I'm ready for this week to be over and have a few boring days.  Boring sounds good right about now.

Glad to hear it! I'm sure you would have done a great job but it's good to have professionals around who might not get so stressed trying to do this the first time.

Rude customers in general who think it's OK to crap on service workers and use us as their personal punching bags or who just view us as being beneath them because we can't afford two vacation homes and a Lamborghini. We've risked our health and the health of our families for the past year to help people maintain a modicum of normality in their lives. The least they could do is treat us with basic humanity and respect.

The internet in the building I live in cut off randomly at like 11:30, which wass during the 5 min break my class had. Anyways, I had to use my fairly limited mobile data to listen to the second half of the lesson. Problem is, signal seems to be really dodgy in this city especially when indoors, so like 4g comes and goes as does regular phone signal. Its really annoying. This pretty much meant that I couldn't attend several meetings that I really needed to attend because group projects are magical like that because I needed to save my data. The good news is that I finally have wifi again, but its 21:40 though I cant tlel how long its been back for because I tried to connect my phonle like 20 mins ago and that wasnt posisble.
Am hoping it doesnt disappear ever again because I have a lot of things to do and I legit cant do any of these things without a reliable internet connection.

Some people say they're 'paying for going out last night' because they have a hangover.

I'm thinking it this morning for a different reason, as I woke up with a red, scaly, itchy neck and red, swollen eyelids - because I dared to wear a necklace for 3 hours. It's not just metal either, it will do this with plastic or cord necklaces too!

My skin (especially my neck) has become progressively more oversensitive and fussy the older I have got, and will break out into an allergic reaction at the slightest thing, it drives me nuts!

I'm 'on the list' for an appointment with a specialist, but my GP has changed my antihistamine to one which is supposed to help with the itching (it doesn't), but now spring is here I've started sneezing all the time, despite barely leaving the house, so I think I'll have to go back to the old one just for my hayfever.

I don't want to bother the doctors at the moment as they must be busy with coronavirus, but the itching is driving me mad and making me really miserable, I'd rather be in pain.

Not just my day, but the past 3-4 months. I think I've confirmed Windows Update is the core of my random RAM and harddrive issues (and possibly a stupid driver I have no idea how to update because stupid Windows Update can't find the correct one, and the stupid Windows archive has 500 pages with almost identical names to go through, and even the current one I have probably has 5-6 almost identical versions. How the %&# do I find the correct one in that mess ? )

Anyway, I've spent almost every day the past few months trying to update to get past whatever issue Windows Update is having, but it gets to some percentage and just "nope, error code", possibly because of that one driver issue - which is for a function I no longer use because I had issues with it not always working properly, so I stopped using it over a year ago.

My laptop is slowed down by it all, to the point where I can barely use a browser when the lagging is at its worst. Never had these issues with Win7 (it updated whenever the heck it wanted, and to heck with any borked drivers or other issues - nothing stands in the way of updates! Windows 10 updates, manages to bork a driver in the process - which is probably what happened, because I don't think I touched that thing - then never wants to update ever again )

So now the update programs constantly use (at least) 3 GB RAM on my computer, run my harddrive at 50-100% whenever they're doing anything at all (looking for updates, trying to update, idling, etc.), probably using a few extra % of the processor too, and slowing everything to snail speed every so often, crashing Explorer or whatever I'm doing if I don't stop and wait for it to think for a while.

*Sigh*

Guess I have to figure out if that driver is the solution - never had to figure out other drivers than graphic ones before, so I'm curious if I'll have any luck with that (but first, a backup...)

Every cleaning article/video on the internet ever:
"You just need some things you probably have in your cupboard, baking soda, white vinegar, soda crystals, soap flakes...........other obscure old fashioned stuff.............."

Me (woman in my 40s):
"It's 2021, not 1921 - things I have in my cleaning cupboard include bleach, brand name bathroom spray, brand name kitchen spray, brand name floor cleaner, flushable toilet wipes, cistern blocks, flushable toilet bowl cleaner blocks, antibacterial wipes, brand name window cleaner, washing up liquid, brand name mould remover, washing pods (non-biological), brand name oven cleaner, brand name degreaser................literally nothing you apparently expect everyone to have."

I don't mind going on Ebay to buy stuff, but come on, at least be realistic - no-one has any of that stuff in their cupboards anymore.

