Default What do I do with the money?
Before my sim passed away, a single mother who raised her daughter all by herself, she had 195.000 in funds (I had even taken away 20.000 since every sim starts with it so she would technically start with 0).

I had no idea what to do with the money, I could buy a newer house but I myself had built the house and I was very fond of it, it was designed to look like a small military center with a lot of military elements to it.
I was at first thinking of buying a vacation home, but that's a bit dull since it's much nicer to visit different places and hotels each time you go on a vacation.

Buying a community lot sounds neat, but even if my sim would buy a store it she would get 0$ since in this game you have to be at the community lot to actually make people buy things, you can't just sit around at home and wait for the store to run itself.
I know that you can hire a manager, but how does that work really?! Can I just hire a manager to a store on another lot and then wait for the money to keep comming? Is there no mod out there that allows me to own a store that runs itself?

Yes you can just hire a manager (although I tend to wait and promote people up).

She could open a military training centre or a school or something?

Personally I would keep it and wait and see if anything crops up.

Open a military training centre? How do I do that?
I mean, she could hire employees who train all day etc but I could need some more elements

Sorry for the really dumb question, but how do you hire a manager? I never have businesses away from homes because I can't be bothered to go there all the time, haha.

She could buy a hospital or a school and have it named after her.

A military training Centre would be good if you have interest in having a military. I have plans to do that at some stage in a shopping district in my integrated hood. For the centre I would have a few of the body skill obstacle courses, punching bags and treadmills with a few trainers who had all body skills so they can give lessons. A dorm type room for them to sleep in, a cafeteria probably using the uni cook top and the patch to spawn a cafeteria worker to cook. A class room where a teacher can use the skill podium from simwardrobe to teach a skill like mechanical and have each cadet write an essay (novel)

As soon as an employee gains enough badges the option will be there to 'hire as manager'. I never use them as I think they are a waste of money. You still have to ring in each day and every day they make less and less money until you go to the lot. I'd rather just go and play the lot.

Yeah, I meant a pretend training centre, I create a lot and anyone in the military career (not the teen levels, just the adult ones and the last teen level) gets ported in by some method which adds them to the family. There are barracks, training rooms/areas and a common area/mess hall. They live here, working, training, socialising, until they ammass a set number of vacation days (5 or 7, I usually go by) and then they get to go home "on leave" until those vacation days are used up. I also have a chance of death in my military career (and a secret nearby facility where alien spawn are raised in secret...) so it's quite a fun lot to play.

To hire a manager you need an employee with a gold badge (in anything) and then you assign them as a manager, once the manager is assigned you can check in from home using the phone.

They don't need a gold badge only enough badge points. They can also have that from a combination of bronze and silver badges.

Edit:Just Googled to double check and it's 5 badge points so a gold(3 points) + a silver (2) or it could even be five bronze badges.(1 point each)

I like the money, I don't want it gone - it was just that I had no idea what to do with it.

About the military center: that sounds really nice! But the soldiers? Am I just going to have them as regular workers (OFB type)?
It's not like I actually want to make more money, just spend it somehow

If you do get a military centre, get the dress uniforms for your soldiers from Charity (here and here). They're (especially the teens) the cutest and least threatening soldiers I've ever seen!

(I can't think of an excuse to have them in my game.)

I would have the military centre be a residential lot. You would need someone in charge to live there, so she would have to give them the money to buy it. You could set it up with Monique's payment system so the sim pays her back or it could simply be in her name like places in real life often are. You could have a sim paint her portrait to hang up in the lobby. The cadets can be temporarily moved in via Christianlov's transporter mirror. Another option would be to make it a dorm either at a uni or at a base hood uni and the cadets would be students. Once I get back to it I am building a medieval barrack dorm for my medieval hood so my knights can train there. I have stuff like knife throwing and dueling dummies there. You can do nearly anything with the right mods.

It sounds way more fun to just have a residental lot and then hire people and force them to wear army/military wear, but how can I force them to train? I mean, how can I force them to use training equipment?

