Is there a way to own a horse but not have it 'live' on your home lot? I'm doubting there is, it's just a shame because that means the sims with smaller houses don't get horses

Funny you should mention this because I was just thinking it. A family I had in Appaloosa Plains at one time lived on a small lot. They had of horse and, of course, the pathing problems were endless. I wanted to have a small house but the horse was making it difficult. I really wanted to the option to be able to 'board' your horse at the stables. That would be great for those of us that wanted small houses.

Sadly, It's not an option that I ever saw.
