Well...i use Paint.NET...did you edit the Alpha file with Paint.NET? There's a glitch with it meaning you must use normal Paint to edit these without problems.

Of course! GIMP is very much like Photoshop, so there's no reason why it wouldn't work. (That said, you should be familiar with GIMP and its tools before you try using a Photoshop tutorial. The skills should be transferable... but not all the tools are in the same place or called the same thing.)

Simple answer? Don't use Windows Paint. You can't do much with it at all. Try one of the free programs out there (like The GIMP).
