Her anger wear off and she notices it. Nothing. He was still silent and it was not the thoughtful silence that precedes an answer, it was a lingering silence. An awkward silence. And as she found herself shrouded in a cocoon of deafening silence, she grows uneasy as she becomes more conscious of the surrounding noises. Her breath. Loud. Stiff. The deaden beat of his fingers as they pound against the wheel. The distant noise of the traffic.

And her thoughts, so damn distinct yet so blank.

A shriek pierce through the silence and makes her flinch almost imperceptibly. A voice. He turned on the radio. The twang voice is quickly replaced by the distinctive beat and catchy samples of hip-hop music. Music. How many times had she been surrounding herself with it. Not for the music but as a noise. A deafening noise, to fill her ears and her mind, to wipe away the turmoil of her thoughts, to seek refuge into some kind of numb state. Was that silence getting to him too?

She bites her lips as she tries to think of something, something that doesn't feel even more awkward but can't think of anything. Her sight cast down, and as it fells on her knees she sees the brush and realizes that she'd been nervously twitching it for god knows how long, halts, look away. A second later, she looks back to the brush and put it away before resuming her musing sighting.

((decided that I like old Esteban better than new bizarro Esteban XD))

Deb was playing with her brush or something or the other in her hands. Esteban didn’t really know. He couldn’t see her from the corner of his eye and he sure as hell wasn’t going to keep glancing over at her like some nervous puppy. She wasn’t making the petite whimpering noises that chicks made when they were about to cry, thank god, so he figured she was mostly okay.

For now, he pretends like he’s absorbed in the beats thumping out of the old car’s speakers, even though its speakers are scratchy and sound like they’re trapped in a glass dome. Aside from the shitty sound quality, he could hear bits and pieces rattling in the car frame every time it tried to drop some heavy bass, as if it were about to break apart at its seams.

He drives from Lakeview to Williams, and the song changes. The rapper starts going off on the nasty shit he’s gonna do to some random hot bitches. It’s a song about some good, macho dick-waxing, which is probably why Esteban normally likes it.

At least for a little bit, the music helped Esteban take his mind off the awkward silence. It was stupid of him to ask about her mom, when it came down to it. Any fuckwit should’ve known it’d kill the conversation and bring up this awkward emo shit, but did he stop to think about that? Noooo.... Nice going, dipshit.

But right now with this song, it was worse. You couldn’t be sitting next to a chick doing nothing when a song like this was playing. Not when the word “doggy style” flies out of the speakers and the car fills with slutty moans, sampled and resampled over and over into a catchy beat. No, a song like this was meant for dry-humping. And somehow, that awkward silence didn’t become any less awkward when it was punctuated by simulated orgasms.

As Esteban speeds down Williams St., the urge to escape... to do something that wasn’t saying some stupid fucking platitude finally gets to him. At the last minute, he jerks the car into a right turn and pulls into a gas station, nearly overshooting its driveway. It’s not like anyone important was waiting on him at the dance, and it’s not like he couldn’t spare some of the blackmail money he was going to get from Matt, and he kind of owed her for driving him. And Deb’s car was low on gas anyway, so what the fuck. He might as well do something nice.

He pulls up to one of the pumps and switches off the engine, leaving the keys in the ignition and the radio on in case she wants to keep listening. He unclips his seatbelt, and as he opens the driver’s side door to get out, he glances at her once and mutters, “Be right back.”

((I hope that works? I know this one was longer, but it felt right to write more this time. Feel free to respond with as much or as little as you like ))

The landscape rapidly passes by before her eyes, bleak, having already lost the appeal of the first times that offered new perspectives. Same old scenery with its standard buildings from where stood out from time to time some quirky or colorful one. Her sight lingers on that real estate billboard that stood there, taunting her every time with its perfect family happily smiling in front of their big fucking house and her heart caught in her throat. Deborah starts to wonder if he feels the same when he pass by it and stirred by that thought and the fact that the lingering silence made her irking to check on him, she finally threw a fleeting glance at Esteban. He seemed not to care about the silence, absorbed with the music. She looks back by the window and tries to do the same, dissing her previous flashing instinct that made her attempt to relate to him. It was stupid anyway. As if it'd make her feel better.

