This user has the following games installed:

Sims 2, University, Nightlife, Open for Business, Pets, Seasons, Bon Voyage, Free Time, Apartment Life
Default Resolution
My native resolution makes UI much too small so I am using the 1280x720 one. Is this a common solution and if not, which one are you using?

I just say stick to whatever resolution you're comfortable with! I have the same issue where I think 1920x1080 (the most common resolution) makes the UI small and hard to read. So, the resolution I use is 1440x900; it makes the UI large enough to see without obstructing the game view
When a game is predictable, it's boring.
That goes for any medium that isn't life.
That's why The Sims 2 is my favourite sims game.
It has elements of unpredictability and everything feels more involved.
The Sims 4 is another story altogether...
