This is a featured upload! It showcases the best talent and creativity available on MTS and in the community.
This mod fixes Sims' shadows shown as black rectangles. Originally, correctly rendered Sims' shadows have a blue tint. This mod makes the shadows achromatic. You may use this mod even if your game has no problems with rendering shadows.

Update (2 Jan 2016): Added the reallyNotMisty version. See the known bugs section.
The mod also works with The Sims: Life Stories, The Sims: Castaway Stories and The Sims: Pet Stories.

There are three versions which differ in the opaque (see the screenshot below) – choose only one.

Restoring shadows
You probably have turned (Sims') shadows off when a problem with black rectangles occurred. To make this mod useful you have to turn them back on. Here's how to do it:
In the game, set the Lighting setting in Graphics/Performance Options to high.
If you still cannot see Sims' shadows, in Graphics Rules.sgr (in [Latest EP/SP folder or basegame folder if you don't have any EPs or SPs]\TSData\Res\Config) find option Shadows. This is what you'd see:
Code:
option Shadows
   setting $Low
      boolProp simShadows false
      boolProp objectShadows false
      boolProp guob false
      boolProp heightMapShadows false

   setting $Medium
      boolProp simShadows false
      boolProp objectShadows false
      boolProp guob true
      boolProp heightMapShadows true

   setting $High
boolProp simShadows false ← if it's false, change to true
      boolProp objectShadows true
      boolProp guob true
      boolProp heightMapShadows true
end
You have to delete boolProp simShadows false and boolProp simShadows off from userStartup.cheat (in Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2 (or The Sims™ 2 Ultimate Collection)\Config) too, if this file exist and those lines are in it.

Known bugs
Sim shadows overlap and cut simetimes, but it isn't caused by the mod.

If you have downloaded simNopke-simShadowFix0.# and Sims' shadows in your game are misty, try out simNopke-simShadowFix0.#reallyNotMisty instead. That bug may occur on some Intel HD graphics cards.

Conflicts
None that I know of.

Where have you been for so long and why hasn't this been figured out sooner? Just like I had given up on the sky, I had given up on sim shadows. I'm so happy to have both back!

What did you actually end up having to do to fix this? I know the original "glitch" is caused by an unrecognised or under-powered GPU.

The original glitch is caused by new graphics drivers.
Not actually evil.

Yes, I had to roll back the driver on my graphics card waaaay back and can't update it or shadows break.
Thanks for the fix, but how did you fix this issue? Will I be able to upgrade my driver and still have correct shadows?

Since I got my new notebook 6 months ago I've been so sad that my Sim shadows had to be turned off. It just looked weird when all other items have shadows. I truly appreciate this fix!!!! xoxo

I got a new graphics card for Christmas and I couldn't roll the drivers back far enough to keep the Sim shadows working so this is perfect timing for me. Thanks again, much appreciated.

Thank you so much! Before I download this mod, how was the opaque of EA's original sim shadow? Was it 0.4, 0.3 or 0.2?

I was so excited to see this, but the shadows aren't displaying correctly for me - the shape is definitely there, but it looks like pale mist. I tried version 2 first, then removed it and tried version 4, with no luck.
I did set my in-game shadows to high, and changed that one line in my graphics rules to "true" so the shadows section read exactly like yours.

Now sims' shadows are rendered like neighborhood trees' shadows.