^ I don't think we've had any vinegar (of any kind) in the house for several years, and we only have baking powder for -you guessed it- baking. Maybe there's some old baking soda somewhere, but in the small bags we get them I don't think it was ever intended for cleaning. Haven't ever used soda crystals and soap flakes (dunno if it's even possible to buy it). Are you sure those are 2021 cleaning hacks?

White vinegar and baking soda (plus lemon juice, I think?) are supposed to be good supplies for (some types of) cleaning. Microfiber (dry or with water depending on surface), too. No idea how well they work, though.

----

My brother messed with the internet/TV signal box, and suddenly one of the TV boxes didn't work. Turned out he'd switched around the plugs - but I still don't know how one TV worked fine but the other one completely lost signal. I swear, every time he touches that box, something goes wrong (last time I was in the middle of recording something and he just unplugged it without asking if it was okay - I mean, at least gimme a warning! )

"Soda crystals" is perhaps not the same as baking soda, I'd say. If they mean baking soda, they should say baking soda, or it just gets confusing . As for "soap shavings", soap bars aren't too common here (and in our house we haven't used them as long as I can remember), and they're even less common (I think?) to use it for cleaning your house. So shaving up a soap to use for cleaning may not be the first thing that springs to mind if there aren't any bars of soaps to shave? Hand soap and soap for cleaning the house may also be made with different uses in mind, so I guess it depends what kind of soap.

---

Baking powder contains baking soda, a dry acid, and one or two other ingredients. It mainly needs liquid to work. Baking soda can be used for baking but you need to add the acid (and liquid) to activate it, so if you bake with something acidic and find you're out of baking powder but have baking soda, you can use that instead (but half amount, so 1 tsp of baking powder = 1/2 tsp baking soda).

My gran often used baking soda when cooking. She even used to make some griddle cakes named after baking soda (what the powder is called here, anyway). Those cakes were delicioius!

The biggest collection of random cleaning stuff in our house is shampoo (probably my fault - I've been through a few until I found some I could use). Other than that there's detergent and softener, dishwasher soap, dish soap, hand soap, whatever else is in the shower cabinet, and maybe a couple other things. We don't use sprays (probably for the best - some of them have been shown to cause airway problems, so good thing we've steered clear of those). Mostly it's just water for daily cleaning of surfaces, perhaps a bit of dish soap if there's some stubborn spots or for extra clean surfaces.

Tried baking powder (didn't have soda) for cleaning out pots, but honestly, the only "hack" that really works for dirty kitchen items is to soak it in warm water and dish soap (or some of a dishwashing tablet or powder for really stubborn stuff) and letting it seep for a while. Tried the microwave trick with a lemon and water once, but it didn't even budge on the stubborn spots in that particular microwave (probably works if the spots are relatively new, though - guessing that's what they use for the hack videos...).

I prefer scent-free or mild scents, either lemon/orange or berries, and can tolerate some very mild flower scents, but not too over-powering. Had some issues with one of my water bottles stinking even if it had just been washed, so I thought I'd soak it in some dishwash soap and water, but didn't take into account we'd bought a different scent (a strong flower scent). The bottle ended up stinking even worse, and the water almost tasted of the soap. Had to run it through the dishwasher again just to get rid of the smell. We're not using that scent again (back to the regular lemon scent we go...)

Windows 10 and it's stupidity. Turning the computer off is apparently not enough any more, because instead of properly turning everything off, it goes into kind-of-hibernating-but-not-quite because of fast startup. Restarting is needed to get that thing fit for fight (or shift-shutdown when you want to properly shut everything down in place of a restart). I mean - why does everything have to be so annoying with this OS?

So that explains why everything worked fine after the restart when my antivirus updated, and why problems have been building up like crazy. Still doesn't explain the updating issues, though

Baking powder is not the same as baking soda or 'soda crystals' . I also think that people from britain use a different word for baking soda, to make it more confusing

Baking powder does contain baking soda, but also other ingredients. It is not really suited for cleaning. It is too weak for that.

Then those 'soda crystals' (sodium carbonate decahydrate) are chemically different from baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Former is strong stuff (ph 11) and should never be confused with baking soda. Never use this stuff for cooking instead of baking soda It is used as ingredient in washing machine powder. On its own it can also be used to clean your washing machine for example.

So use baking soda for mild cleaning and soda crystals for heavy cleaning (use gloves). So you could use soda crystals for your pots.

