Looking to make a custom trait or two
Problem is, I don't even know where to start. What kind of work does it require (complex coding, or simple "cut-n-replace")? How to I access or put together the file required for it to work? Is it possible to access a default trait, duplicate it, and change it?I've tried searching for this information, but I can't seem to find anything.

I found and opened up "Japanese Culture Trait" and "Hypochondriac Trait", but I'm not totally sure what I'm supposed to look at or start with. The only things they have in common are icons for the traits. "Japanese Culture" doesn't seem to have moodlets, or dreams, while "Hypochondrian" does, and "Japanese Culture" has actions to go with it, while "Hypochondriac" does not.

Does anyone have a tutorial or something?

I start to feel tired of explaining things but please bear with me. It's definitely "complex coding" and if you have no modding experience it's going to be difficult. And therr are never tutorials on specific game modding areas (eg custom skill, trait....) Tutorials can only cover so much that you'll have to venture on your own, if you have coding questions you can always ask though

That kind of is what I'm asking. I've never opened up these traits files before, so I don't know what does what.

Still looking for help. Maybe someone who has made a custom trait could tell me what they did? I just need an idea of where I'm supposed to start, what's key, and what to avoid so the game doesn't break.

In the month that's gone by, I've had time to work out (more or less) the traits I want to make.
Maybe someone could offer ideas on how to make them work, since these are kinda just rough drafts.
Empty
Empty Sims are essentially emotionless. Almost nothing phases them, for better or worse. Sometimes this can put a damper on relationships, but can also keep your Sim calm during emergencies.
Conflicts with: Excitable, Over-Emotional, Neurotic
Attributes:
-An Empty Sim has a harder time making new friends than others.
-Sims cannot discover this trait through mind-reading.
-Empty Sims will more or less ignore emergency situations, and act as needed without panic.
-Empty Sims will not (visually) react to celebrations.
-An Empty Sim doesn't feel the need to seek out social interaction as often as other Sims.
Character Examples:
Illumi Zoldyck (HxH), Rei Ayanami (Evangelion), Pinhead (Hellraisers), Raven (Teen Titans)
Creepy
No matter how your Sim behaves around others, there will always be an unsettling air about your Sim.
Conflicts with: none
Attributes:
-Other Sims will react to your Sim way they react to things like mummies or cemeteries.
Character Examples:
Hisoka (HxH), Yuno Gasai (Mirai Nikki), Damien Thorn (Omen), Toshio (Grudge), Gin Ichimaru (Bleach)
Liar
Never believe a word that comes out of this Sim's mouth; it's likely far from true!
Conflicts with: none
Attributes:
-Will often make up stories, especially when gossiping (i.e. "My baby died" when baby
is alive and well ; "Agnes Crumplebottom is incredibly poor")
-Can talk about conspiracies with other Sims.
-Sims may say they can't come over, but come over anyway; or say they can and don't.
-May lie about their traits (i.e. "I'm an Aries!" but is really a Leo)
-Will have problems making friends, particularly if their lies are discovered.
Character Examples:
Hisoka (HxH), Ramjet (TFA), Tom Riddle (Harry Potter), GLaDOS (Portal)
Mute
These Sims don't talk. Or rather, they likely can't. Instead, they often have to play a game of charades with other Sims to get their point across.
Conflicts with: Charismatic, Social Butterfly
Attributes:
-No audio will play for these Sims' voices after the game has begun.
-Will have a harder time learning the charisma skill.
-These Sims will also have a harder time communicating with other Sims
-Phone calls cannot be made by this Sim, and they will often resort to texting instead of other methods of communication.