The song changed to a dirty dancing song and her attempt comes to a sudden end as getting absorbed with the music to soothe the awkwardness felt suddenly not such a good idea. The sound of a fake orgasm ring out and she repressed the urge to glance at him. Usually, when this kind of music was played, she was busy doing something else and she never really paid attention to the lyrics but because of the surrounding silence, all she could do was pay attention. And it was making her feel way too conscious of his silent presence by her side to refrain from growing uneasy. She tries even harder to find something to say that would not sound like a lame excuse to break the silence but it was distracting.

And she was here, so focused on not showing any sign of embarrassment that she was almost forgetting to breathe when he abruptly sidetracked from their itinerary and her eyes widened by the surprise and she shot him another glance. Why? What was he doing? But as the gas station comes into view she catches on. He must really need to pee or something.

And as Esteban switch off the car and begin to get out, he said under his breath while directing briefly his sight to her :

"Be right back"

"Sure", she replied softly, as the corner of her mouth raised into a small smile.

He closes the door behind him and Deb's sight is inevitably drawn to the radio, still on, she hesitates, sigh and let it on. A second later, she look back at it, then at the keys and finally decides against sitting there waiting for him doing nothing and get out of the car for a breath of fresh air.

((ooc: sorry about the delay... again, posting from an internet cafe))

Esteban gets out of the car, swipes his sister’s card through the reader, and selects the cheapest fuel grade. When he gets the fuel injector in his hand, he shoves it into the car a more forcefully than usual. A flick of his fingers, and the trigger is pulled back and locked into place, and he can feel the rush of fuel through the metal under his palm.

When Deb gets out of the car, he throws her an inquisitive glance, and that’s it. He takes a couple steps away and leans back on the car, watching the digital display roll upwards. He’ll have to pay back every cent of this to Marissa, and he was inwardly hoping that Deb’s car had a small tank.

His teeth itch for a cigarette, but he’s not about to light up right next to a f*cking gas pump of all things. He crosses his arms over his chest and chews on his thoughts. A dark shadow cast over his eyes, he was hoping that Matt would give him a good excuse to punch him later.

For the first time tonight, as Deborah opens the door of the car, she welcomes the surrounding cold, invigorating, untangling her from that numbness state that she had began to set in. Lifting herself out of her seat, she raise a evaluating glance around, and as she swiftly embraces the setting that disclosed itself before her eyes she catches sight of Esteban who briefly returned her glance before averting his eyes from her, getting back to what he was doing, and she sees it before registering it. He was filling the tank.

And now that she sees it, she feels pretty stupid. How come she didn't see that coming, considering that most of the time when someone stops in a gas station, it's to fill the tank. She should have guessed but she didn't. The idea didn't even cross her mind. While she didn't expected him to ask her permission to go have a pee, when it came down to filling the tank of her car, if it needed badly a refill, which was something that she didn't expected because if it was low, she was almost sure that there was enough for the ride, why didn't he at least told her about it beforehand? Her eyebrows grew closer together forming tiny creases betraying the itching wave of annoyance that was surging on her as she realize she was about to get stuck in an uncomfortable situation, wondering how was she going to pay him back. And closing the door behind her, she opens the back door from the other side, dive into the back seats to reach for her bag, take her wallet inside it, and as she opens it, the creases on her forehead increased. 10 bucks. Far from enough for a full tank. Keeping the money on her hand, she puts her wallet back into her bag and as she gets out of the car, she throw a inquiring glance at the gauge and see that it's already over 20, which inevitably drawn her back to her brooding nurtured by her wounded pride. Great. Now, she was sure that she wouldn't be able to pay him back tonight and she would be indebted. He left her no choice in the matter. He couldn't expect her to let him pay for her car, couldn't he? She was poor as hell but still, she worked to help her father and they always managed to scrape by, hardly sometimes, but without having to rely on anyone's charity. She didn't wanted anyone's pity or charity. Is that how he saw her? As a charity case?

As that humiliating thought came to her mind, she raised once more her sight on Esteban, who seemed to be lost in his thoughts, leaned against the car and Deb forced herself out of such thoughts and tried to temper. It was probably meant as a nice gesture, no need to get all riled up over it. And circling the car, she moved next to Esteban and hands out the 10 bucks to him as she says gently but firmly :

"Here you go. I'll give you the rest on Monday"

Huh? What the f*ck was this?