Yeah, it is very confusing - I hadn't even heard of soda crystals. Had to look it up, and there is something called that, but I don't think I've seen it (or not been aware of it, at least). Anyway, English as a second language sometimes complicates things...

I know the difference between baking soda/baking powder when it comes to baking, and there are a few cleaning hacks for baking soda (baking powder just makes a mess due to the other ingredients). Pretty sure soda crystals would be really bad for baking, though...

------------------------------

Anyway, over to today's annoyance.

A power extension cord in our living room took its final breath and zapped the internet power cord, so no net for an evening and half a day. Then we got a replacement cord for a day, all fine and good, then the internet provider decides to change the entire box. My laptop is fine, our phones are fine, but mom's old laptop - big, fat, NOPE! Works on cord, but Wifi? Absolutely not! Been trying to get it to work most of the day but no luck. So we call them, try, call, try, etc. Then I leave mom to her own devices for maybe an hour or so while the techs are supposedly going to fix the problem from their end (no idea what they're doing, but so far nothing has helped). Then we call back, I start up her computer, and...

(Big, fat, black/white/red warning after startup)
"WARNING! Have you done a backup/Do you want to delete all the files on the computer Y/N?"

MOOOOOOM??? WHAT THE *BLEEEEEP* HAVE YOU BEEN DOING???
Mom: "Me? Haven't done anything *acts annoyed*"
(I know enough about computers to not start a complete wipe while clicking around in settings, so it's definitely not me...)

I got it fixed (fortunately all we had to do was to click "no" but still... I have no idea what she'd done.
Wifi still not working, but I do hope we get it fixed after the weekend.

My WPM (words per minute) has dropped from 80+ wpm to just 71. I mean, I almost never use a laptop these days but still. Also I have to do my NVQ essay... I just typed out all the questions and there's so damn many... it took half an hour. I am mildly having a panic attack just thinking about all the work I have to get done for a qualification I don't need nor want.

What is it with wild life and my yard this year?

I was sitting at my desk watching a video minding my own business. About 10 minutes in I hear what sounded like a animal in distress. I look out the window and there is a red-tailed hawk in The Pit with something flailing around in it's talons. I head outside, the hawk drops what was supposed to be dinner and flies off. The adult rabbit ( I'm assuming it is the resident rabbit on our property) disappears as I make my way up the driveway to find what the hawk had; it was a baby bunny. By the time I heard the noise and got to the end of the driveway, the bunny was deceased.

WTF! Is this what people go through when they clean up their yard and want to have a peaceful space? It is a really fucked up consequence for doing the 'right thing'.

Seems no good deed goes unpunished. Sad to hear you lose a bunch of animals. I'm an equal opportunity animal admirer.

Starting up the computer. Sees the AV needs a restart. Okay, hits the restart button, but computer is slow and for whatever reason the restart is buggy and when the computer starts back up the restart prompt is still there. Oookay? Hits the restart prompt again. I guess 3rd time is the charm (3rd time turning it on), because this time it works.

Computer is off to a bad start today I guess - but I have had to do restarts more often recently, and I tend to forget the shift-turn off, so I guess it probably was needed. Everything was slow the first time around.

And only got worse from there. Stupid thing slowed down to a snail crawl at one point (the usual Windows update muck). I swear, these buggy Win10 updates are getting on my nerves. But for whatever reason the snailspeed issue suddenly cleared up when I was checking something in msconfig, even though I didn't actually do anything in there. I almost imagine the laptop muttering silently to itself "oh, she's considering restarting again, I better start working..." (that issue comes and goes, though - I think it's related to the failing updates realizing they're not going through and finally stopping the process. The "look for update, try to update, update hangs for half an age, update fails" process is what's slowing down everything)

Due to the drinks I drink from cans, I'm considering buying a can crusher.

Because I drink flavored seltzer from the can and maybe caffeine free sodas from time to time, I may consider buying a can crusher because the recycling can is small and yet the same size as the garbage can.

I may have to anyway. Aluminum is much better at being recycled numerous times without noticable degradation.

@Noa1500, I live in a community that recycles, but they don't pay you for it. A truck normally comes around on Thursdays every couple of weeks to take it to the recycling center.

If anything, it's more to maximize space in the recycling can as it gets sorted at the recycling center because the recycle bin holds the standard paper, metal, plastic and glass.