Character Examples:
Kisa Sohma (Furuba), Chell (Portal), Megumi Yamamoto (Special A), Celty (Durarara), Dwayne (Little Miss Sunshine)
Cannibal
Always be careful around these Sims, the phrase "have you for dinner" isn't always a pleasant thing!
Conflicts with: Vegetarian
Attributes:
-This trait requires a killing mod.
-This trait is best when paired with Natural Cook.
Character Examples:
HABIT (EmH), Nishiki Nishio (Tokyo Ghoul), Hannibal (Red Dragon), Andy St.John (Walking Dead), Donald Love (GTA)
Strictly Cannibal
Unlike the casual human-eaters you see on TV, these Hannibals are strictly cannibals!
Conflicts with: Vegetarian, Cannibal
Attributes:
-This trait requires a killing mod.
-This trait is best when paired with Natural Cook.
-Strictly Cannibalistic Sims can not eat any thing other than other humans.
Character Examples:
Touka Kirishima (Tokyo Ghoul), Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw), Maneater Mildred (Dark Souls), Alex Mercer (Prototype), Gluttony (FMA)
Sweet Tooth
If it's not sweet, they won't touch it.
Conflicts with: Health Fanatic
Attributes:
-Learns dessert recipes faster
-Any sweets made by these Sims are better quality than other meals they make.
-Sweet Tooth Sims will receive negative moodlets for non-sweet foods, and positive moodlets for sweets.
-Will also be more prone to snacking on ice cream than any other quick meal.
Character Examples:
Kanato Sakamaki (Diabolik Lovers), L (Death Note), Justin Hammer (Iron Man 2), Professor Rowan (Pokemon), Calliope (Homestuck)
Roleplayer
I'm not a nerd, I just have a big imagination!
Conflicts with: none
Attributes:
-Better at video games.
-Learns writing skill faster.
-Able to L.A.R.P. and roleplay on computer.
Character Examples:
Travros (Homestuck), Sarah (Labyrinth), Carmen (South Park), Soos (Gravity Falls), Akatsuki (Log Horizon)
Hydrophiliac
No. Stop. You can't swim in the aquarium.
Conflicts with: Hydrophobic
Attributes:
-Can swim anywhere, at any time.
-Prefer baths over showers.
-Positive moodlets whenever they're in the water, brief negative moodlet when getting out of water.
Character Examples:
Haruka Nanase (Free!), Bluebell (Katekyou), Melody (Little Mermaid 2), Aoi Asahina (Dangan Ronpa), Suigetsu Houzuki (Naruto)
Oblivious
No disaster or emergency phases Oblivious Sims, assuming they even realize something is happening to begin with!
Conflicts with: Genius
Attributes:
-These sims learn the Logic and Cooking skills slower.
-Are unaffected by disasters or emergencies, and often respond poorly to them (i.e. standing and staring in awe during a fire), if they respond at all.
-Learn other Sim's traits slower.
-Similar to Unlucky Sims, Oblivious Sims will often be the cause of cooking disasters, and broken items.
-Oblivious Sims will have a harder time recognizing when their needs are low.
-Pregnant Oblivious Sims may not realize they're pregnant until the final trimester.
Character Examples:
Fry (Futurama), Goku (DBZ), Muriel (Courage), Naruto (Naruto)
Health Fanatic
Cookies? No! Ice cream? Never! Germs? Not in this house! Good health is the pride and joy of these Sims, there's no changing that!
Conflicts with: Sweet Tooth, Couch Potato, Slob
Attributes:
-Basically a combination of Neat, Athletic, Loves Outdoors, and Vegitarian.
-Will avoid sweets when possible; gains negative moodlet if desserts are eaten.
-Becomes stressed if confronted with a messy home.
-Prefers tofu/vegetarian foods and fish over red meat; Gains positive moodlet for eating them.
Character Examples:
Austria (Hetalia), Gurgle (Finding Nemo), Quarians (Mass Effect)
Maybe someone could offer ideas on how to make them work, since these are kinda just rough drafts.

this seems to be a bit interesting (and I guess you saw it already). About needing core mods. Yet so far I can see, the scripts for traits is pretty core mod. I'm not sure if you know C# language? But that's how traits are made basically.
