans. “My pop doesn’t need me here all day. We can have dinner and a movie in town, yeah?”

Declan rolled his eyes at the desperate moves of the hotel owner’s son. He dropped his eyes back toward the map in his hands. It wouldn’t be much longer before they finally reached their destination. A warm, safe home would definitely ease the weight on his shoulders. He really missed his mother. A bump to his shoulder made him turn toward Lukas, his quiet, dorky companion. The other teen gave him a wary smile and handed over one of the soda bottles in his hands.

Jack sneered at the two boys, obviously runaways, with an obviously stolen car. He took another long draw of his cigarette before releasing the white cloudy build up. Little brats probably beat up some old lady for that broken down car. He shook his head, trying not to care. By tomorrow, he’d be in the city with a brand new start.

Stella tied her hair up in a loose ponytail as she kicked her legs around in the surprisingly clean hotel pool. Her rolled up jeans were tight around her knees and her jean jacket was tossed to the side of the tile and concrete pool. She wanted to enjoy the warm season while it lasted and relax before her new job drove her crazy.

Logan wiped his forehead with his handkerchief before walking out to the parking lot again. Despite the uncouth look of the tiny motel, it was very clean and fresh if not aged. The suited man was surprised the surly owner took such good care of the estate. He himself always took very good care of his things.

Ruby hovered by the door as she watched her new husband Matthew check out the beauty by the pool. It was irritating for her to see the man already playing the game not a day after they said ‘I do.’ She should have listened to her father, but love made you do stupid things.

“Pop! POP! POP get down here! We have an emergency!”

Conner and Sophia both rushed over to their son while their customers’ attention followed. The young man and Grace were turning up the volume on the radio for an emergency announcement.

“Strangetown authorities have reported that six bodies have been found inside the home. Several of the bodies were mutilated and are unidentifiable at this time. County authorities have issued a manhunt to capture the individuals seen fleeing the scene of the crime after leaving the Graceo mafia symbol. The figures have not yet been identified as male or female. Various reports conflict on the number of vehicles leaving the scene.

“The sheriff’s department have blocked of HWY 66 as the highway is the only way in and out of that area. Officials do believe that the individuals may be headed toward Belladonna Cove as the city has a larger population, making it easier to hide from police. Authorities advise that all individuals stay inside their homes. This warning applies to all areas receiving this broadcast. A 9 o’clock curfew is being enforced in the area while authorities continue searching for the dangerous individuals.”

Everyone looked at each other as all the motel occupants had heard the announcement. Most of the looks were suspicious. Why?

Highway 66 had three exits, one being the hotel. Despite the lack of open exits, there was only one way to Belladonna Cove and that was past the hotel.

One, if not more of them, were likely mafia.

Boring Factual Introduction
Mafia is a group game played with cards. Basically, the mafia is hiding as members of the community and your goal is to figure out who is who. The innocent, concerned citizens need to find out who among them are the mafia. So each day, accusations are thrown around by members of the group and the one suspected by most of the group the mafia is lynched (hung, killed, etc.). Each night, the mafia meets secretly to choose which innocent citizen to kill. The murder is discovered that morning.

Two others can be involved in the game. The cop, who silently investigates a different person each night, and the doctor, who can either protect a random individual or himself or herself.

By the end of the game, whichever group has more people wins. It’s Mafia versus Townsfolk.

If you don’t like "mafia vs. townspeople," you can change it to werewolves, vampires, serial killers, aliens, mutants, witches, etc. The titles of the doctor and cop will change though. (ie. Cop will become a Psychic.)

Set Up (and the headache that follows)
Open CAS. You’ll be creating a number of sims to be your townsfolk and mafia members. How you create your sims will be up to you. However, here are a few things to remember:
  • Looks – If your sim looks untrustworthy, others will think so too.
  • The number of sims – The length of your challenge will be affected by your number of sims. Remember, with exception of the first day (more explained below), you will have a death every sunrise and every sunset. An odd number was suggested by most mafia game instructions.
  • Personality – This is going to be a major point of emphasis when it comes time to accuse different sims. Their personalities and traits will determine how quickly they form friendships and what people might perceive of those personalities. Will your sim be easier or harder to accuse? (For fun: Create your sims without checking the personality points below.)
  • CRITICAL STEP: Do any of your CAS sims have relationships? In the introduction, I had various sims that were in relationships (familial, romantic, etc.). If you want sims married or related, be prepared to deal with the consequences.
All of these will affect your sims’ accusation points in the game. (See Accusation Points Below.)

