Yeah, I don't really know what to do about that lol. I use that mod for a long time but it looks really weird here in NYC. Hmm I need to think about this

There are many good things about it. I may do more than planned! :D

I should be working on my 3 other CAW projects, but this is a fun distraction.

I want to look at it now and see if there is a good location for a more upscale area anywhere or not?

I'm using the south waterfront for that, since the map says it's in the process of gentrifying. It's a little difficult because of the industrial-looking terrain, but I'm doing okay!

I just looked and if I were to do a more upscale area would nuke the school and use a RH rug and add lots there. There is room for about 8 residences and a small park in the middle. I would probably redo the lots all around this square also. Super quick playing. I am not going to spend the time to do this right or build, but I think the spot might work. Better location than some places. I am such a PITA it bothers me though that the terrain paint is not square with the sidewalks/streets. I am too finicky about stuff like that. LOL

With any lot size mod in the area would hold more lots if wanted.

Thanks!

1.) You can send PMs of the content to one another- some of the content is too low-poly to be in the catalogue IMO- but I really appreciate you taking the effort!
2.) There will be a few refinements in terms of lot arrangement (some of the lots in the 'DUMBO' district will be broken up and others in the residential areas might be joined together for larger blocks. Other than that, it'll be largely the same.

Having a huge forest world with 10.000 identical trees in it isn't going to do nearly as much. I turned large parts of Bridgeport into a dense forest at one point and I didn't notice it running any more poorly than it already did. And there's surely got to be a few thousand trees there, at least.

It'll have to render all those trees but that's not the simulation's problem.

Not quite- having both a huge variety of objects and a huge number of them can impact performance- Simgurusarah stated this in her performance suggestions:
Quote:
1) We don’t have any way to group objects together other than trees [...]
2) The overall general rule is that the more world object types per chunk, the more you are asking from performance. There are no magic numbers, but again, a warning to try and keep the variety of world objects used within a chunk to a minimum.
[...]
4) Total object count in the entire world, both on and off lot, will affect performance.

http://www.twitlonger.com/show/g70enl

Furthermore, the majority of the deco going into Boroughsburg are not trees which can be grouped (there aren't that many trees in those areas IRL to start with) but hundreds of unique props specifically drawn from the New York streetscape- performance was always on mind in designing an urban world that pushed world-creation boundaries.

Unfortunately some of textures didn't tile properly beyond that angle- I would probably suggest dropping down sidewalk floor tiles. (that being said, New York sidewalks can be equally horrendous!)

But I think all his technique most definitely can be applied to a larger lot and still be quite playable. It doesn't have to be a super mega New York size world, but maybe a WA world size? But I think also the density of details is what makes this run better on a smaller world.

I think this world is good for a vacation world, but it is not really big enough for a homeworld were you would spend most of your time. It isn't a matter of how many lots, but how many places you can go to in the world.

The problem is that with urban worlds, the amount of detail needed exponentially goes up the larger the playable area becomes, as the immediate sidestreets will also need to be detailed to prevent a cut-off in the level of detail. There are few places where you can get away with long stretches of nothingness. I was working on a huge Rio de Janeiro world, and by the time I was nearly done furnishing the world, it was literally choking up my computer despite precautions taken- a huge, detail-rich world like that is unsustainable gameplay-wise.

Moreso, urban worlds in TS3 have always suffered from a lack of concentrating activity as there simply aren't enough sims to make the streets bustling enough (think Bridgeport with its empty streets)- it's something I think a fully filled, more compact world would suffer less of.

As for the size of the world, this will ultimately be a world where the majority of the action occurs on the lots (like IRL)- popular compact worlds like Arkham, Hylewood, and those by My Sims Realty, and Rflong7 have proven enduring gameplay-wise, and also very stable in the long run.

There simply needs to be an expectational paradigm shift between a sprawling Sunset Valley sort of world, and one based more around a generational urban neighborhood- the lifestyles and gameplay in both are different- and NRaas Traveller can always help if you're feeling claustrophobic.

jje1000 is this your world? I know many folks have many user names. Or you have just been following it very closely? Thank you for all the information you have to share about it for folks like me that have not been watching its development.

I have been to NYC just a few times. Once was in a garbage strike, so you could barely even see the sidewalks. (!)

Lol yes, this the tumblr blog (with some more downloads and worlds):
http://potato-ballad-sims.tumblr.com

New York is one of those worlds that can never be expected to be completely clean due to its age and sheer population- but the sort of place where the built-up bricolage makes things interesting.

Aha!!!! I wondered! It really is quite amazing. Very well done.

I have downloaded other worlds of yours in the past. You are a very talented world builder.

I need to head over to Point Reyes. Have not been there in years. Should see if the old school house from The Birds is still in Bodega Bay also. Time for a road trip! :D

Loved the cruiseship world.....haven't tried it for myself yet but I should. I even looked into doing a train world - dumb idea but it could work. If not, probably because the lots could be 4 meters wide at most, airliner world! It's set inside a 747! I mean it'd take a fair bit of meshing either way, there'd need to be faux wall pieces.

Just downloaded Boroughsburg and it's a really cool world. I've already started building in place of some shells, and I love how the city looks overall. If only EA gave us a few more grungy, dirty-looking, walls and floors. If I decide to get super committed to it, I'll post pictures of the lots I've changed..

Also, the Ms Plumbob Dream is an amazing world too, though also empty. For some reason it gets laggy when I try to make lots (with all the works-- hotel rooms, casinos, restaurants, souvenir shops) Probably because my pc can't handle the fact that the building itself takes up most of the lot, and there's a ton of space to fill, meaning many many objects on a single lot (I use too many objects when building, if I'm being honest). I still visit it though in between any of my sims adventures (Thank you nraas traveler!) It's just too sensational of a world to pass up imo.

Just set my seasons at 3 days so could see them pretty fast and did a lot of fast forwarding. The city looks very nice in the fall and winter. It played a tad slow when snowing. And my sim could not get in and out of the library on her own. She had to be guided in and out.

Put an ice skating rink in the park and winter concessions. She skated alone there. As I have not added other residences Sims can occupy there are very few Sims in the city. But that is to be expected.

The world really does capture the feel of a big noisy city.

Been replacing some shells with buildings that I've tried to make look as close as possible to the originals, without anything other than a CC 2x1 version of EA's 'stray window'. Here are four of them, before and after.

I tried mimicking the color schemes to the best of my abilities.

Obviously they don't look as good (or as dirty) as the shells, but they are playable, so that was my goal..

Ah thanks! I can definitely upload them. Should I furnish them first though..? Because, they're mostly empty.. (But then again, I don't know if I could pull off the run-down-apartment-interior style.)

Love what you did with #1 and #3....the other two are done well, but the windows available in the game never seem quite right for a tenement building.

If it's gonna stop you from making more buildings, don't furnish them. If you've got time to do both jobs, then absolutely you should furnish them.

I love the world, but since i'm not a builder it's way to intimidating for my taste. But it's so authentic, and well made, plus it runs extremely well for all the CC that's included. Ms Poodle is doing some outstanding things with this world, plus she uploads her builds for others to fill it in. This is a builder's world. So you better be ready to add your own creativity to the mix if you want a functioning world.

I just tossed the skating rink and some concessions on the big park subway lot, but those were minor changes.

I think doing a section as Chinatown would be very fun. Maybe that smaller area on the other side of the elevated tracks?
