The Romanov family was the ruling family of Russia for 300 years from until Nicholas' II abdication in 1917

Nicholas II Alexandrovich Romanov was the son of Emperor Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna (Born Princess Dagmar of Denmark) he was born 18 May [O.S. 6 May] 1868, he became Emperor on 1 November 1894 after his father's death. While he supported and advocated Social and political reforms as well as modernization , his insistence on traditional autocracy and an unpreparedness for his role in his youth lead to a troubled and controversial reign that eventually to unrest and revolution to resulting in his abdication and collapse of the Monarchy.

Alix Viktoria Helene Luise Beatrix was a German Princess born on (6 June [O.S. 25 May] 1872 to Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom. In November 1894 prior to her marriage to Nicholas she was received by the Russian Orthodox church and took the name Alexandra Feodorovna and upon their marriage became Empress of Russia. Alexandra was Intelligent and always willing to help others although often melancholy herself, suffered from extreme shyness and anxiety since childhood, unfortunately this caused her to be perceived by the Russians as arrogant and indifferent. She was devoutly religious, during WW1 she served as a nurse with her two oldest daughters. Sadly she was a carrier of the hemophilia gene a genetic disease that causes the blood not to clot properly in males turning the simplest of injuries painful and potentially deadly.

Olga Nikolaevna born 15 November [O.S. 3 November] 1895 was the oldest child of Nicholas and Alexandra, and Grand duchess of Russia. Olga was compassionate although she was prone to moodiness and had a rather quick temper and at times was impulsive, still she was always generous and willing to help others especially children. Furthermore she was intelligent and quick-witted, with an ear for music -she inherited from her mother. Of her siblings she enjoyed her studies, and reading politics or newspapers, or from her mother's collection

Tatiana Nikolaevna born 10 June [O.S. 29 May] 1897 was the second child of Nicholas and Alexandra, and Grand duchess of Russia. Despite her high status, Tatiana chose not to use her title going as far as to scold those that refereed to her that way. She was a natural leader, practical, nurturing, hard working and dedicated often taking on responsibilities of the household ". Tatiana had unique talent as a hair dresser, at times even doing her mother's as well as a keen interest in fashion. Like her mother she had a deeply religious and introspective side which is what made two so close, but she was also the most sociable of her siblings

Maria Nikolaevna born 26 June [O.S. 14 June] 1899 was the third child of Nicholas and Alexandra, and Grand duchess of Russia. Noted for beauty as well her good nature and innocent personality, though at times she was grumpy and bellowed at those who aggravated her. At times she was insecure of her place in the family as the middle child, who sometimes teased her for her heavier figure, her sisters going as far as to nickname her "fat little bow-wow" and often taking advantage of her kindness. She took after her paternal grandfather in appearance and strength; sometimes amused herself by demonstrating how she could lift her tutors off the ground and had a talent for drawing and sketching well with her left hand. It is believed that Maria was a carrier of hemophilia like her mother, in December 1914 during an operation to remove her tonsils, she hemorrhaged so badly The doctor performing the operation was so unnerved that he had to be ordered to continue by her mother.

Anastasia Nikolaevna born 18 June [O.S. 5 June] 1901 was the fourth child of Nicholas and Alexandra, and Grand duchess of Russia. Despite being a bright student she had little interest in earning, though she was talented as an actress and always ready with a witty and sometimes too sharp remark. Lively and energetic she liked to play pranks on her tutors or less concerned about her appearance than her sisters, would climb trees and refuse too come down, though at times she would cross the line to the point of being nasty; tripping servants and not above cheating kicking or scratching her playmates, one time placing a rock into a snowball and throwing at her sister Tatiana.

Alexei Nikolaevich born 12 August [O.S. 30 July] 1904 was the youngest child and only son of Nicholas and Alexandra and thus the Tsarevich; heir to the Russian throne. Unfortunately he suffered from hemophilia, inherited from his mother As a result he was restricted in phyiscal activity for his safety which he resented and acted out on though never really disciplined this made him difficult to manage, as he used his privilege of tsarevich to get away with mischief and order around others -even the adults. Eventually under the advice of his tutor his parents gave him more freedom which helped with his restlessness and overtime he grew into an affectionate boy sensitive to the plights of others.

Following the events of The February revolution brought on the failures of world war one and social and economic failure on the home front as well as a reign dogged by controversy in March 1917 Nicholas had no choice but to abdicate the throne not just for himself but Alexei as well. The royal family was placed under house arrest In Tsarskoe Selo in relative comfort . By August there was talk of exiling them to great Britain, as King George V was cousin to both Nicholas and Alexandra but they were denied and the family was moved to Tobolsk in stricter conditions. Finally in May 1918 the family was moved to Yekaterinburg and after midnight on July 17th 1918 the family was awakened and moved to a cellar where they along with their five attendants were tragically executed.
