Default Help with MasterController and Portrait Panel mods
Hey there everyone. I have a few questions regarding mods for Sims 3.

So, I was trying to install a mod for my girlfriend so she can have more than 8 Sims in a single household, and something went wrong. I watched this video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pPLJyXt4dE. If you don't feel like watching it, it just gives steps to make a mods folder, links to where to download the files (3 of them. resource.cfg, MasterController, and PortraitPanel), and tells you which files to delete from the existing files.

The problem is, I followed to video step by step, and double-checked to be sure it worked. However, once I was done, the Sims wouldn't even load. It would just flash the loading circle before disappearing, doing nothing. Even after I removed the downloaded mods, and restored the files I had to delete (CASPartCache.package, compositorCache.package, scriptCache.package, and simCompositorCache.package) it didn't work until I restarted my computer.

So my questions are: should I not have had to delete any files in the first place? Should I have tried restarting my computer before deleting the downloaded mods? Or could the be some other issue here that I'm not seeing?

Also, here: http://imgur.com/a/RaWU1 is a link to 4 screenshots. 2 of my sims files, 1 of my mods folder, and 1 of my packages folder...if it helps

Edit: Its working now. I redid the steps, the exact same ones as last night, and it loaded up fine, and a menu popped up saying it received and accepted the mods. So I don't know what was wrong last night, but whatever the case, thank you for trying to help anyway

What did you delete the first time? Whenever you install mods or any other CC, delete the cache files.
Installing mods doesn't require a computer restart.

I'm not sure about the resource file. I just install the folder framework from here with the correct resource.fig file and folders.

For best and most detailed info on CC and mods, you might want to start reading here:

Is she patched to the latest patch level? If the game isn't patched to the mod's level, that doesn't work either. Keep in mind, the launcher isn't always correct when indicating the patch level, so patching manually even when it doesn't seem necessary can help.

Deleting those cache files doesn't break anything.
Did your game crash? XCPT files are only created after crashes. If so, you can delete those. Alternatively, could it be a memory issue? Have you disabled Data Execution Prevention for TS3? info here

Make sure Master Controller and every other mod of that type that you download actually match your patch level. You'll find versions for different patches on the Nraas Wiki under every mod. If you don't know your patch level, open the Launcher; your patch level is written on the bottom left, under the Game Updates tab. Alternatively, hover over the small Basegame icon from the icons at the very bottom and you should see your patch level there as well.

To have more than 8 Sims in a house, click on the City Hall or a computer -> Nraas -> Master Controller -> Settings -> Allow More Than Eight Sims Per House = True (I think the default is False, click on it to change it to True).

Edit: here are the contents of my Resource.cfg file. Make a new document in Notepad, copy/paste the stuff below and save it with that name. Make sure to change the extension to .cfg as well afterwards. Then move the file to your Mods folder under My Documents.
