Default Removing items yet remaining compatible with Mac games
So as described in this thread, I am trying to create an unoccupied house for the Messy Messlot challenge. (All the other houses I could find out there were messed up by having a sim move in and live there, so they are all previously occupied. We now know that this is not very safe.) I made my lot with grungy kitchen and bathroom recolors by paigeturnersims, buyable garbage and newspapers by Sophie-David, buyable weeds by HugeLunatic, and buyable roaches (that cause sickness) by theninthwave, all from here on MTS. I also built it in my Mac game, so that it would be available to all the Mac Simmers out there, of whom I was one for a very long time. After playtesting a copy (cloned by placing the original lot in the Lots & Houses bin) I packaged the lot up from my Mac using the in-game package-to-file function, and put it on my Windows machine to test. When I went to install it with CleanInstaller, I noticed the following:

1. The recolors by paigeturnersims did not package up with the lot. This is not a problem, since I can just direct people to download them: kitchen and bath
2. The buyable weeds were highlighted in CleanInstaller in red. I know that this can indicate bad things, and I'd like to remove it from the download. I was able to remove it on my Mac using Mac Unpac, and the weeds still showed up (as I would expect, since they are a Maxis object originally), but when I packaged up the lot with the cc weeds removed from the original package, the weeds reappeared in CleanInstaller on my Windows machine.
3. The buyable roaches packaged with the lot, and work correctly on my Mac: the very first thing my original test sim did after he moved in was find some roaches to stomp on, and he caught the flu almost immediately. However, on my Windows machine, I let the game run for 48 game hours, and not one roach made an appearance. I don't want to include a hack that does nothing, so I tried removing the roaches with Mac Unpac. When the lot with no packaged roaches was placed, roaches did appear, but they behaved like normal game roaches with no added sickness. The sim that tested that house did eventually get the flu from the roaches, but only after about 12 game hours of stomping and spraying. When I packaged up the lot with the cc roaches removed from the original package, the roaches reappeared in CleanInstaller on my Windows machine.
4. I tried opening the lot with CleanInstaller, removing the weeds and roaches from the lot package, and saving the result. Without ever booting my Windows game, I tried the saved lot without the weeds and roaches on my Mac. Mac Unpac could not find the file to install it, and although the Maxis installer said that the lot was installed, it did not show up in my game.
5. I cannot open the lot on my Mac and remove the roaches completely, because they disappear once you've placed them and I have no idea where they are. And removing the weeds completely would defeat the purpose of the challenge.

The obvious solution would be to take the lot from the Mac, remove the offending cc with CleanInstaller, load the lot in a Mac-friendly AGS slot, and repackage it without the cc I don't want to include. Unfortunately, I am one of those unlucky people for whom AGS borks the whole installation, and I cannot do so. Could someone with a Mac-friendly AGS slot please help me out? ( @marka93 has offered to at least take a look if I post in Creator Feedback. Thank you, marka93!)

Probably whoever helps me out would also need the recolors for the kitchen and bath for the lot to package correctly. Even if those recolors don't package with the lot, I think they're required for the game to know to use them when the downloader installs the house?

On my Mac, the EPs and SPs installed are: base game, Uni, NL, OFB, Pets, Seasons, Bon Voyage, Family Fun Stuff, and Glamour Life Stuff.

Please let me know what I can do to help, or if anything even can be done except to recreate the lot in a Windows game. At this point, I am almost ready to give up on having a Mac-friendly lot, since I can't make it happen...

EDIT: It would help if I provided a link to the file, no? Here is the original lot, no modifications or items removed: https://app.box.com/s/byglyfjehk1798o5xbw9bqxhhdtd3c2t

@esmeiolanthe

Every thing reverted back to Maxis items and when i packed up the lot it only shows the lot nothing else.

Give it a try and see what happens.

You can upload to this thread and you don't need to use off site uploads for this.

@marka93 I checked with CleanInstaller, I did indeed see the lot and nothing else. Then I tried installing the lot on my Windows machine (since that is the machine that's booted up already), and when I loaded the lot: no trash, no weeds, no newspapers, no roaches. I don't mind about the "no roaches" part, but the trash, the newspapers, and the weeds are kind of the point of the exercise. Without trash and weeds and newspapers, the lot is just a really ugly house, not a Messy Messlot challenge house.

I suppose I'll just have to rebuild on my Windows machine, without any roaches, and tell people they can remove the weeds with CleanInstaller if they want to.

Thanks for your help!

I did not have any of those mods so none of it showed up for me. You can still add all the stuff back to it for your challenge.

If you want to pack up all the mods and upload them here and I can put them in and just remove the weeds one.

I would keep the weeds, I think they are a big part of the horribleness of the lot. What happens if you put the weed file in, place weeds on your lot, save and exit the game. Pull the weed file and reload the lot? Do the weeds still show, they might being a game object as the game can pull from it's own files.

The weeds may stay there I am gona test that out today. I did not check it but one of the lots still had weeds and I will look into that lot again.

ADD: This one still has the weeds in the yard and all the trash piles but not the weeds mod .

@esmeiolanthe

Pack up all the mods but for the weeds and upload them and I will see what happens. got them now so no need for them

@esmeiolanthe Let me know when you get this fixed one and i will remove it.

@marka93 I got the file -- thank you, thank you, thank you! I've tested it, and it will open just fine in both a Windows game and a Mac game. Neither CleanInstaller nor Mac Unpac display the buyable weeds in the content list. Both show the roaches. But once again, the roaches show up instantly on the Mac (the very first thing Ajay Loner did was go over and stomp on them) but they don't show up at all on the Windows machine. (Julien Cooke was perfectly happy to pull weeds and admire the smoke detector all on his own, but he didn't appear to notice and roaches, and I didn't see any either.)

This strikes me as a bad thing. What could be causing that behavior? Is there a way to fix it? *esmeiolanthe is now confused

It might be just load order and you may want to try and have it load last.

Where is the mod from.

It's from right here at MTS: http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=316987

The creator says it might take a few seconds for roaches to appear, and it does on the Mac, but in an earlier test on the Windows machine I let the game run for 48 game-hours (on speed 3) and no roaches.

I only have one mod for the roaches: BuyableRoachesSicknessV1

My Documents says "Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)". I have not changed this attribute since I set up Windows the first time around, and I don't remember what I set it to then. However, I do know that I did not manually install the buyable roaches into my Windows game (manually dragging and dropping from the folder where all my downloads end up when I click the "download" button). So they must have installed with one version or another of the lot. Should I have the game generate a new Sims 2 folder on the Windows machine and see if the roaches show up there?

@marka93 I will take you up on that offer! Thank you so so so much! I think you probably deserve more credit than me for the lot at this point -- you are made of Awesome, and I am very very grateful. How can I return the favor?

That lot had roaches on the Mac and no roaches on the PC as well. I am completely baffled.