Esteban raises an eyebrow as Deb holds out her $10 bill. He throws her a skeptical look, then shakes his head at her. No way in hell he was taking her money.

“Forget about it,” he dismisses as the gas stops pumping with a loud clunk!. The price meter reads a $31.84. He turns away from her, grabs the nozzle out of the tank, and shoves it back into the stand.

Then, he turns his head and looks back at her with only his eyes, stating firmly, “It’s for the car ride, so we’re even now. Okay?”

When Deborah had said that she'll pay him back, she hadn't formulated it as an offer but as a fact because, in her mind, it wasn't questionable. But Esteban seemed to think otherwise as he brushed it aside with a "Forget about it", apparently as unwilling as she was to bring the matter into discussion, punctuated by the distinctive sound made by gas-pumps when it automatically flips the nozzle off.

And seeing him turning his back to put away the nozzle raised a questioning brow on her face as her sight flickered inquisitively on the digital screen to make a mental note of the number showing on it before getting back on him. So that was it for him? But he turned back slightly only his head to look back at her and added firmly:

“It’s for the car ride, so we’re even now. Okay?”

"Uh...", she frowned, slightly puzzled by his reasoning.

So, he owed her a refill just because she offered him a ride? In addition to the fact that it didn't cost her an extra dime to bring him with her, what if she had been one of these kid who just had to wield mommy or daddy's credit card whenever they needed, or rather wanted something instead of... well, her... would he still have wanted to 'get even'? She somehow doubted it. So as for being even, every way she looked at it, they weren't. She owed him now. $31,84 exactly. A $31,84 ride in a junk car with a moody company, talk about a deal...

And circling the gas-pump to face him, she then replied in an unfaltering tone:

"We were even. I would've done it, with or without you, so... ", and she holds out resolutely her bill once more for him to take.

Damn, she was insistent, wasn’t she? What was it? Too proud to take a little money? Or did she think he was going to use this as leverage to try to weasel some action out of her later?

Esteban turns halfway to face her, scrutinizing the resolute look on her face then up and down, sizing up her body language. He crosses his arms calmly over his chest to indicate that he was not about to make a grab for her money. A lopsided smirk breaks the stern expression on his face.

“Put it away.” He insists, flicking the back of one hand at her in a go away motion before crosses his arms again. A sparkle of mischief in his eyes, he jokes and deflects the issue, “You know how much money you saved me on a limo?”

As Esteban turned back once more to Deborah who was standing resolutely there, softly shivering under the freezing cold, her right arm extended wielding at its extremity the money for him to grab, he sized her up with a backward glance that drew her into straightening up her posture as what was initially meant a simple adjustment -after all, all he had to do was take his money back, how hard could that be...- was now making her fell like she was part of a mental showdown. And instead of extending his arms to reach for the money, Esteban reacted by crossing them on his chest in what couldn't be mistaken for anything other than a definite dismissal of her attempt to pay back.

"Put it away",he finally blurted, his face lightened up with a crooked smile that she didn't knew quite how she should take as he backed up his assertion with a dismissive wave that stirred up a slight growing irritation inside her chest despite her efforts.

Message received loud and clear. Why was he so opposed at the sole idea of being paid back? Because it was her money? Out of principle? And as she was trying to grasp Esteban motives, he added mischievously to defuse the situation:

“You know how much money you saved me on a limo?”

Deborah brows closed in in a dubious stance while her mouth quirked up into an amused little smile, welcoming the joke that eased out the building tension and offered a way out she was about to seek. If insisting by restarting a second time her intent to pay him back had been necessary to make it clear that she wasn't just offering to pay him back out of civility, hoping that the initial offer would stand, but that she meant it, he clearly didn't want to hear about it and pressing the matter was as pointless as trying to go through a brick wall with someone as stubborn as he seemed to be. She'll find a way to pay him back somehow. And finally cutting the brief silence that had been settling in, and bringing her arm back along her body, she acquiesced:

"All right"

And as she was already turning to get back to the car, she turned her head to threw him a scrutinizing look, before observing with a malicious smile:

"Limo guy, huh?"