It was this pic that made me think of making them (even though it isn't exactly the same). So, very dressy hehe.

Everyone probably knows this, but still. You have to actually go to your community lot to assign an employee as manager, you can't hire them to be that straight away (just as you can't hire someone to be a cashier, you have to tell them to face to face).

You also won't get any money from calling in unless the store has actually made money. The amount you get is based on your last time running the store, and as jo pointed out, will decrease every day unless you go back in and run it yourself again.

I'd personally set up more economic rules, to deal with money. In my hood, university costs 5000 per term if you live in a dorm, and 10000 if you live in a private house alone, or 7000 if you share with someone. If you don't have parents who can pay, you have a year to do so after graduating. After that you have to pay interest. I enjoy that, because it gives all Sims a purpose with getting a job, beyond getting a house, and if they want to live somewhere nice they have to work for it.

if you use Christianlov's transporter mirror they are temporarily moved in and you have full control of them.

Since it is medieval objects probably from Plumb Bob Keep. I'll look tomorrow as it's way late over here and I'm falling asleep at the key board. The dual dummy might be by Nix sims and or Rebeka at Affinity sims.

Yep, you move them in temporarily or use a mod like that transporter and they become selectable so you just direct them to train. If they whine that they're too tired, or hungry, or whatever... well... you decide the punishment Maybe they'll use their free time more effectively next time!

Here's my army base timetable:

Now if there was a mod that could allow Sims to do drill -- I'm not sure, but I've done military-style drill before, and you have to be in near-perfect sequence with the people beside you. You can't move faster or slower, always on the same foot as everyone else, and you must march in sync. Especially comparing that Sims usually walk differently, and they don't react too well if they run into an obstacle, it's quite difficult to run a real military training center in The Sims 2 if everyone is off-step. Also... no looking around! You have to look straight ahead... and Sims often turn their heads to either look at other Sims or at the player. You normally get yelled at by whoever's instructing the drill, but you can't yell at your screen and expect your Sims to hear, right? You decide their punishment :p

Of course you can just run a pure fitness center for the lackey soldiers and have them run the military obstacle course a hundred times a day. Always on schedule, get those recruits into the dining hall (I mean, Mess Hall) exactly at 1200 hrs and out by 1245 hrs, so having a mod that reduces their talkativity while they eat is important, since Sims can literally take hours if they share a meal with other Sims.

This military center idea sounds awesome; I plan on eventually building one myself- with an elaborate set of rules, of course. It will be a residential lot for one General, who is the only sim allowed to have the military career. The soldiers will be employees who come in for a set number of hours every day and run the obstacle course (which increases their body skill and the cost of paying them). The general's salary will represent the plunder extracted from raiding nearby kingdoms-- when a chance card comes up, that means that a major battle has been fought: success yields a big chunk of plunder and some slaves, while defeat means having to kill off a random number of soldiers. Their portraits will hang in Memorial Hall and their bones will lie in a special tomb on the military lot- I might have the government make arrangements to support their widows and orphans too.

More generally, when it comes to spending money, patronage is king. If you just want to burn the money on something cool to remember your sim's success by, another possibility would be a library or park, since they won't require any employees to keep running. Then you can name the lot after her and hang her portrait prominently. Another idea I'm toying with: set up a "foundation" - a residential lot with fortune sims- transfer the money to them and they can invest the money and use the income for good (scholarships, pensions for your veterans, etc.) You have a huge range of opportunities here

Anyone ever build a military base as a subhood before? I was thinking to include barracks, a galley/mess hall, a NEX/PX exchange, an Officer's Club, a hospital, ships for a Naval base, airport hangars for an Air Force base, a PT center, a base library, a park, and a school for the dependent children. Building all of this stuff would certainly burn through the money, in fact, it would probably burn through more than $195,000, but if you ever have a larger sum of money to burn through...

I wonder if there is a hack for that, so you don't get less money if you don't visit. That would be cool.