Setting: When you have your sims ready and loaded, it’s time to place them on a lot. Here are several ‘scenes’ for the mafia game.
1. Isolated/Deserted Motel
2. Small Town or Village
3. Abandoned Building needed for emergency shelter
Any of these locations or any new ideas from your own mind could work. I’m personally fond of the isolated motel (My setting is Plasticbox's Cheap Motel. I renovated it by deleting furniture from a few rooms, deleting some outside tables and adding a diner inside.)

The next two steps for setup are critical for play, but you'll want to randomize roles and read about accusation points AFTER you've created your sims.

Choosing Citizens, Cop, Doctor, and Mafia:

Accusation Points:
Accusation Points are the most critical part of this game. This is how your sims will decide who lives and who dies at sunset. Accusation points are calculated by relationships, looks, behavior, and personality (for now). If a sim has high accusation points, the citizens will believe they are mafia and hang them.

Calculate your sims’ points at 6:00 pm each day. The sim with the highest accusation points is killed at sunset.

Whacking 101
Deciding who the mafia kills at night should be easy enough. Choose the person who has the lowest relationship with all the mafia sims. HOWEVER, if a sim is married to a mafia sim, they cannot be killed at night. They can only be lynched via accusation points.

F-U-N (Mostly…)
Now that your sims are placed, it’s time for our regularly scheduled programming. On the very first day, let your sims mingle with each other. At 9 o’clock, curfew begins and all sims must be in their individual rooms or at least inside a building. (Individual is helpful. It makes it easier when mafia has someone to whack.)

Sims caught outside after curfew earn +2 accusation points the next day.

At Night
A lot of action takes place at night. Mafia, the cop, and the doctor DO NOT earn accusation points for being out at night.

At 1 am, you must select the sim that has the worst relationship with the mafia. At 6 am, you will need to kill this sim.

After the mafia roll, you'll roll for the cop. It’s time for the cop to investigate one sim. The simplest way for the cop to investigate would be to assign your sims numbers. Roll a die and investigate the sim with that number. (Example: Conner is #1. So, my cop investigates him and discovers that he’s a citizen.) If you roll the number the next night, the cop must investigate the same person (unless they’re dead already).

If the cop discovers a Mafioso, that Mafioso earns +2 accusation points the following day.
NOTE: If your cop seems too powerful and you have too little sims, then allow the cop out every OTHER night. That way, things will be even (for however long your sims live).

The doctor is the last one. You should probably use the same dice roll as the cop did to decide who to heal. However, you have the option of deciding whether or not the doctor chooses to keep himself safe. If so, let your doctor stay in for the night. (Healer, heal thyself) HOWEVER, the doctor can only heal himself/herself ONE TIME.

By morning, you should have one dead sim. The sim selected by the mafia must be whacked by 6 am. You can use whatever method you like from actual weapons to boolprop deaths.

If your doomed sim was selected by the doctor, they have a pass for the night. Unfortunately, your selected sim has earned +1 accusation point.

Morning
During the day, let your sims interact. You can interfere as much or as little as you like. Regardless, by 6 pm, someone has to die. Allow all your sims to have a group meeting.

Count the accusation points you have for each sim. The one with the highest score that day is hung/ lynched/ eliminated/ exterminated/ removed/ vanquished/ deleted/ destroyed/ executed/ snuffed out/ None Shall Pass/ Do Not Pass Go/ Do Not Collect $200.

The accusation points, both positive and negative, work as people are accusing and defending each other.

Showdown!
Of course, the challenge has to end eventually and here it is.

Night follows day which, in turn, is followed by another night. Every day and every night another sim is dead. If you run out of mafia then the citizens win! If you have two mafia and one citizen/doctor/cop, then the mafia wins. Otherwise, if you only have one mafia left, you go into the showdown.

In the Showdown, there should be three sims. Two citizen/cop/doctor and one mafia. When the three wake up that morning, one has to make a friendly toward another sim. The gesture can be a hug, kiss, compliment, etc.

If a citizen makes this gesture to another citizen, the cop, or the doctor, the civilians win.
If a citizen makes this gesture to the last remaining mafia, the mafia wins.

Are you Team Mafia or Team Citizen? Either way, you get to have fun!

For my physical health, I can't eat cheesecake everyday.
For my mental health, I imagine eating cheesecake everyday.
It's a delicate balance.
