A Top Notch Competitive Career for Top Notch Competitive Sims

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever wanted a truly competitive career for your sims? I have. In my opinion, Maxis’s careers are not competitive enough, including those university careers. I had hope that Maxis didn’t stop at the Bachelor degree level, I had hope that Maxis made an EP for graduate school so that my sims can get a Ph.D. degree and get more prestigious jobs with better pay.

In real life, those who have a graduate degree (i.e. Master level and Ph.D. level) make significantly more money than those that have only a Bachelor degree. In fact, many high level jobs in the government and in private industry do require a Master or a Ph.D. degree. It is even more so in the pharmaceutical industry, drug companies are constantly recruiting Ph.D.s to lead their drug discovery projects. People with only a Bachelor degree will never get to level 4 in the pharmaceutical industry of drug discovery. Since Maxis never bother created a truly competitive career, this is why the pharmaceutical industry career came about.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first pharmaceutical industry career ever created for any sims game. This is not to be confused with the pharmacist career, as these two careers are completely different. One should know that pharmacists do not make drugs, and they do not work on drug discovery, chemists do.

In this career track, except level one, every level closely resembles a real career ladder rung in the world of pharmaceutical industry. The skill requirements to get promoted in each level is a lot tougher than even the Maxis’ university careers because this is exactly so in the scientific discipline of drug discovery, and to simulate the difficulty of obtaining a graduate degree (especially Ph.D. level). The ultimate goal of those who are in this field is being a pharmaceutical entrepreneur (or pharma entrepreneur for short). It is very hard to attain in real life, but the reward is extraordinary.

I created this career a long time ago, it has been used in my sims world for 17 generations, every college graduate in my neighborhood (at least 370 of them) has been a pharma entrepreneur at least once at one point in their life. After they reached level 10, they would switch to another career, they never stopped at level 10, they constantly did job hopping. This is the only way to keep my sims happy.

IMPORTANT: You need the Sims 2 University EP installed and your sims need a college degree to ‘see’ the pharmaceutical industry job posting on a computer. There are a total of 10 chance card questions; sims wear a lab coat to go to work from level 1 through 6, and wear everyday clothes from level 7 through 10; career reward object is the Biotech Station; carpool for level 9 and 10 is the limo. Note: I purposely did not use the helicopter because it is too noisy, sims don’t like it. This career has its own unique GUID, does not overwrite Maxis’ careers, is EP ready, and has its own custom career icon (made by me), and satisfies aspiration want with top memory.

Explanation of custom career icon: The ball and stick model used on the advertisement page (or the main thumbnail) was made to show the 3-D structure of the molecule Methane. In game, it will just be 2-D. Methane was chosen because it is small enough to fit in the confine space of an area of 36x36 pixels on the screen. Ball and stick model signifies that one must know the reaction mechanism down to the molecular level in order to predict the drug product(s).

Tips: Sims need to develop a variety of skills simultaneously, from the most relevant to the least relevant are: Logic, Cleaning, Cooking, Creativity, Mechanical, Charisma (not until mid level), and Body. Don’t forget to make friends too. Every skill level in this pharmaceutical industry career was set intentionally high to simulate the hard work and risk one must take to reach the top. This career track is more difficult for family sims, romance sims, and pleasure sims because gaining skill is not their passion. You should have enough hints to guide your sims to the top now.

Thanks for viewing, enjoy, and happy simming.

Updated: Now there is a Pharmaceutical Industry Major that goes with this Pharmaceutical Industry Career. Sims who graduated with GPA 4.0 will have a boost in this career.

CAREER LEVEL DESCRIPTION

Level 1. Healthy Volunteer. 200 simoleons. M T W Th F 3pm to 6pm.

While in college, you take a side job testing out new drugs for a large pharmaceutical company. While there is a small danger of side effects, this job will give you contacts in the industry that will help you land a big job when you graduate. Getting hired by a pharmaceutical company requires a wide range of skills so study hard!

Level 2. Laboratory Technician. 400 simoleons. M T W Th F 9am to 5pm.

You have landed your first full time job at a pharmaceutical company. You will be mixing, cooking, freezing and distilling chemicals according to the Standard Operating Procedures laid down by more senior scientists. There is no room for error or creativity here so measure those microliters precisely. If you study hard to advance your skills, maybe you can be promoted to a job where you can work independently rather than following orders.

Level 3. Graduate Research Assistant. 800 simoleons. M T W Th F 9am to 5pm.

You realized that in order to get to the top of the pharmaceutical industry, you need to get a Ph.D. degree, so you went back to graduate school. You will need to work hard for a while until you pass the preliminary written and the preliminary oral exams. Getting research done and writing a thesis won’t be too hard once you have enough logic and creativity.

Level 4. Scientist. 2500 simoleons. M T W Th F 10am to 4pm.

Now that you have a Ph.D. degree in chemistry you finally have some respect and you have been promoted to scientist. You are no longer just taking orders, you have to do some thinking to come up with new drugs. You will also be representing your company at scientific meetings, but do not release too much information in the meetings since rival pharmaceutical companies will also be present at these meetings.

Level 5. Senior Scientist. 3500 simoleons. M T W Th F 10am to 4pm

You are climbing the company ladder slowly and are now at a more senior position. Try to come up with some charisma and you can be leading the research projects.

Level 6. Principal Scientist. 4500 simoleon. M T W Th F 10am to 3pm.

You are now leading a group of scientists on a clinical study of your company's important new drug. You supervise all the staff working on this project. When the Food and Drug Administration has questions on the project they come to you so keep your charisma high. In between clinical studies you will be writing research proposals for even more clinical studies to keep your company's coffers full.

Level 7. Associate Director. 5500 simoleon. M T W Th F 10am to 3pm.

You are now helping the marketing department present new drugs at federal agencies and to the media. You are now spending less time on research and more time justifying to the public why the pharmaceutical company needs to keep its prices so high. Although you are interacting with some extremely intelligent and experienced scientists at the Food and Drug Administration, you still have to spend a lot of time helping these intelligent people pronounce the names of your new drugs.

Level 8. Science Director. 6500 simoleons. M T W Th F 10am to 2pm.

You are now leading an entire department at your company so you are spending more of your day on administrative duties. You make the decision on which new drugs to develop or not to develop. It costs tens of millions of simoleons to develop a new drug so pick carefully.

Level 9. Pharma CEO. 7000 simoleons. M T W Th F 10am to 2pm.

You are now in control of one of the largest, most profitable companies in the world. Wherever people are sick, you are making a simoleon. Remember to serve lots of drinks to the members of the governing board. Usually after they have 7 or 8 drinks they start uttering the bizarre inexplicable words that become the names of your new drugs.

Level 10. Pharma Entrepreneur. 7486 simoleons. M T W Th F 10am to 2pm.

After years of watching investors get rich off your ideas, you decided to start your own company. You can now move your best ideas to the front of the development cycle right away. Maybe someday your firm will be so successful that you can sell it to the big drug companies for hundreds of millions of simoleons.
